He would come to bed. Obviously. That was what people did. That was the arrangement. She'd secured a companion, he'd agreed, there was one bed, and he would come to it like a reasonable person and they would sleep in it like reasonable people and she would get rewarded with the immortality reward just like that.


Then she heard him move—finally—and let out a quiet breath. Took him long enough.


There was a shift in the air. The specific, charged quality of magic being used nearby—not aggressive, not aimed at her, just present. She kept her eyes mostly closed and peeked through her lashes without moving her head.


The darkness in the corner of the room was gathering.
