Cherreads

Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Despair

Overcome with grief, tears soaked her cheeks.

The moment I arrived at the lab, a low-ranking member hurried me inse.

It appeared Sherry had been imprisoned for causing a disturbance. She was locked in a punishment cell at the far end of the building.

When I entered the room, the stench of damp, mold, and stagnant water filled the dismal space enclosed by iron bars.

There, long silver hair catching the lamplight signaled Gin's presence.

A few subordinates stood rigidly by the door. Gin narrowed his sharp, malevolent eyes and smiled with malice.

Sherry, her face pale as death, clung feebly to the iron bars.

"You've finally arrived, Wolf Dog."

"Sudden summons put me in a bind, Gin. I'm a terrible driver; it would be humiliating to crash on a public road."

"My apologies. We were in a rush as well."

Gin: the man capable of a sincere apology, provided he is speaking to me.

If this were a video game, I would have just entered his character route.

A Gin route... It seems the story is about to get much bloodier.

Next Step

Overcome with grief, tears soaked her cheeks.

The moment I arrived at the lab, a low-ranking member hurried me inside.

Sherry gripped the iron bars with trembling arms and screamed in anguish.

"Lies! Lies, lies, lies, Bourbon! I thought you... I believed that you..."

"What did you expect from a rabid dog? You really are a fool, Sherry!"

"Bourbon! Bourbon!!"

I refused to meet her gaze as she called out in that pleading voice. If I had, pity and guilt would have been written all over my face.

"I filmed a video to send to the FBI. Care to watch?"

"Prepared as always. Look, Sherry. These are your precious sister's final moments. Watch closely."

I inserted the USB drive into the laptop I had brought. The video played, displaying the grainy footage of a desolate warehouse.

Sherry's eyes went wide. The camera work was shaky and blurred—the mark of an amateur.

Yet, the bound figure of Akemi Miyano was clearly visible, thrashing violently. An iron claw grazed her shoulder, leaving a shallow cut.

"Sister..." Her voice was barely a whisper.

The flash of blond hair on screen belonged to me.

『Well then, goodbye. Miyano Akemi.』

My voice in the recording sounded cruel, delighted by the slaughter.

It was the tone of a starving beast preparing to feed—a terrifying sound, utterly indifferent to its victim.

One strike.

I plunged the claws into her stomach and ripped them out, tearing through her entrails.

Was that stifled scream Sherry's? Or Akemi's from within the video?

As if unsatisfied, I swung the claws again, delivering a swift, direct thrust. Akemi's bound body convulsed once, thrashed briefly... and then went limp in death.

Blood sprayed everywhere. A sickening, wet squelch echoed as the blood-soaked claws were withdrawn.

On screen, I wore an expression of pure ecstasy, laughing as I tore the heart from the woman's corpse.

I then crushed it in my grip.

The video ended there.

Her voice failed her. Eyes wide with shock, Shiho slowly collapsed onto the cell floor.

Gin laughed loudly. "Hahahaha!"

"Serves you right, woman! To be mauled by the Wolf Dog—isn't that a rather luxurious death?!"

Gin, previously in high spirits, grew irritated by Shiho's silence and bowed head. He kicked the iron bars violently.

A loud clang reverberated. "Say something, you piece of trash," Gin threatened.

Slowly, painfully, she lifted her face.

Tears streaming down her face, Shiho looked at me, pleading for a final explanation.

"Why... tell me, why...?"

Don't ask me that while Gin is here! If we were alone, I could have managed this somehow!

Hey, Owner! Can you hear me, Owner?!

Ah, the twenty-eight-year-old Furuya Rei has created an imaginary blanket inside my mind and pulled it over his head, pretending to sleep!

Wake up! Even if you are the core personality, I won't forgive you for running away like this!

Showing none of this internal turmoil, I smiled at Sherry.

"Why? What a strange question."

"Huh...?"

I tilted my head slightly, offering a smile of pure innocence.

"Does one need a reason to kill?"

In that moment, she finally seemed to understand.

The character known as the "Wolf Dog" was built on a single premise.

The exact opposite of the hero, Kudo Shinichi.

Simple evil. Evil that needs no reason to kill—that kills simply for the sake of killing.

And because of that simplicity... the Organization accepted Bourbon without question.

I continued to smile at her, a portrait of pure villainy.

She realized then that this evil could never be reasoned with.

She broke down, screaming and sobbing.

"Ah, ah... Aaaaaaaah!!!"

A piercing scream—a mix of grief, hatred, and despair—echoed off the laboratory walls before fading away.

Okay, it's over.

Dismissed! Break it up, I said break it up!

When I dragged Furuya-san out of his mental hiding spot, he was delirious. "Forgive me, Shiho-san... it's not like that... I... I didn't mean to..."

How do you expect to work in Public Security in this state?!

Sherry continued to weep bitterly until I left the room.

And surely, she continued long after she was left alone. Afternoon passed, and night fell.

Yet she wept on, her sorrow unceasing.
