Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

For the first time, the most important thing is to change the status quo.

When Nick Fury first saw the screen, he immediately realized its immense value: the ability to predict the future—a legendary skill!

In the video, it showed that Loki would lead the Chitauri army to attack Earth. Then, he would demand from S.H.I.E.L.D. additional funding for the department using the Tesseract to develop weapons of mass destruction.

It even suggested that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s entire core operations might be relocated there.

Though Fury had known the Kree for decades, from that moment on, he realized they had planned to use the Tesseract to create WMDs. But telling outsiders—especially the top officials of multiple governments—about such a plan would seem absurd. For example, if you reported to your superiors, you'd say:

"Leaders, did you know there are other highly advanced civilizations in the universe? I want to develop an enormous, extremely powerful, high-tech weapon. It will cost a lot, but its power will surpass nuclear and hydrogen bombs by countless times! Oh? You ask when aliens might attack Earth? I don't know. How much will it cost? I still don't know."

Nick Fury's explanations would not convince the top government officials. They'd suspect he just wanted funding to throw a bank party. So the plan was shelved. Now, seeing the future laid out before him gave him the confidence to convince senior leaders.

But what concerned him most was the Avengers Initiative roster.

According to the video, it was clear that in the future, the main force confronting Loki and the Chitauri would be the Avengers. Therefore, the composition of the team was crucial. Fury picked up the roster:

"Your brother, that handsome young man—is that Thor? Those muscles are impressive.""'A superhero, an immortal legend'—sounds like Captain America. I wonder how Agent Coulson's Arctic search went…"

"'A big guy who kills when angry'… ah, the green-skinned fellow who caused havoc in New York?""'And two elite assassins'—could it be Hawkeye and Black Widow? Hawkeye seems to have regained his mind afterward."

He wrote down each guessed name and began analyzing their abilities in combination with the personalities projected in the video, thinking how to maximize each member's potential. His mind grew darker with concentration.

Loki, listening to Tony describe the Avengers, sneered disdainfully, completely unimpressed.

He had seen their "stellar" performances on the ship. If he, the noble god of mischief, were afraid of this ragtag bunch, he wouldn't need to be there at all.

Iron Man: "You've angered them all."Loki: "Exactly as planned."Iron Man: "Terrible plan. They're coming… and they'll come for you."Loki: "I have an army."Iron Man: "We have the Hulk."

In the slums, Dr. Banner watched the video, hearing Tony's expectations of him. He was stunned.

"Is the Hulk really that strong? Can he single-handedly fight an entire army?"

Banner controlled his breathing. On the screen, Loki appeared, and some inner force of the Hulk seemed eager to emerge. It was almost as if the Hulk itself was waiting to be unleashed. Seeing Loki swing around on screen was oddly exhilarating.

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury circled Banner's name multiple times.

"The Hulk, huh? This character isn't simple at all."

At a military camp, Captain America heard Tony's words. Hulk could face an entire army alone. He found it almost unbelievable. One man against an army, even an extraterrestrial force? The power was astounding!

Sure, Dr. Erskine had injected him with the Super Soldier serum. And yes, he had transformed from the frail Steve Rogers—unfit for conscription—into a tall, strong captain, running faster than cars, leaping over high fences, rolling off moving vehicles unscathed, diving into rivers ignoring water pressure and resistance, smashing submarine glass—things ordinary humans could never do.

But he knew the truth: he was still fundamentally human. A single man couldn't fight an army alone. To his superiors, he was essentially a walking propaganda machine. He would travel to theaters, tell audiences:

"Every bond you buy gives soldiers one more bullet."

He repeated it so many times it almost made him sick—but it boosted war bond purchases across the states, multiplying the effect.

"The Hulk can fight an army alone?""I can't wait to see you someday."

In Asgard, Loki listened to Tony talk about the Hulk. He shivered all over, sensing that he would soon face the green giant. His future did not look promising. He shook his head, dismissing the thought, silently praying:

"Future me, please… don't embarrass yourself again!"

Loki: "The Hulk? I thought that monster got lost."Iron Man: "I don't think you understand the situation. You'll never claim the throne, you'll never succeed. Maybe your army will attack us, and we may not defeat them—but we will come for you."

Loki, enraged, stepped forward.

Loki: "If you betray your friends, they won't have the time to come for me."

He raised the scepter, the Mind Stone still capable of controlling Hawkeye, pointing it at Iron Man's chest.

Inside Stark Tower, Tony tensed.

"Is it finally happening? Will I be mind-controlled too?"

In Asgard, Loki was also nervous.

"Future me, you must stand firm this time. Don't mess up again, or I'll truly become a clown."

Click.

The scepter touched the small Arc Reactor on Tony's chest. Loki's confident expression froze.

He didn't believe in evil, so he tried again.

Click.

Still no response.

Inside Stark Tower, the air was thick with a palpable sense of awkwardness.

In Asgard, Loki watched helplessly, holding his forehead.

"It's over. I'm embarrassed again.""Future me, you really are an adorable little… idiot."
