Chapter 12 - chapter 12: the infinity

Rain began to fall the moment Kami and Mizuki left the laboratory.

The sky was dark, heavy clouds covering the city as if the world itself was mourning something lost. The sound of rain filled the silence inside the car, but it couldn't drown the noise inside Kami's mind.

He sat quietly, staring outside the window.

His reflection on the glass looked unfamiliar.

Who were my parents?

Why can't I remember their faces?

That was what hurt the most.

Kami didn't even remember how his mother smiled… or how his father looked at him. The people he remembered protecting him — who were they really? And the people chasing them… who were they?

Nothing felt real anymore.

Which memory is true… and which one is fake?

The only memory that still felt solid was Mizuki.

Because when he remembered her — she remembered him too.

That had to be real.

Kami's thoughts kept spinning as the car moved through the empty road.

If my parents were scientists… then what was that laboratory?

And if they weren't… then how did that coded letter exist?

Why was that compass hidden there?

Too many questions.

No answers.

Mizuki noticed his silence.

She spoke gently, without taking her eyes off the road.

"Kami… don't let your thoughts eat you alive. Whatever happened in the past, we'll uncover it together."

Kami finally looked at her.

"You're not scared?" he asked quietly.

Mizuki gave a faint smile.

"I am. But not enough to leave you alone."

Kami didn't reply, but her words reached him.

The road was completely deserted.

No security vehicles.

No bodyguards.

No other cars.

Just rain, darkness, and silence.

Suddenly—

Mizuki slammed the brakes.

A man was lying in the middle of the road.

Unmoving.

Kami leaned forward.

"Is he…?"

"I don't know," Mizuki said cautiously.

Before either of them could decide what to do, movement erupted from the shadows.

Men appeared from both sides of the road — holding stones, metal rods, and wooden sticks. Within seconds, the car was surrounded.

One of them banged on the window.

"Get out!"

"Give us your money and valuables!"

Mizuki pressed the horn repeatedly, but no one backed away.

Kami clenched his fists.

"They planned this…"

Mizuki didn't panic.

She simply sat back and spoke calmly.

"One…"

Kami turned toward her.

"What are you doing?"

"Two…"

The men outside laughed, tightening their circle.

"Three."

The moment she said it—

Every single man collapsed.

One by one, their bodies hit the ground, completely unconscious — as if their power had been shut off.

Kami's eyes widened.

"…What just happened?"

Mizuki started the engine.

"Nothing," she said calmly. "Sit properly."

The car sped forward, leaving the unconscious bodies behind.

As the car disappeared into the rain, something strange was revealed.

Standing on the roof of the moving car was a man in a long purple coat.

His posture was unnatural — his back bent forward slightly, not permanently, but as if standing straight was uncomfortable for him. He didn't lose balance. He didn't move.

He simply stood there… watching.

And then—

The car vanished into the darkness.

Back at Mizuki's underground laboratory, the lights turned on one by one.

The familiar hum of machines filled the room.

Mizuki explained everything to Dr. Atom — the empty road, the ambush, the unconscious attackers, and the strange feeling that something had been watching them.

Dr. Atom listened silently.

Then he asked,

"Did you find anything at that laboratory?"

Before Mizuki could answer—

"No," Kami said firmly.

Dr. Atom looked at him for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"Very well. I'll go there myself and see what I can find."

He turned serious.

"But now… listen carefully. What I'm about to tell you will decide what happens next."

Kami and Mizuki exchanged a glance.

Dr. Atom took a deep breath.

"There are things moving in the shadows now. Things far beyond what you've faced so far."

He paused.

"You can think of what comes next as a mission Dr. Atom's voice echoed softly inside the laboratory.

"You can think of what comes next as a mission," he said.

Kami and Mizuki stood silently, listening.

"I could ask many people for help," Dr. Atom continued,

"but trust is a rare thing. And to be honest… I don't trust anyone else."

He slowly walked across the lab, his mechanical face reflecting the dim lights.

