Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: Omens of Impending Disaster

Chapter 65: Omens of Impending Disaster

During Marcus's journey, he arrived at his destination on Memorial Drive: Memorial Hospital.

In room 201, Jessica Miller lay weakly on her hospital bed.

She was a kidney failure patient, and her only option was to lie in bed waiting for a kidney transplant. She had been heartbroken and resigned to death.

But now, a smile graced her pale face.

Just moments before, the doctor had told her that a perfect match had been found, and surgery could begin immediately.

Jessica was overjoyed; the doctors were preparing for the operation.

Watching the birds fly by outside the window, she thought,

"If my kidneys heal and I don't need to be hospitalized anymore, Brandon should come back to me!"

Jessica recalled the events of the past few days. Her boyfriend, Brandon, had met a girl named Christine Waters.

After Brandon visited her at the hospital that day, she clearly saw him leave hand-in-hand with a beautiful girl through the window.

And the next day, that girl returned to the hospital alone, appearing before her.

"You can call yourself Jessica. My name is Christine Waters. Don't see Brandon again."

"A girl like you isn't worthy of competing with me."

"Listen carefully, Brandon is fed up with you. He's wanted to break up with you for a long time, but you kept pestering him, so he had no choice but to continue seeing you."

"Brandon said girls like you should just die!"

Christine said sharply to Jessica.

Jessica couldn't believe that this beautiful girl with a beauty mark at the corner of her eye could say such cruel things.

"Shut up!"

Jessica trembled with anger at Christine's words.

But Christine didn't care about Jessica's attitude and showed no sign of stopping.

"You know, Brandon actually has two faces. The gentleness you see is fake. He always says bad things about you to me."

"But I like him even more because of this. We love each other!"

After Christine finished speaking, she gently brushed her black hair over her shoulder, turned around, and walked away haughtily.

So when Brandon visited her the next day, Jessica broke up with him, knowing she was a patient and had no right to compete.

After understanding her reasons, Brandon didn't give any answer, simply turning and leaving silently.

Jessica's condition suddenly worsened as a result; she had already given up on life, but the hospital director saved her.

Unbeknownst to her, after leaving, Brandon found Christine on the street.

"Christine, did you go to see Jessica?"

Brandon asked Christine suddenly as they walked side-by-side.

Christine nodded:

"Yes, we had a very pleasant conversation. Jessica told me many stories about herself, and said she's dating a doctor. When she mentioned doctors, Jessica's eyes were full of love!"

Christine reached out and took Brandon's arm, seemingly unconcerned.

Hearing this, Brandon pushed Christine's hand away and questioned,

"Why are you always lying? Your phone number and address keep changing! I know Jessica isn't that kind of person!"

But Christine seemed not to hear Brandon's question, staring at the jewelry store window next door.

"Brandon, those earrings are so pretty! Buy them for me!" Christine's voice was gentle and melodious.

Brandon, however, couldn't stand Christine anymore:

"I have no money! I've already asked my parents for money several times. I can't lie to them anymore. We're still students. Why should we buy things like this?"

Brandon roared in anguish. He had tried every possible way to get money to support Christine, but he was almost broke. Poverty had brought him to his senses.

"Fine then, I'll go find a rich older man!"

Seeing Brandon's distressed expression, Christine said something under her breath, waved her hand, and turned to leave.

"Oh, right!"

Christine, who had already turned away, suddenly paused, turned back, and said,

"Just to add before I go, my name isn't Christine, it's Tomie!"

After saying that, she turned and left completely.

Brandon stared blankly at Christine's departing figure.

Even her name was fake? Thinking back now, ever since he met Christine Waters, every time he saw her, a strange impulse welled up inside him.

He remembered the dismemberment case that happened at school two years ago; the victim's photo in the news report looked exactly like Christine, even the beauty mark was in the same place.

Maybe he should take this opportunity to get away from Christine!

Brandon looked up at the road he had come from, thinking: If I go to the hospital now and apologize to Jessica, she'll definitely forgive me!

"Ha!"

A sharp shout rang out, and Christine suddenly jumped out from the corner, startling Brandon as if in a prank.

"Brandon, I was just joking. I don't need any earrings, all I want is you!"

Christine said affectionately, clinging to Brandon's arm.

But at that moment, a thought suddenly surged in Brandon's mind: dismemberment!

And that's exactly what Brandon did. He took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed Christine repeatedly.

By the time the ambulance arrived, Christine was already dead, and Brandon was arrested on the spot.

When questioned about the motive, Brandon claimed he didn't know, he just wanted to kill her and dismember her, and the police stopped him from continuing the dismemberment.

Christine's body was taken to Memorial Hospital.

So, what Jessica Miller didn't know was that the kidney she was matched with was Tomie's.

Marcus arrived at Memorial Hospital after four hours.

He took out his ID, asked the receptionist, and learned where Jessica Miller was.

He went to room 201, where Jessica was lying in bed, sleeping with an IV drip, her face extremely pale.

Dr. Anderson, the attending physician, rushed to the ward upon hearing the news.

"So, Miss Miller had a kidney transplant two hours ago?"

Marcus asked the bespectacled, somewhat refined-looking doctor.

"Yes, Detective Moretti."

"Miss Miller is still recovering. You may have to wait until she wakes up to ask her any questions!"

Dr. Anderson was puzzled; Miss Miller had been bedridden for two months. What could be the issue?

"Dr. Anderson, immediately perform an X-ray on Miss Miller!"

Just as Marcus finished speaking, Jessica suddenly let out a painful groan and woke up.

"Dr. Anderson, my lower back and stomach hurt so much!"

Jessica said immediately upon seeing the doctor beside her.

"Miss Miller, did you eat anything last night?"

Dr. Anderson asked with some concern.

"Stop asking those questions, Anderson. As a detective, I'm ordering you to immediately X-ray Miller's surgical site. You'll know once you've examined it."
