Chapter 65: The Dragon Pact
Rhaegar looked at the brilliant dragon egg, shimmering with a silver light, as if it were a shining star, magnificent and beautiful.
Even displayed as an art piece, the dragon eggs were stunning. Silver, gold, white, and green dragon eggs were all incredibly beautiful. However, dragon eggs were too precious; no one would be so crazy as to display them, as they would only attract envy and thieves.
"In the future, when I have the most dragon eggs in the world, I can establish an underground dragon egg hall!" Rhaegar thought.
Rhaegar summoned Cesar and whispered a few words into his ear.
Cesar left the cave as instructed and soon reappeared, holding two small bottles of blood, one from Thrimm and the other from the unfortunate dead chieftain.
"These Mountain Clansmen chieftains can barely be considered kings. I wonder if this blood will be useful." Rhaegar took the blood bottles and dripped the blood onto the dragon egg, but nothing happened.
Rhaegar also dripped his own blood onto the dragon egg, but there was still no reaction.
Neither the blood of kings nor his own Blood of Fire could awaken the dragon egg.
Is the dragon egg craving the blood of kings?
Rhaegar wondered, but kings were not rare. It was said that there were new pirate kings in the Narrow Sea and the Stepstones. Should he cut their throats and see if their blood worked?
Whether far away in Essos or Tyrosh, Rhaegar was determined to awaken the magic dragon.
And he might be the one with the purest Dragon King's blood in the world. Was it so difficult to activate the Blood of Fire?
Rhaegar was disappointed. Dragon eggs were indeed difficult to hatch during this period.
Just as Rhaegar felt a hint of regret, he suddenly saw his panel flicker.
"Achievement: Awaken the dragon pact, a pact of fire and fire. The Dragon King has the Blood of Fire; the magic dragon enjoys the creation of fire. A pact between man and dragon, with flame as the medium and blood as the proof. When your partner breaks free from its shell, you will share glory and loyalty, honor and dreams, passion and courage."
The magic dragon is fire, and the Targaryen Dragon King's blood also flows with fire, thus enabling them to control magic dragons.
Rhaegar was dumbfounded. He seemed to hear the subtle kindling beginning to stir within the Silver Dragon egg.
That was the fire of life; the magic dragon was merely dormant. This was a living dragon egg.
The magic dragon had not yet awakened, but Rhaegar and the little dragon in the egg had already signed the dragon pact. The affinity between the man and the dragon soared, and Rhaegar's Blood of Fire would also be elevated.
"Collection: Silver Dragon Egg. This dragon egg is extraordinary, originating from the ancient city-state of Valyria. Hatch it well, and the future is promising."
Rhaegar was extremely happy. The preciousness and rarity of the dragon egg began to soar once again.
The journey, the war, the sacrifice—the precious dragon egg obtained was worth it.
Rhaegar saw this information: the Silver Dragon egg was not a later Dragonseed born on Dragonstone or in the Dragonpit, but a dragon egg brought back from Old Valyria. However, for so long, no one had hatched it, and most people probably thought it was a dead dragon egg and just cast it aside.
These Old Valyria dragon eggs, brought from Valyria to Dragonstone, had a much lower hatching success rate than the dragon eggs of second- and third-generation hatchlings, but their dragon strength far surpassed these smaller dragon eggs.
Once Old Valyria dragon eggs hatched, those dragons would be bigger and fiercer. Meraxes and Vhagar were like this. As for Balerion, born in Old Valyria, it was a complete living fossil.
In past history, since coming to Westeros, the Targaryen dragons had been declining with each generation. This was true in terms of size and combat power.
If this Valyria Silver Dragon were to hatch, it would undoubtedly be enormous in size and powerful in strength, and it was not impossible for it to surpass Balerion the Black Dread.
Rhaegar stroked the dragon egg, his heart filled with joy. The Silver Dragon egg was incredibly precious, an Old Valyria dragon egg, of the same generation as Meraxes and Vhagar, and it was a living dragon egg.
A sudden thought flashed in Rhaegar's mind: could this dragon egg be the one Daemon gave to Mysaria, which his elder brother intercepted? Later, when Daemon held a high position, he gave the dragon egg to Nettles himself.