"The alien attacks you witnessed recently…"

"They were not caused by aliens."

Kami frowned.

"Then who did it?"

Dr. Atom stopped.

"A human," he said.

"A human with the mind of a monster."

The room fell silent.

"That man could destroy Earth today if he wanted to," Dr. Atom went on,

"but Earth means nothing to him."

Mizuki asked,

"Then what does he want?"

Dr. Atom looked directly at Kami.

"He wants your powers. Both of yours."

Kami's fists tightened.

"Once he takes those powers," Dr. Atom said,

"he will gain access to something far greater."

He paused, choosing his words carefully.

"Infinity."

"You won't understand it fully," Dr. Atom admitted.

"But simply put, Infinity exists far beyond the multiverse… beyond the omega-verse… beyond every reality you can imagine."

"In that endless existence, there are five entities—five cores, five truths."

"If any being—human or alien—obtains them…"

He raised his mechanical hand slightly.

"Even your gods would be powerless before them."

Mizuki's breath grew shallow.

"That being could reshape existence," Dr. Atom said calmly.

"Or erase it completely."

Kami finally spoke.

"So what do we do?"

Dr. Atom turned toward both of them.

"I will send you to other worlds. Different realities."

"Places where those entities might exist."

"Your goal is simple," he said.

"Find them before he does."

"And if we disappear?" Mizuki asked.

Dr. Atom gave a faint smile.

"No one will know. I'll make sure of that."

"You are already seen as heroes," he added.

"If anyone asks, I'll say you're fighting monsters somewhere far away."

"With time," he said quietly,

"people will forget."

He paused.

"There is another option," Dr. Atom continued.

"But it's dangerous."

Kami and Mizuki looked at him.

"I could bring versions of you from other worlds into this one," he explained.

"I could implant your memories into them."

"But their personalities would remain their own," he warned.

"If they act cruel… or unstable… your image here will be destroyed."

Silence followed.

Mizuki broke it first.

"Tell us something more important," she said firmly.

"When do we leave?"

Dr. Atom raised an eyebrow.

"Whenever you're ready."

Mizuki nodded.

"Then one month."

Kami looked at her.

"In one month," she continued,

"I'll hand over my responsibilities to people I trust."

"We'll also train," she added.

"Because if we face something far stronger than us…"

She met Dr. Atom's eyes.

"We need to survive."

Dr. Atom smiled and nodded.

"Agreed."

Kami said nothing.

He turned and walked out of the lab.

From that day onward, training became their life.

Every morning.

Every night.

Combat.

Control.

Endurance.

Day after day, week after week—

One month passed.

The day finally arrived.

Inside the lab, Mizuki stood with her five bodyguards.

"Until I return," she told them,

"this place is in your hands. No mistakes."

They bowed silently.

Kami stood with his three closest friends.

He had told them everything.

Kiba looked at him seriously.

"We won't tell anyone," he said.

"You're not alone in this."

Kami nodded.

Dr. Atom approached Kami and handed him a small device—a remote.

"Press this only when your mission in that world is complete," he said.

"Traveling through realities is limited."

"When you press it," he added,

"I'll come for you."

Dr. Atom smiled faintly.

"There are things I can't explain… and things you won't understand yet."

"But this is the only way."

The portal activated.

Light flooded the lab.

Kami and Mizuki stood side by side.

"We're ready," Mizuki said.

They stepped forward.

Just before the portal closed—

Three dark shadows slipped inside.

The portal shut.

Dr. Atom watched it disappear, an awkward, unreadable smile on his face.

The guards vanished.

Kami's friends slowly stepped outside, uneasy but silent.

On the other side—

Kami and Mizuki emerged onto a mountaintop.

Cold wind brushed their faces.

Below them stretched a beautiful village—

small houses, green trees, colorful flowers.

Peaceful.

Too peaceful.

No people.

No voices.

Only silence.

Kami looked down slowly.

"…Where are we?"

Mizuki didn't answer.

Something about this world felt wrong.

And whatever followed them through the portal…

Was already here.
