Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Scoia'tael and Vizima

Even Francesca showed a slightly surprised expression when she heard Guilliman wanted to buy all three treasures.

She had originally thought that the man in front of her would only choose one or two of them to buy, not all of them.

After all, eight thousand five hundred Orens was a huge sum of money, and most Witchers wouldn't earn that much even if they took on contracts their entire lives.

This amount of money was even enough to buy one or two manors in any kingdom, hire a large group of servants, and live the life of a rich man.

However, it was precisely this open-minded and decisive attitude that made Francesca appreciate Guilliman even more.

She reached into her pouch, pulled out two envelopes with a faint scent, and pushed them towards Guilliman, saying softly:

"One of these is a personal letter from me. I would like to entrust you with delivering it to Iorveth, the leader of the Scoia'tael, who is hidden in the Vizima swamp area."

"And the other is a pass to enter Vizima, from Mr. Brian, a famous brewer in Vizima City."

"Regardless of whether you accept my commission, this pass is my gift to you."

"However, Mr. Brian will probably leave Vizima City in half a month, serving as your guarantor, so before then, I hope you don't cause any major trouble that would inconvenience this kind gentleman."

Guilliman raised an eyebrow in surprise, not expecting that she had already anticipated his needs and even thoughtfully prepared for them in advance.

This made him feel a sense of goodwill towards the beautiful Elven Queen in front of him, but also a hint of vigilance.

After all, when a woman is very good to you, unless she has fallen in love with you, she either has ulterior motives or desires your body.

However, he didn't stand on ceremony, reaching out to take the scented pass, and nodded slightly at Francesca, expressing his gratitude.

Then, he looked at the letter to be delivered to Iorveth, the leader of the Scoia'tael, and fell into thought.

Speaking of which, the Scoia'tael were actually a tragedy, a group of people who were exploited.

Before the Second Nilfgaard War broke out, the Nilfgaard Empire courted the Elves, promising them fiefdoms and equal status with humans, supporting them in establishing a nation in Dol Blathanna, in exchange for their cooperation against the Northern Kingdoms.

However, the Nilfgaard Empire had no intention of keeping its word; it merely wanted to trick the Elves into becoming cannon fodder, to deplete the strength of the North.

When the Second Nilfgaard War failed and the Elves suffered heavy losses, the Elven military officers were even used as wartime sacrifices, tools for venting anger, betrayed by their own people, sent to the North for trial, and ultimately beheaded in public.

These insidious fellows spread numerous rumors after the war, blaming all the atrocities of the war on the Elves, using racial conflict to incite hatred between humans and non-human races like Elves and Dwarves, leading to widespread slaughter among the common people.

Many Elves and Dwarves who had lived in human towns were unjustly persecuted; they had done nothing wrong, yet they had to endure the pain of family separation and ruin.

And once the seeds of hatred are sown, they will bear bitter fruit and spread to more people.

When those dispossessed Elves and Dwarves gathered together, living in seclusion in the wilderness, hating humans and seeking revenge against them, they became the Scoia'tael.

Even more tragically, due to the influence of hatred, Scoia'tael members, with nowhere to vent, would inflict the pain humans had imposed on them back onto more ordinary civilians, indiscriminately attacking human civilians.

And human civilians, in turn, would inflict this hatred even more on those easier-to-bully, innocent non-human races, creating more Scoia'tael.

This was a vicious cycle.

The flames of hatred burned brighter and brighter, more and more people fell into suffering, conflicts between different races intensified, the entire North was plunged into chaos, full of bandits, Scoia'tael, rioters, and a large number of monsters bred by blood and corpses.

The insidious Nilfgaardians achieved their goal, laughing at the self-slaughtering Northerners.

Thinking of this, Guilliman looked at Francesca with a renewed sense of emotion.

Speaking of which, the betrayal of the Elven officers, sacrificing them by sending them back to the North to be publicly beheaded, should also bear some responsibility from the Elven Queen in front of him.

Although it was said to be for the protection of more Elven civilians, such an act of sacrificing heroes who fought for their race was indeed frustrating and subject to criticism.

So, was this letter to the Scoia'tael leader a measure to salvage those non-human races still fighting and killing humans?

Guilliman pondered these matters in his heart, while Francesca on the opposite side also stated her commission.

"Mr. Guilliman."

"My commission might be a bit difficult, but the reward is very generous."

"If you can deliver this letter to Iorveth, you will receive three hundred Orens as remuneration."

"If you can help the Scoia'tael there, solve their difficulties, help them save more non-human races, and reduce conflicts with Vizima, you will receive a bounty of one thousand to two thousand Orens."

"If you can go a step further and help me persuade Iorveth to have him and his Scoia'tael members rejoin the Elves, I will give you a reward of three thousand Orens or more."

At this point, Francesca's beautiful face showed an expression of pity, and she said softly:

"The Scoia'tael live a very painful life; they suffer from hunger and cold, face great dangers, and endure the torment of revenge."

"If possible, I hope they can return."

"Although Dol Blathanna is still in ruins, it is still our Elven home."

... In the afternoon, Guilliman finally set off for Vizima City.

Leading the tall horse Valesa had given him as a gift, and after a deep farewell kiss with the beautiful Elf, he left Ammonite Village.

After a simple consideration, Guilliman ultimately agreed to Francesca's final commission.

Besides the extremely high reward, there was another reason: Francesca was the most powerful sorceress he knew.

Even if it was just to befriend this sorceress, and to seek her help in times of future difficulty, he should agree.

Unlike other Witchers, Guilliman didn't care about any principle of neutrality, nor did he care if he would get involved in politics or the conflicts between nations and races.

As a transmigrator, if he acted timidly, what future would he have?

Moreover, cultivating with powerful female souls was both a way for him to quickly become stronger and a major hobby in his life.

For someone like Francesca, hailed as the most beautiful woman in the world and the strongest sorceress in the world, if he could win her favor, he would be willing to even take a small loss.

If possible, becoming the Regent Guilliman – wouldn't that title be very interesting!
