Tessa's fingers dug into the dark-haired man's wrist, her nails leaving white marks on his skin. She yanked hard enough that he stumbled forward.


"He's mine!" Martina's scream tore through the courtyard as she grabbed her companion's other arm, pulling him back with equal force.


"Not anymore!" Tessa's voice cracked with desperation. "I'm stealing him!"


The man stood frozen between them, his face pale, arms stretched in opposite directions like some kind of twisted rope in a tug-of-war game neither woman intended to lose.


A crowd formed. Women pushed closer, some covering their mouths in horror, others leaning in with gleaming eyes that said they understood exactly what was happening here.
