[Umbral Dominion] — The Dual Authority of Kael Noctis
In the hierarchy of high-rank abilities, Umbral Dominion stands as a pinnacle of battlefield management. It is not a manifestation of darkness in the traditional sense, nor is it a trick of the light. It is the absolute authority over existing shadows—a system where Kael Noctis exerts his will and aura to reshape reality within a fixed radius.
The core principle is simple yet absolute: all shadows within Kael's reach are linked to his presence. They respond to his mental state, his stamina, and his focus. They are not independent entities; they are puppets given purpose by their master's intent.
Stage I: Shadow Dominion (Animation)
This mode is the active form of his power. Kael animates existing shadows, causing them to detach from the earth, stretch, and rise as semi-living constructs.
Utility: These shadows are used to bind enemy limbs, drag targets off-balance, or form fluid, moving shields, and they can attack too.
The Sensation: To the victim, these shadows feel cold and unnervingly heavy—like being entangled in thick, soaked fabric under immense pressure. They interfere, turning the simple act of movement into an exhausting struggle.
The Shadow Load: This is the ability's heavy price. Because each shadow is a neural extension of Kael, animating them burdens his own body. The more shadows he commands, the slower his own reflexes and movement become. At the limit of his Shadow Load, Kael becomes a stationary fortress, unable to move his own limbs while his shadows fight for him.
Stage II: Umbral Pressure (Suppression)
This is the passive but equally lethal form of his power. Instead of moving the shadows, Kael compresses his aura into them, creating a densified field of suppression.
Shadow Densification: The shadows become heavier. Every step an enemy takes feels like wading through deep mud. It doesn't stop motion—it drags it down.
Sensory Dulling: This mode strikes the perception. Enemies find their peripheral vision narrowing and their hearing muted. Most dangerously, it creates a lag between a target's thought and their physical action, ruining the timing of even the most skilled person.
II. Strategic Balance and Limitations
The Dominion is a game of Radius and Focus. A wide radius allows Kael to control the entire battlefield but thins the density of his power. A tight radius concentrates his aura, making the shadows near his person almost impossible to penetrate.
The Absolute Constraints:
Environmental Dependence: Kael cannot create shadows from nothing. In a space of pure, blinding light or total void without surfaces, the Dominion is nullified.
Non-Lethal Nature: The ability itself cannot deal direct, lethal damage. It is a system of control designed to create the perfect opening for Kael's physical blade.
The Divine Ceiling: Against god-class beings, the Dominion is downgraded to Disruption. While it can slow a divine entity, it cannot truly dominate them.
III. The Toll of the Master
Continuous activation of the Umbral Dominion drains Kael's stamina at an accelerated rate. Overuse leads to a predictable but dangerous cascade of symptoms: blurred vision, acute migraines, and muscle stiffness. If his focus breaks or he exceeds his limit, the ability collapses instantly. In the wake of such a collapse, Kael is left physically exhausted and combat-ineffective—a king left without his crown in the middle of a battlefield.
