Chapter 114: A New Calculus of War

"That's… that's my hut! And Fang!" Hagrid's voice was a strangled whisper, his eyes wide as dinner plates. The glowing orange portal hung in the air of Dumbledore's office, a impossible window framing the cozy, familiar chaos of his own home. Fang, on the other side, had stopped growling and was now wagging his tail furiously, his head cocked in canine confusion.

"Go on, boy!" Hagrid urged, still in disbelief.

Fang, ever obedient to his master's voice, took a hesitant step, then another, and bounded straight through the shimmering gateway. He emerged into the Headmaster's office with a joyful bark, skidding on the polished floor and nearly knocking over a delicate silver instrument.

"Oh, do mind the orrery, Hagrid," Dumbledore said, but his tone was absent, his entire being focused on the portal. His eyes, usually twinkling with gentle wisdom, now burned with the fierce, unquenchable light of scholarly avarice. "So this is it. The portal Alastor described. It doesn't just bridge distance… it redefines it. The spatial coordinates are bypassed entirely. The energy matrix is… oh, it's beautiful."

He was muttering to himself, stepping closer, peering into the rippling light as if reading a fascinating new text. He reached a hand out, not to touch the portal, but to feel the air around it, the strange, static charge it gave off. "No incantation. A somatic component and focused intent. The will made manifest upon reality… Fascinating. Utterly fascinating."

He couldn't help himself. With a childlike grin, he stepped through the portal, appearing instantly in Hagrid's hut. "Remarkable! No sensation of travel! It's like stepping through a doorway!" He stepped back. Then through again. Back. For a moment, the greatest wizard of the age was playing hopscotch across dimensions, his face alight with pure, unadulterated joy.

Hagrid watched, his initial shock melting into a kind of wounded awe. "I… I could've come home in a second," he mumbled, his voice thick. "All those months… the cold, the climbing, the… the blisters." He looked genuinely mournful.

Dumbledore, finally composing himself with a slight cough, returned fully to his office. The portal snapped shut at Elian's gesture, leaving the room feeling strangely ordinary again.

"Your point is conclusively made, Elian," Dumbledore said, his voice reverent. "With such an ability, the journey is trivial. You merely require the destination." He fixed Elian with his piercing gaze. "Hagrid told you they value displays of powerful magic. The Ever-Fire was my offering. What will yours be?"

The question hung in the air. It was a test, veiled as curiosity.

Elian's answer was simple and chilling. "I'm not bringing a gift, Headmaster."

Hagrid spluttered. "But… but you have to! It's courtesy! It's the only way to get them to listen without trying to smash you first!"

"I don't want them to listen," Elian said, his tone flat. "I want them to obey."

The silence this time was heavier. Dumbledore's eyes narrowed slightly, not in disapproval, but in deep calculation. He was seeing the strategy unfold: not diplomacy, but dominance. Not an alliance, but submission. It was a path he himself would never choose, but he could not deny its brutal logic when applied by one who seemed capable of enforcing it.

"When will you go?" Dumbledore asked, bypassing the moral debate entirely.

"When Professor Hagrid is recovered. Two days should suffice," Elian replied, his politeness a stark contrast to the grim purpose of his mission.

Hagrid grimaced but nodded. For Dumbledore, he would go.

After Elian left, the atmosphere in the office shifted. The wonder was replaced by grim practicality.

"You trust him with this, Albus?" Hagrid asked, his voice low. "It feels… wrong. Like we're unleashing something we can't control."

Dumbledore sighed, the weight of his years settling on his shoulders again. "I trust that his goals, for now, align with ours. The dementors are slipping from the Ministry's grasp. If the giants fall to Tom as well…" He left the catastrophic thought unfinished. "We must use every tool at our disposal, Hagrid. Even unfamiliar, sharp ones."

He walked to the window, looking out over the darkening grounds. "While you recover, I have another task. Visit the centaur colony in the Forbidden Forest. Inform them of the growing darkness. Tell them Hogwarts may need to call upon our old treaties, to stand together against a common enemy."

"You think it will come to that? A siege?" Hagrid asked, horrified.

"I think we must be prepared for every possibility," Dumbledore said softly. "And I may not always be here to lead the defence."

Hagrid looked as if he'd been struck. "Albus…"

Dumbledore waved a weary hand. "I am old, my friend. And Tom is learning, adapting. We must lay the groundwork for those who will come after." He turned, a ghost of his earlier smile returning. "This Elian… he is a new variable. A new kind of power. He may be the pressure that changes the entire equation."

He changed the subject abruptly, a shadow crossing his face. "How is Aragog?"

Hagrid's expression fell into one of deep sorrow. "Not well, Headmaster. Failing. His time is near."

Dumbledore nodded grimly. Another piece on the board nearing its end. When the old Acromantula king died, his vast, hungry colony would be leaderless, a volatile swarm that could be swayed by promises of easy prey. Would they turn to the forest's other inhabitants? Or to the whispers of Death Eaters offering the world beyond the trees?

Everything was in flux. The old order was crumbling, and into the chaos stepped a boy with a ring that could bend space and the cold ambition to make giants kneel. Dumbledore felt a familiar chill, the chill of prophecy and pivot points. The war was entering a new, utterly unpredictable phase.
