Chapter 23 - Crossroads of the heart

Tuesday arrived with the kind of humidity that made the city feel sticky and sluggish, but Mia's mind was anything but still. She moved through her morning routine with mechanical precision, her coffee in hand and her laptop open, but her thoughts were tangled in the events of the past week. Liam's sudden reappearance had shaken something inside her, and Ace's quiet intensity only added layers to her confusion.

She tried to focus on work—emails, manuscript edits, meeting prep—but each notification made her heart flutter in anticipation, wondering if it was Liam reaching out again. She kept telling herself she was being rational. Liam was part of her past. Ace, her present, had been subtly staking his claim on her attention and emotions. But the line between past and present had begun to blur, and she hated how much it unsettled her.

By late morning, Mia received a text from Lily: Lunch? We need a reset from all the chaos.

Mia smiled despite herself and typed back: On my way.

At the café, Lily and James were already waiting, a quiet bubble of familiarity and support. Lily's calm presence had always grounded Mia, and James's straightforward advice provided clarity amidst emotional chaos.

"You look tense," Lily noted immediately. "Still thinking about Liam?"

Mia sighed, stirring her coffee absentmindedly. "I can't stop. He's… here, and he's persistent. I want to forgive him, maybe even give him a chance as a friend, but it's hard."

James leaned back, arms crossed. "You don't owe him anything, Mia. Don't forget that. He left you once. Don't let nostalgia fool you into giving him more than he deserves."

Mia nodded, appreciating their support but still feeling the weight of unresolved feelings. "I know. I'm trying to be careful. But it's… complicated."

Before Lily or James could respond, Ace appeared, sliding into the booth across from Mia. His posture was casual, but his eyes were sharp, tracking her movements with subtle intensity.

"Busy thinking about him again?" Ace asked, voice low, teasing yet edged with concern.

Mia's fingers tightened around her cup. "Maybe."

"Maybe?" Ace echoed, leaning forward slightly. "You mean, definitely yes."

James snorted. "It's obvious."

Ace ignored the commentary, eyes on Mia. "I don't like it. Not one bit. He doesn't get to make you question yourself. Not now. Not ever."

Mia's chest tightened, a mix of frustration and something she didn't want to admit. "Ace… I'm not a child. I can handle my feelings."

"I know you can," he said softly, leaning back but keeping her in his line of sight. "But that doesn't mean I'll just sit back and watch. I care. And I'm not invisible."

Mia's cheeks warmed, caught between exasperation and something more dangerous—a flutter of awareness she refused to name. She appreciated the sincerity, even as it made her heart race.

Lily leaned forward, voice calm. "Mia, it's okay to notice him. But also remember to listen to Ace, and yourself. You need clarity, not pressure."

James added, "Yeah. And don't forget—he's not the only one who wants your attention. Don't let him steamroll the present with the past."

Mia's eyes flicked to Ace, whose expression was unreadable yet intensely present. His gaze softened slightly, just enough for her to notice the subtle protectiveness behind it.

The conversation shifted, trying to find normalcy, but the tension lingered. Mia felt the subtle pull between Liam's persistence and Ace's quiet intensity. Each glance, each word, each slight movement carried meaning, layering the slow burn that had begun to permeate her days.

Later that afternoon, Mia returned to her apartment, exhausted but restless. She sank onto the couch, letting her thoughts run unchecked. Liam's words replayed in her mind: I never stopped caring. She felt the ache of old feelings, the remnants of affection she had tried to bury.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Liam: Hope I'm not overwhelming you. I just want to understand you again.

Mia typed a reply carefully: I need more time. Please respect that.

She set her phone down, staring at the ceiling, realizing that the slow burn between Ace, Liam, and herself was intensifying. Liam's return forced her to confront feelings she thought she had resolved, while Ace's consistent presence reminded her that her present—and perhaps her future—might be far more complicated than she anticipated.

The city lights flickered on outside her window as evening descended, casting long shadows across her living room. Mia allowed herself a moment of reflection. She wasn't rushing. She didn't need to. But she needed to acknowledge her feelings, confront her past, and prepare for the choices that lay ahead.

Because whether she admitted it or not, the slow burn had taken root, and it wasn't going away.
