Chapter 7 - Bloc shifts and rising tensions

Dawn broke over Project Athena like a sharp edge. The morning air was crisp, carrying the distant hum of the city below. Inside the dormitory, the remaining 287 players stirred quietly. Ten had been eliminated after the previous day's Silence Test and Bloc Challenge, leaving the group smaller but infinitely more intense.

The main hall glowed under the soft morning light, the giant screens ready to display the results of the last matches and the new block assignments. Ethan Kovač stood at the front, his posture immovable, eyes scanning the room.

— Yesterday, he began, — taught you more than any lecture could. Some of you rose to the occasion. Some faltered. Today, we reorganize.

New Bloc Formation

The screens flashed, dividing the 287 remaining candidates into new blocs based on the latest performance metrics:

Class S — The Mantle: Top 10 players, flawless in anticipation, strategy, and silent leadership.

Class A — Strong Players: Ranks 11–65, solid performers capable of commanding sections of the field.

Class B — Solid: Ranks 66–160, consistent but prone to minor mistakes under pressure.

Class C — Grey Zone: Ranks 161–240, hesitating too often, vulnerable but showing potential.

Class D — Edge: Ranks 241–287, survival on the line; one misstep could be elimination.

Aïna scanned the new rankings. Her rank had risen to 63, securing her a firm position in Class A, solidifying her role as a right-back who could organize silently. Sora had climbed to rank 45, Mila had slipped to rank 72, just below the top A tier.

Not Mantle yet… but survival is progress, Aïna thought.

Kovač continued:

— Each bloc will form balanced teams of eleven plus one substitute, covering all positions. Your past rankings inform your roles, but your performance on the pitch determines your survival.

Strategic Adjustments

Aïna crouched near her team, mentally mapping the field. The new configuration required careful attention:

Goalkeeper: An S-level player, instinctive and commanding.

Defenders: A mix of A- and B-level players; one C-level edge player requiring constant guidance.

Midfielders: Two S-level strategists, A-level playmaker, and herself.

Forwards: One S-level striker, two A-level wingers, and a B-level forward.

Keep C and D players covered. Free the S-level players to influence the game. Communicate without words. Anticipate every pass and every movement.

Sora glanced at her, a silent nod passing between them.

We're synchronized, Aïna thought. No words needed. Survival first.

Third Match — Rising Intensity

The whistle blew, and the chaos of the field returned, louder and sharper than before. The teams were now carefully mixed with members from all classes, forcing every player to adapt to different skill levels.

The first five minutes tested the cohesion of Aïna's team.

Nyasha, S-class Mantle leader, dominated the midfield silently, forcing every other team to react.

Aïna had to adjust constantly, covering mistakes and guiding hesitant players without a word.

Step forward… cut the angle… anticipate the cross… protect the weak link.

A D-level midfielder panicked, leaving a wide gap. Aïna intercepted and nudged the ball toward a B-level midfielder, indicating the direction silently. The team adapted, forming a fluid defensive triangle.

Silent Leadership and Communication

The Silence Test lessons resonated. Aïna realized:

I am not just defending. I am orchestrating. My voice is my movement. My leadership is my positioning.

Her heart raced, every decision critical. C- and D-level players hesitated constantly. Each mistake could lead to disaster, each correct anticipation could save them.

A hesitation by a Grey Zone midfielder nearly cost a goal.

An Edge forward attempted an unnecessary solo run.

Focus. Read the play. Anticipate.

Aïna intercepted a through ball and redirected it to Sora, who advanced with precision. A quick one-two with the A-level winger advanced the ball upfield.

We survive. We adapt. We live.

Critical Match Moments

The game intensified:

Nyasha scored twice with flawless precision, maintaining dominance.

Aïna's team faced repeated attacks on the right flank. A dangerous S-level striker from another team pushed aggressively.

Step up. Cut the angle. Don't falter.

Aïna blocked a shot and passed the ball to Sora, creating a triangle with a B-level midfielder. The movement allowed them to reset their formation and stabilize the game.

Every movement, every decision, was life or elimination.

Endgame — Rankings and Eliminations

The final whistle blew. Teams gathered, exhausted, sweat mixing with dirt and adrenaline.

Immediate eliminations: 10 players removed from Class D for failure to adapt.

Class shifts: Three C-level players promoted to B, one B-level dropped to C for repeated mistakes.

Performance recognition: A new Mantle candidate emerged — a midfielder from Class A demonstrating exceptional silent leadership.

Aïna remained in upper A, solid but not yet Mantle. Sora remained upper A, Mila dropped slightly to B-level.

Post-Match Dormitory Reflections

Back in the dormitory, the players unpacked silently. The cafeteria buzzed quietly with low murmurs about strategies and mistakes.

Aïna shared a quiet conversation with Sora:

— We survived again.

— And adapted. That's progress.

Mila added:

— It's more than skill. It's cohesion. Anticipation. Silent leadership.

Aïna leaned back, staring at the ceiling, exhausted but focused.

Tomorrow, the next challenge begins. Blocs will shift again. Rankings will change. Survival is everything.

The dorm screens blinked the final message:

Phase 1 — Day 6: Bloc Challenge Reorganization and New Match Preparations

Aïna closed her eyes. The Mantle existed. The Grey Zone was real. The Edge remained dangerous.

Survive. Lead. Adapt. And maybe, one day… wear the Mantle.
