Chapter 126: Legends and Legacies
"Without the Sage of Six Paths, there likely would be no ninja world as we know it," Ragnar continued, his voice a low, steady stream in the quiet night. "His followers traveled the world, using their newfound power not for conquest, but to impose a fragile order, to quell the worst of the chaos. For a time, the world knew a kind of peace."
He paused, knowing this was the sanitized, widely-believed version of history. For Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato, who had never heard such grand narratives, it was a captivating tale.
"The Sage of Six Paths… he must have been amazing," Konan whispered, her eyes shining with reverence.
"Yeah! To create order with your own hands, so everyone can live together… that's exactly what I want to do!" Yahiko's excitement was palpable, his own dream finding an ancient echo.
Nagato, however, was frowning. "Teacher… if the Sage brought peace, why is the world still like this? Why do people keep dying in wars?"
Ragnar's gaze settled on him. "Because the Sage, for all his power, was still human. Humans die. A century after his passing, his soul departed for the Pure Land. But the arts he created—ninjutsu—remained."
"Without his guiding will, those who came after saw not a tool for order, but a means to power. They grew intoxicated by it. They began to crave more—more power, more land, more resources. Greed resurrected old conflicts. The wars began anew. It is… a cycle."
"Why?" Nagato murmured, the concept both clear and heartbreakingly elusive.
"Because people's desires are endless," Konan said softly, her insight precise. "When they can't get what they want, they try to take it from others. That creates new problems."
Ragnar gave her an appreciative glance. She saw to the heart of it.
"I see…" Nagato said, the puzzle pieces clicking into a grim picture.
"But that just means we have to break the cycle!" Yahiko declared, undaunted. "I'll follow the Sage's example! I'll establish a new order, a real one! I'll make the world stop fighting! I'll fill it with kindness!"
"Perhaps," Ragnar said, neither encouraging nor discouraging. "But there is another legend about the Sage. Would you like to hear it?"
"Yes! Tell us, Teacher!" they chorused, leaning forward.
"They say the Sage of Six Paths was born different. He wielded a power not of this earth. The 'Eyes of God'—eyes that held the power of both creation and annihilation. With those eyes, one could become a deity. One could reshape the world." He let the words hang, then asked, "Do you believe in reincarnation?"
As he spoke, his eyes rested on Nagato. The boy flinched, sensing the weight behind the question.
"Eyes? Reincarnation?" Yahiko scratched his head, baffled.
"Nagato's eyes," Ragnar stated, his voice devoid of drama, "are the same as those of the Sage of Six Paths. They are the legendary Rinnegan."
"What?!" Yahiko and Konan gasped in unison, whipping their heads to stare at their friend.
Nagato froze. His entire body began to tremble. His eyes? The cursed things that brought only misfortune, that made people scream and run, that he could barely control? The same as the founder of the ninja world? It was impossible.
Konan and Yahiko's shocked stares felt like physical touches. Did that mean… their quiet, hurting friend was… a savior?
"N-no… that's not possible," Nagato stammered, shaking his head violently. If anyone was a savior, it was Yahiko with his boundless hope and charisma. Not him. Never him. He was just a ghost, a remnant.
"Nagato," Ragnar's voice cut through his denial, calm and certain. "From the moment I saw you, I knew you were different. Your eyes hold the power to dominate this world. Even if you refuse to believe it, think. Have you never wondered about the strange things that happen around you?"
"All they've ever brought is pain!" Nagato cried out, the dam breaking. "They make people hate me! They make me a monster!"
"And yet," Ragnar continued, relentless in his logic, "they led you here. To Yahiko. To Konan. You appeared beside Yahiko, who dreams of changing the world. Do you not see the connection? Fate, for whatever reason, has woven your threads together. It is guiding you toward a purpose that will shake the foundations of this world. Do you not wish to embrace it?"
"Yes, Nagato!" Yahiko's voice was fierce with conviction. He placed a hand on Nagato's trembling shoulder. "Let's do it together! Change the world! I don't care what anyone else thinks! You're my most important partner! My friend!"
The words struck Nagato's heart with the force of a physical blow. He looked into Yahiko's unwavering, earnest eyes. This friendship, this belief… it was more real than any curse, any fear.
With a friend like this… what was there to fear?
He took a shuddering breath, then another. The trembling stopped. He met Yahiko's gaze, then Konan's gentle, supportive smile. He looked back at Ragnar and gave a slow, firm nod.
"Good."
Konan watched the exchange, a warm gratitude blooming in her chest. Thank you, Teacher.
Over the next few days, Ragnar stayed, becoming a proper instructor. His own ninjutsu repertoire wasn't vast, but his combat instincts, his understanding of power application, and his brutal efficiency were on a level far beyond any standard teacher.
Nagato, with the Rinnegan, was a unique case. He innately possessed all chakra natures plus Yin and Yang Release. Learning new ninjutsu was trivial for him—he grasped the principles almost instantly. His Uzumaki vitality meant chakra reserves were never an issue. To expand his foundation, Ragnar ventured out to 'acquire' scrolls and texts from fallen shinobi or abandoned camps, building Nagato a library of techniques.
But the core lesson was control. In Ragnar's analysis, Nagato's tragic physical decline in the original timeline stemmed from a fundamental mismatch: a body too weak to channel the god-like power of eyes not originally his. It was like forcing a small engine to power a starship—it would burn out. Obito Uchiha later only dared transplant one Rinnegan for a reason.
Strength had to be holistic. So, alongside ninjutsu theory, Ragnar instituted a rigorous regimen of physical conditioning for Nagato. Taijutsu drills, endurance training, strength exercises—all designed to forge his frail body into a vessel capable of withstanding the strain of the Rinnegan.
Possessing the Uzumaki clan's legendary resilience, Nagato took to the physical training surprisingly well. His thin frame began to fill out, gaining definition and strength. He often sparred with Yahiko in simple taijutsu matches, the friendly competition driving them both.
Konan continued to hone her exquisite chakra control, her paper techniques growing more varied and intricate under Ragnar's pragmatic guidance—focusing on utility, concealment, and lethality.
Yahiko, the spark, worked on refining his foundational ninjutsu and taijutsu, his determination fueled by the grand dream he now shared with his two closest friends.
Time, in their secluded pocket of the Rain Country, seemed to flow differently. It was a period of intense growth, of bonds deepening, and of a shared purpose crystallizing under the watchful, impassive eye of a teacher who was preparing them not just to survive the coming storm, but to one day shape the world that emerged from it.
