Chapter 149 - Chapter 150: Karen’s “Brilliant” Idea, and Frank Makes a Bet

Inside a private hospital room with a calm, pleasant atmosphere—

Karen was lying comfortably against the clean, soft hospital bed. She watched TV while eating fruit the nurse had brought her, feeling relaxed and spoiled—and more than that, she was fully appreciating just how amazing money was.

Money.

The moment she arrived around noon, she was admitted and scheduled for surgery right away. No waiting in long lines like at public hospitals. No screaming patients. No chaos.

The baby was gone.

And because she had money, she got a private room like this—round-the-clock care from attentive nurses and a peaceful, comfortable recovery.

How perfect was that?

Even better, the several thousand dollars in medical bills didn't cost her a single cent. Dexter was paying for all of it.

And on top of that, once she was discharged tomorrow, she'd be getting a payout.

"So damn good," Karen muttered to herself, unable to help it.

Then a thought popped into her head.

A great idea.

She decided that when Dexter came by tomorrow, she'd talk to him—see if, after some time, he might want her to get pregnant again.

She honestly didn't mind being pregnant for a few more months if it meant making another huge chunk of money.

Thinking about it, Karen broke into a wide, satisfied smile.

After closing up for the night and having nothing else to do, Dexter did what he usually did—took Dull Nine with him and wandered over to the Alibi.

Business at the Alibi was noticeably better than before.

Kevin was running around nonstop, already sweating through his shirt. "Dexter, you're seriously a good-luck charm. I've decided—no matter what, I'm chaining you to this place. You're not allowed to leave."

Dexter smiled and casually sized up Kevin's bare upper body. "Just keep a body like that. You don't need me."

As soon as the words left his mouth, Dexter glanced around the bar.

Aside from regulars like Frank, there were clearly more women than usual tonight—and quite a few of them were either openly staring at Kevin or sneaking looks at him.

Kevin flashed a toothy grin and leaned in close, lowering his voice. "You're not wrong. It's actually working."

Dexter laughed. "What, someone trying to pick you up?"

Kevin nodded. "A few, actually."

"Then go for it," Dexter teased.

Kevin immediately shook his head. "Hell no. If Veronica finds out, I'll end up just like Frank."

"Then just don't let Veronica find out," Dexter said, deliberately stirring the pot.

"…" Kevin went quiet. He was clearly tempted—but after a second, he shook his head again. "No. I love Veronica. I'm not hurting her."

"Good," Dexter nodded. "Congratulations, correct answer. Guess I don't need to call Veronica and rat you out."

Kevin froze. "?????

What the hell?! You were setting me up?!"

"Of course," Dexter replied without a shred of guilt.

Kevin went completely blank, his expression dumbfounded.

Honestly, it was hilarious.

"I didn't think you were this devious," Kevin said after a moment, his tone complicated.

Dexter just smiled and said nothing.

Time passed.

About half an hour later, the bar finally slowed down.

Kevin caught his breath and remembered what Veronica had mentioned the night before—asking Fiona to come work at the Alibi once she got out of jail. He brought it up with Dexter.

After hearing him out, Dexter noticed the hesitation in Kevin's voice. "You don't really want to agree?"

Kevin was honest. "Yeah. If she works here, she'll probably miss shifts all the time. The Gallagher family is basically a walking disaster."

Dexter nodded. "Think about the conditions I set for Fiona before."

Kevin gave a bitter smile. "Yeah. I get it now."

Dexter thought for a moment. "You're the boss. It's your call. But if you do hire her, you need clear rules. Constantly skipping work isn't acceptable."

"That's what I'm worried about," Kevin said. "But… if she promises not to ditch shifts, would you mind her working here?"

Dexter laughed. "What are you even thinking? I don't care. We're not even friends. Why would I mind?"

"Good," Kevin said, relieved. He knew Dexter's relationship with Fiona was… complicated. Getting a clear answer put him at ease.

Just then—

A group of loud Black guys walked into the bar and sat down in the corner.

Once seated, one of them shouted arrogantly at Kevin to bring them drinks.

The moment Dexter heard his voice, it sounded familiar.

He turned around.

Oh yeah. Definitely familiar.

Wasn't this the same guy from the original show—the one bragging nonstop to his friends, only to get called out by Frank for lying?

Well, this just got interesting.

Dexter had been planning to head home and sleep, but he immediately changed his mind and stayed put to watch the show.

It didn't take long.

Just as expected, the guy started loudly bragging about his "heroic" deeds.

"That cop pulled out a Taser and shot me. I didn't even flinch—I walked straight at him!"

"He freaked out and fired again! I still didn't drop, just kept walking!"

"He backed up, scared as hell—"

Before he could finish—

Frank, sitting at the bar, smoking and drinking, suddenly turned his head and shouted, "Bullshit!!!"

The entire table froze.

The guy and his friends all turned to look at Frank.

The bragger was in a great mood before being interrupted, and now he was pissed. "What did you say? Say it again."

Frank didn't flinch. He stared straight at him and shouted back, "I said bullshit! I've been tased before. I pissed myself and dropped instantly! There's no way you got hit twice and kept walking toward a cop!"

The guy's dark face twisted with anger. "You calling me a liar?"

Frank grinned. "At the very least, you're full of shit."

The guy cared a lot about his reputation. Being called out like that in front of his friends was unacceptable.

"Let's bet," he snapped. "A thousand dollars."

Frank's eyes lit up instantly. Free money, as far as he could tell. After a quick thought, he raised the stakes. "Ten thousand."

"Deal," the guy agreed without hesitation.

Frank rubbed his hands together excitedly and shouted at Kevin, "Kevin! Bring out your Taser—I'm about to get rich!"

A few minutes later—

The guy got hit with the first shot.

He twitched… and stayed standing.

Frank's smile froze.

About half a minute later—

The second shot hit.

The guy was still standing.

Frank panicked. His eyes went wide.

The next second, everyone in the bar turned to look at Frank.

Ten thousand dollars.

That was a lot of money.

The guy moved.

He grabbed a beer from the nearby table, downed it in one gulp, then slowly walked over to Frank.

"Motherfucker," he growled. "Where's my ten grand? Pay up."

Frank: "..."
