Friday night, after a light practice for Alex and early close for Ethan, they sat on the couch with takeout pizza and beer.
"Need a break," Alex said sudden. "Both of us. No games this weekend. No clinic calls."
Ethan looked up, cheese string on his lip. "Where you thinking?"
Alex grinned. "Coast. Drive up Highway 1. Big Sur. Just us, ocean, quiet spots. Leave tomorrow morning?"
Ethan wiped his mouth, heart lifting. "Yes. God, yes."
They packed light...one bag each, swimsuits, hoodies for cool nights. Alex booked a small cabin online...wooden, private deck, view of cliffs and waves. No fancy hotel...just peace.
