Chapter 21 - Chapter 21

The screen remained on.

The footage continued to play.

On the Screen

The Battle of New York has ended.

Loki—defeated by the Hulk and left doubting his own survival—was taken back to Asgard by Thor to face his punishment.

Public opinion of the Avengers was divided.

Some believed the battle caused catastrophic damage to the city and demanded the Avengers take responsibility.

Others felt the war was over, yet feared the Avengers themselves due to their unclear status and unknown power.

But far more people had been saved by the heroes—and many of them voluntarily went online to thank the Avengers for saving their lives.

Overall—

After this battle, the Avengers rose to fame.

On Earth.

And beyond Earth.

S.H.I.E.L.D.

Nick Fury watched the screen.

The mixed opinions of ordinary civilians barely affected his heartbeat.

After all, the Avengers were created to face extreme danger.

If someone couldn't even tolerate a little resistance or criticism—

Then they might as well politely escort invading aliens and say,"Sir, this way please."

That would be much simpler.

On the Screen

Iron Man was undoubtedly the MVP of the entire battle.

He was the first to sense Loki's true intentions before the war even began.

He seized the opportunity to confront Loki directly.

And in the final moments, he risked his own life—sending the nuclear missile straight into the Chitauri mothership.

He beat the drums of victory.

Worthy of the name Iron Man.

Worthy of being the hero who would one day snap his fingers and save half the universe.

Stark Tower

Tony looked at the praise on the screen and couldn't help boasting.

"See that, Pepper? Take a good look at what they're saying about me."

"I'm a genuine, undeniable superhero!"

"In a normal war, I'm the MVP!"

"I even save half the universe in the future!"

"I'm amazing, right?"

After saying that, Tony gave Pepper a playful wink.

Pepper was genuinely happy for him—

But also confused.

"What does 'snapping your fingers' mean?"

"And what does 'saving half the universe' even mean?"

Behind the Military Camp

Captain America watched Iron Man's evaluation on the screen.

He completely agreed.

People might think that because he was the field commander—and because everyone called him "Captain"—

That he deserved the most credit.

But if they truly measured contributions to the battle—

Iron Man, Tony Stark, was the real MVP.

No arguments.

If Tony hadn't realized what needed to be done—

If he hadn't chosen a path with no return—

If he hadn't flown alone into the enemy's nest carrying a nuclear missile—

Then no matter how many heroes were present,

Even if the number of Chitauri on Earth were reduced tenfold,

If the nuclear crisis hadn't been resolved,

Everyone would have died.

"But…"

"There's something wrong with that part about saving half the universe."

"Didn't they mean half of Earth?"

"Half the universe… that sounds exaggerated."

S.H.I.E.L.D.

Unlike Captain America and Tony—who reacted with disbelief or instinctive dismissal—

Nick Fury was far more sensitive to the phrase "saving half the universe."

Over the decades, he had witnessed the threat of the Kree.

He knew the universe was filled with countless alien civilizations.

That was one of the reasons he wanted to form the Avengers—

Not just to resist alien invasions—

But also to make Earth known across the cosmos.

So that when alien races considered invading Earth,

They would think twice.

After the Battle of New York, Fury firmly believed the Avengers had already made a name for themselves in the universe.

Logically speaking,

There shouldn't be many alien races eager to invade Earth anymore.

So—

What did saving half the universe mean?

Did it imply the existence of an unimaginably powerful alien race—

One capable of conquering half the universe?

And Tony Stark defeated it alone?

Impossible.

Forget whether Tony could eliminate such a race.

Let's talk about whether such a race could even conquer half the universe.

Even if they were led by a supreme ruler—

Even if they possessed technology similar to Loki's scepter—

Able to open portals and invade other planets directly—

Do people truly understand what that would entail?

How vast is the universe?

We don't even know how many planets contain intelligent life.

Even if they invaded one planet per second,

That would only be about thirty million planets per year.

Sounds like a lot, right?

But—

That's nothing.

Humanity has already identified over 125 billion galaxies.

Each galaxy contains anywhere from hundreds to thousands of planets.

Thirty million is insignificant on a cosmic scale.

Therefore—

Nick Fury deeply doubted the claim that"Tony snapped his fingers and saved half the universe."

But—

If half the universe really had been destroyed—

What kind of catastrophe would that be?

He could only hope—

That the video was wrong.
