Chapter 15 - Noria

After dinner, Pine says goodbye to Tadeus once he's paid the bill and offers him some money — It's enough that you're paying for dinner — the young man says.

— It's money your father gives me, I won't need it.

— I'm already getting money from Alexander — Tadeus says — Consider it as compensation for having to pick me up that day.

— Well, then take care — Gustaph says, patting him on the cheek a couple of times.

Tadeus watches him drive off and waits several minutes for a taxi to pass by. Then, he receives a call from Animal. — I'm going to send you a location. I want you to go right now — Alexander orders, not letting Tadeus fully answer. Unable to say anything else because of the abrupt way the call ends, he decides to go to the place. It turns out to be in front of an amusement park on the boulevard. — How about something fun? — Alexander says.

— Unexpected — Tadeus replies — I thought you wouldn't talk to me until the weekend.

— Do I have to wait until the weekend to require your services? — Alexander asks.

— I imagine the idea of spending a lot of time talking to her doesn't convince you — Tadeus says.

— Maybe the flow of different emotions will help our connection — Alexander replies — There are many attractions here that could work.

— It's strange that you want her to cry.

At first, Tadeus suggests not going on the extreme rides because he just had dinner, but eventually they go on most of them, until only the noria remains, the ride he had initially refused because it seemed boring.

They enter the ride and sit facing each other as it slowly begins to ascend. Tadeus considers holding onto the cabin, but upon seeing Alexander, he decides to put his hands on his knees to hide his fear.

— Why not just live in boredom? — Alexander asks, referring to their conversation a few days ago.

— Let's suppose that's the case — Tadeus says, looking away from the horizon. They are now far enough off the ground for his heart to start rushing. — Let's suppose you never have any obstacles in your life. Sooner or later, someone close to you will die, and all that boredom will be the happiness you once had.

— That wouldn't be my case; I don't have anyone now.

— Surely you had a father figure or someone you still admire to this instant. You are not exempt from feeling. It's difficult to think about something like that because the mere fact of living, for a human being, requires thought and some kind of attachment.

— I understand — Alexander says — I suppose pursuing something with this person is a clear example of my need for attachment — Tadeus nods. — What's with that look? — Alexander asks after a short silence.

— What look? I don't have a look — Tadeus says.

— Yes, you're judging me — Alexander remarks — You're judging me for wanting to go out with a stripper.

— I'm not judging you.

Alexander observes him closely — Are you trembling? — he asks and decides to approach him.

— Wait, don't move! — Tadeus pleads as soon as the cabin begins to wobble — Just stay seated, sit down!

Alexander grins and obeys — We're not going to fall.

— You don't have to tell me that — Tadeus says, taking a deep breath. Alexander leans forward to run his hands through the man's hair, uncovering his forehead to see his eyes more clearly. — What?

— You're sweating — the businessman says — Your eyes are shining like glass.

The sudden silence, adorned by Alexander's close smile, makes Tadeus' heart flutter. — I find it interesting that someone like you is pursuing a woman so far removed from your circle — Tadeus remarks, almost in a murmur, breaking eye contact.

— Not so far removed — Alexander says — But I understand what you mean. I just want to know if I can differentiate between my lust and my desire for something real.

After getting off the noria, they both head for the exit where they go their separate ways. Tadeus begins to entertain the idea of rehearsing dates with Alexander to justify the payment he receives.

The next day, Yenedith was driven to the company by her chauffeur as usual, and after her shift she decided to stop by the mall to buy a few things. — What are you doing? You're following me around like my shadow — she says.

 — It's my job, miss — Charles replies.

— It's better if you walk beside me — Yenedith says — It seems like you're stalking me; people are giving you strange looks.

— Okay — he says, quickening his pace to be by her side.

After browsing several stores and stopping for something to eat, Yenedith goes to the restroom, but upon exiting, she takes a different route, ending up on the opposite side of the food plaza. She decides to turn around, but can't find her bodyguard and feels like she's being followed. She feels a hand on her arm, pulling her, and lets out a terrified scream. — It's me, it's me, Miss Yenedith! — Charles says, trying to calm her, but she doesn't stop to desperately sob.

A couple of hours later, they meet in the mall parking lot. Despite the silence, Yenedith feels no discomfort, no awkwardness. —I thought I'd lost you — Charles says.

— I think I got lost when I left the bathroom. I didn't mean to alarm you — she says, almost in a whisper.

— Are you okay? You seemed...

— I'm fine — she replies. She stands up, and he follows her.

— I won't lose sight of you again. Don't worry.

Yenedith decides not to say anything and gets into the car. Every time she goes to work, she passes by several offices or warehouses trying to find any documents about falsified accounts or illegal businesses, but despite her efforts, she's never surprised to find anything at all. Maybe he doesn't use the clothing stores and instead uses the textile company.

Once arriving home, she notices Elena in the back garden and decides to join her. — How was your day? — she asks, trimming the weeds from the bushes. — Fine — Yenedith replies — I was thinking about making some promotional videos about the textile company. A recent survey showed that most consumers don't know much about it. They think the clothes are imported. If they knew we use our own fabrics, it would give them more confidence to shop in our stores.

— Do as you please, dear — Elena says — I'm sure you know what you're doing.

— Well, then I'll go to the factory this week — Yenedith replies. After a short silence, she adds — I thought you had a gardener.

— Yes, we do, but I prefer to take care of my favorite flowers myself — Elena replies.

Yenedith gazes at the lily bushes surrounding the entire garden for a few seconds. — We could take some flowers to your mothers — Elena suggests. — We could plant them so they'll never wilt.

— That would be lovely, thank you — Yenedith replies, somewhat surprised by the suggestion.

— Yes, let's take Mrs. Daisy — Elena says, standing up — She'll be so happy to remember her daughter — the woman adds. She caresses the young woman's arm and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear — How about I go change, and we go?

— Of course — Yenedith says with a forced smile, trying to hold back her tears.

When they pass by her grandmother's grave and arrive at the cemetery, Elena quickly recognizes the path to her tombstone. This makes Yenedith think that she must have been there before. Elena puts on gardening gloves and begins planting flowers around it until she finishes. — It looks beautiful — Yenedith comments with a smile. It certainly wasn't something she expected, that this woman would want to create a garden for her mother's grave. — Thank you so much — Daisy says, extending her hand to gently squeeze Elena's arm in gratitude.

— It's a beautiful gesture — Yenedith says, with tears in her eyes.

— She was a great friend of mine — Elena says. The young woman bursts into tears, and both women hug her until she begins to calm down, controlling her breathing. Once Daisy returns to the senior living facility, the two women decide to go home for dinner.

— You should go to the detective's office soon to conduct the interview and close the missing person report — Edwin says — I'll talk to Tadeus so you can go the same day.

— Okay — Yenedith replies.

— Perhaps you could drop the kidnapping charges against Edith — Elena comments — Now that we know it was all a misunderstanding, we should do everything we can to put things in peace.

— Of course, dear — Edwin says.

Yenedith looks at Elena for a few seconds, in a grateful gesture. Perhaps this woman wasn't what she had thought.

The rest of the week, Yenedith visited the textile factory. The head manager gave her a more in-depth tour of the different areas and their functions. When she arrived at the accounting office, she tried to find a way to be alone there under the pretext of taking some photographs, but the production manager stopped her.
