Chapter 17 - Chapter 16 – The First Betrayal Revealed

The tavern, once a haven of muted firelight and fragile calm, now felt like a battlefield. Every shadow seemed sharper, every sound heavier, and Sonia could feel the tension twisting her chest with every heartbeat. Hector's amber gaze was unyielding, a constant, magnetic force, while Frédéric's presence at her side was a steadying hand against the storm that threatened to consume her. Yet it was Anna who shattered the fragile equilibrium entirely.

With a calculated smile, Anna stepped forward, her green eyes gleaming with triumph. "You are remarkable, Sonia," she said softly, almost mockingly. "But even the strongest flame can be extinguished—or redirected."

Sonia froze, her pulse quickening. She sensed the magnitude of what Anna was about to unveil, the trap laid with careful precision. "What… what are you talking about?" she asked, her voice betraying the tremor of fear that had begun to curl in her stomach.

Anna's lips curved into a smile sharper than any dagger. "Hector thinks he protects you," she said, eyes flicking to him with a hint of mockery. "Frédéric thinks he grounds you. But the truth… the truth is far more complicated. And far more dangerous."

Hector's body tensed, amber eyes narrowing. "Enough," he growled, low and dangerous. "Do not play these games in front of her. Whatever you reveal, I will not tolerate it harming her."

Anna's laughter was soft, measured, but it carried venom. "Oh, Hector," she whispered, voice curling like smoke around the edges of the room, "you cannot control this. Sonia, my dear… your past is a tapestry of secrets you thought buried. One thread pulled tonight, and the entire pattern unravels."

Sonia's breath caught. Her chest tightened, a knot of fear and anticipation. Every nerve screamed that Anna's revelation would shift everything—Hector's dominance, Frédéric's protection, and her own tenuous sense of control. "What are you saying?" she whispered, her body trembling despite her effort to remain composed.

Anna's eyes glinted with malice and satisfaction. "I have seen everything, Sonia. Every secret you thought safe, every weakness you tried to hide, every betrayal you avoided. And tonight… I will make certain the consequences arrive."

Hector's hand moved subtly, brushing along her shoulder, possessive and protective, a warning to Anna. "Step back," he warned, voice low, controlled but dangerous. "Do not force her to face what she is not ready to bear."

Sonia's pulse hammered in her chest. The tension between the three of them was suffocating, every moment charged with anticipation and fear. And then Anna spoke the words that shattered the fragile calm entirely.

"You were not entirely honest with either of them, were you, Sonia?" Anna's voice was soft, deadly. "There is a man… someone from your past. Someone Hector cannot challenge, someone Frédéric cannot protect you from. And he knows everything."

Sonia's body froze. The room seemed to tilt, the firelight flickering violently across the walls. A cold weight settled in her chest, a mixture of fear, shame, and dread. She had kept this secret buried, a part of herself she thought unreachable, untouchable. And now Anna had pulled the thread, forcing the first fracture in the delicate balance of desire, loyalty, and control.

Hector's amber eyes narrowed, the air around him thickening with danger. "Who is he?" he demanded, voice low and menacing, every inch of his presence radiating predatory control.

Sonia shook her head, voice barely a whisper. "I… I cannot…"

Frédéric's hand pressed firmly against her back, grounding her, his voice calm but edged with urgency. "Sonia, whatever this is, we face it together. You are not alone."

Anna's smirk widened, triumphant. "You see, Sonia? Every choice, every hesitation, every concealment only tightens the web. And now, the first betrayal is revealed. The game has changed."

Sonia's heart pounded in her chest. Every thought, every nerve, every pulse was a battlefield of fear, desire, and strategy. She realized that the night had shifted irrevocably—Hector's dominance, Frédéric's protection, and Anna's manipulations had collided into a moment of undeniable revelation. The first betrayal was exposed, and the consequences would ripple through every bond, every desire, and every claim in her life.

The storm had broken into a new, more perilous phase. Sonia Wittersham understood, with painful clarity, that nothing would ever be the same. Every choice she made from this point onward would carry weight, consequence, and the shadow of betrayal stretching long and deep across her heart.
