It was a little past four in the afternoon.
A silver Mercedes-Benz pulled up to the curb outside the Gallagher house.
Steve pushed the door open, stepped out, lit a cigarette, and started walking toward the house.
Just then.
Dexter pulled up across the street in his Ferrari. Seeing Steve, he felt a little surprised.
After all, Steve didn't exactly strike him as the type of guy who would come around just to babysit Debbie and the others.
Hearing the car, Steve stopped, turned around, saw Dexter, and smiled.
Dexter smiled back, got out of the car, and crossed the street.
"Steve. Long time no see," Dexter greeted him first.
Steve didn't have a problem with Dexter. In fact, he actually appreciated the guy. "Yeah, been a few days. But I've been thinking about your food. I figured I'd bring Fiona over to your place for dinner tonight."
"????"
Dexter hadn't asked Veronica for many details about the Gallagher situation recently, so hearing this confused him. He thought for a second. "When was the last time you talked to Fiona?"
Now it was Steve's turn to be confused. "??? About a day? I called her a bunch of times, but she didn't pick up. Why?"
As the words left his mouth, a possibility struck Steve. "Did she hook up with you?"
Dexter: "..."
Dexter was stunned, but also found it hilarious.
Hilarious because Steve seemed fully aware that Fiona couldn't keep her legs closed, yet he was still willing to get mixed up with her.
Well, Dexter thought, Steve really is just a different breed of simp.
In the original show... they only had one fight, and that same night, Fiona almost fucked Mike.
Yeah, makes sense. Poor guy.
"No," Dexter laughed, shaking his head. "Fiona got arrested yesterday. She was shipped off to prison a few hours ago."
Steve was dumbfounded. "????? What happened? How did she end up in prison?"
"It's a long story, and I don't know all the details. Let's go inside. I'm here to check on Carl. Kevin's in there; he knows more than I do. Let him tell you," Dexter said, not wanting to explain it himself.
Steve didn't waste time and started moving.
Soon, they were at the door.
Steve knocked urgently.
Bang, bang, bang.
Kevin opened the door. Seeing Steve, he looked a bit surprised. "Oh, I almost forgot you existed."
"..." Steve was speechless. Ignoring the comment, he hurriedly asked, "What's going on? Fiona's in prison?"
Hearing this, Kevin sighed. "Ugh. Come in first."
In the living room.
Debbie and Carl, who had both skipped school today, were sitting side-by-side on the couch.
Debbie looked catatonic, staring into space.
Carl was watching TV like absolutely nothing had happened.
Not far from the couch, a capable-looking woman in her fifties was cleaning up.
That morning, Veronica had told Dexter that Kevin was hiring a nanny to take care of Carl and the kids.
Seeing the older woman, Dexter guessed who it was—Mrs. Gunderson. He gave her a second glance before looking away and sitting down next to Carl.
Carl finally noticed Dexter and immediately smiled. "Dexter."
Dexter nodded. "No school?"
"School's boring. I'll go tomorrow."
The two started chatting.
At the same time, Kevin explained the whole situation to Steve.
After listening to the story, Steve leaned against the wall with a complicated expression. He pulled out his pack, lit a cigarette, and took a deep drag. "I knew it would end up like this!"
"It was burglary, man!"
Kevin wasn't stupid; he caught on immediately. "Wait, you knew about this?"
"I was there that night. I just didn't go inside," Steve replied, exasperated.
Kevin was speechless. "Then why didn't you stop them?"
Steve looked at Kevin and gave a bitter laugh. "You know them better than I do. Could I have stopped them?"
"..." Kevin had no comeback for that. "Okay, fair point. When they want to do something, nobody can stop them."
"Ugh." Steve exhaled a cloud of smoke and checked the time. "It's too late to go to the prison now. I'll go tomorrow morning."
"Go ahead," Kevin said casually, having zero interest in getting involved in that mess. He turned to Dexter. "Dexter, what brings you here?"
"Just came to see how the nanny situation was going," Dexter replied.
Kevin grinned and pointed a finger at the woman cleaning. "Sorted. That's Mrs. Gunderson. She's got experience. With her here, Debbie and the kids will be fine for the next three months."
"Good to hear," Dexter nodded.
Steve caught the drift and chimed in. "Kevin, you hired a nanny? I'll cover the cost."
Fiona could be paroled in as little as three months... Steve was willing to wait that long.
Kevin was obviously happy to hear that. A nanny for three months wasn't cheap, and god knew when Fiona would be able to pay him back. "Well, I won't pretend to be polite then. I'm broke."
Steve smiled. "Don't mention it. How much?"
"Two grand a month. Six thousand total," Kevin replied bluntly.
That wasn't pocket change. Six grand could do a lot.
But Steve didn't hesitate. He pulled out his wallet, took out all the cash inside, and did a quick count. "I don't have that much on me. Here's eleven hundred. Take this for now, and I'll bring the rest tomorrow."
Kevin didn't fake modesty and took the cash immediately. "Deal."
"Thanks for helping out. I had some business out of town yesterday, otherwise..." Steve explained briefly, then walked over to Debbie to try and talk to her.
---
"Carl, I'm going on a business trip in a few days. You might not see me for a while. While I'm still here, come eat at the restaurant," Dexter said to Carl after they chatted for a bit.
Carl was surprised. "Huh? Where are you going?"
"New York," Dexter smiled.
"I've only seen New York on TV," Carl said. He wasn't complaining, just stating a fact.
Dexter smiled, a thought crossing his mind. "In a few years, when you're a bit bigger, if there's a chance, I can take you to New York to look around."
Hearing this, Carl got instantly excited. "Promise?"
"Promise," Dexter nodded. "Alright, that's it for now. I gotta get back to work. See ya."
"Okay, see ya."
Dexter didn't say much else. He said a quick goodbye to Kevin and Steve and left.
Back at the restaurant.
Dexter mentioned to Veronica that Steve had shown up and covered the nanny fees.
Veronica was relieved she didn't have to spend her own money. "Looks like he's planning to wait for her."
Too bad it's not worth it. He's gonna get cheated on sooner or later.
Dexter thought it, but didn't say it. He just replied casually, "Looks like it."