If that were true, it would explain why King Viserys I Targaryen was so furious back then; there was a reason. A precious Old Valyria dragon egg given to a Lysene prostitute was an insult to the Dragon King.
Although dragon bones were scarce, House Targaryen still had many.
Only dragon eggs, especially those whose spark of life had been ignited and had not turned into fossils, were truly priceless.
Rhaegar carefully wrapped the dragon egg and then led a few people to thoroughly search the cave, finding some unexpected gains.
Behind the cave, there were some gold and silver coins, jewelry, crystals, red coral, agate, and other expensive valuables scattered carelessly, as well as some embroidered clothes, but they had long since rotted away.
After Rhaegar calculated, the value was indeed not small. The wealth plundered by the Burned Men tribe over many years was largely given to the Fire Priestess.
But these gold, silver, and jewels were far from Nettles, casually discarded by her in the back of the cave. Legend has it that Nettles disliked such glittering treasures; she was always raggedly dressed and refused to adorn herself.
These high mountain wildlings were genuinely poor, but their faith was equally devout. When sacrificing to the Fire Priestess, they still offered all the wealth they had plundered.
"My true first pot of gold," Rhaegar felt much more joy in his heart. Dragon eggs, dragon bones, soldiers, and a considerable fortune.
Without money, it was impossible to manage an army or an intelligence network. A man cannot become rich without unexpected wealth, nor can a horse grow fat without night fodder.
"Buddy, you are the biggest gain; you can't disappoint me." Rhaegar patted the Silver Dragon egg, led everyone out of the cave. They would bury Nettles' body and take away Sheepstealer's dragon bones and treasures.
The Burned Men tribe's settlement was already engulfed in flames. The Vale knights and Eagle Guards, under the command of Lord Jon Arryn, had completely destroyed the tribe, taking away any valuables and food the Burned Men tribe wildlings hadn't, leaving nothing but ruin.
The Eagle Guards and Vale knights had formed two rows, stretching densely from the cave entrance to the Burned Men tribe's village.
The blue-and-white crescent falcon banners and the black banners with red dragons fluttered in the wind.
Their armor gleamed in the sun, and their morale was high.
The sharpness and brightness of their spears, swords, and armor flowed like clear springs. Rhaegar saw that the soldiers' smiles were as clean as razors.
Leading soldiers to any victory—that was the commander's sole mission.
Loving soldiers as one's own children, being strict or kind, violent or gentle—those were merely embellishments.
The soldiers watched Prince Rhaegar and his party emerge from the cave, looking triumphant, having achieved the desired results within.
"Rhaegar the Victor!"
"Rhaegar the spearbreaker!" The soldiers cheered in unison, their voices soaring to the sky.
Many years ago, Prince Baelor Breakspear was called the spearbreaker.
And today, the soldiers praised Rhaegar as the spearbreaker, a warrior just the same!
Lord Jon rode forward from the village, coming to Rhaegar's side. "Prince, I have a small gift for you from the Eyrie."
Lord Jon unbuckled his sword and presented it to Rhaegar. This sword was beautiful and sharp, with a falcon's head for a hilt and two wings forming the guard. Sapphires adorned the falcon's eyes. Although not as precious as a Valyrian steel sword, it was Lord Jon's beloved possession.
"Thank you, my lord. But I cannot claim this victory alone. Victory belongs to me, to you, to Ser Barristan, Master Cesar, Ser Brynden, to Ser Matt, Ser Joffrey, and to all our brothers." Rhaegar took the longsword, bowed to Lord Jon, then raised his hand, facing everyone alongside him.
Applause erupted again, like thunder. The soldiers also raised their weapons and began to cheer once more.
"Long live the Eyrie! Long live King's Landing!"
"Long live the Eyrie! Long live King's Landing!"
"Rhaegar the Victor! Jon the Victor!"
"Rhaegar the spearbreaker!"
Amidst the shouts of the crowd, Rhaegar felt himself somewhat intoxicated.
Among the various truths of the world, might is one of them.
There will always be those who seek to disrupt peace and stability; swords and spears are indispensable.
Rhaegar looked at the soldiers. "I will wield swords and spears with one hand, and pens and paper with the other."
Rhaegar opened his life tree template, and new changes began to appear:
Warrior ranks should be divided into low, medium, and high, and there should be other levels above that. High-tier represents a first-line warrior in Westeros.
