December in the Punjab arrived like an uninvited guest—quiet, persistent, and impossible to ignore. It did not strike with drama. It seeped. Into the bricks. Into the quilts. Into the joints of a man who stood too long on stone floors.
But Sandalbar had learned to treat discomfort the way it treated bandits and floods: as a practical problem, solved with planning.
That morning, mist lay over the lake in a pale blanket, turning the water into something that looked less like a surface and more like glass. The grapevines on the trellis had shed their leaves weeks ago, but the timber frame remained—now wrapped in warm amber lights, a neat ribbon of electricity powered by the estate generator. In the fog, those lights did not feel ornamental. They felt like a road.
A black Packard rolled forward slowly, tires crunching on damp gravel.
Inside, Fatima Jinnah adjusted her shawl and kept her posture composed, as if she had not just stepped out of Bombay's familiar order into a countryside that most city people only discussed in speeches. Dina sat beside her, bundled into a wool coat, her expression fixed in the stubborn skepticism of an eleven-year-old who assumed adults always exaggerated.
"It will be a farm, Auntie," Dina sighed, crossing her arms tighter. "Mud and buffaloes. Papa is just trying to be nice."
Fatima didn't argue. She had learned that Dina's sulk was not a mood—it was a shield.
The car passed the gate.

A dozen British children were gathered below her in a semi-circle. Sons and daughters of captains, lieutenants, and junior officers—faces pink from the chill, hair damp with fog.
Dina's voice carried cleanly across the water.
"No, no! The ducks are the Navy!" she declared. "You cannot throw stones at the Navy. You feed the Navy. Peter—bring the bread!"
A young boy, the son of Captain Miller, snapped upright as if he had been trained.
"Yes, Dina!"
Jinnah's mouth softened into something close to a smile. His daughter had been on the estate for less than a morning, and she had already converted local leisure into a chain of command.
"She has your command," Fatima said, stepping beside him.
Jinnah didn't look away from the scene. "She has my stubbornness," he corrected. Then, quieter, as though speaking to himself: "Look at them, Fatima. British and Indian children—playing without a thought of who rules whom."
Fatima studied his face instead of the children. The hollow gauntness she remembered—especially after Ruttie's death—was not there. His skin had color. His posture was straighter. His eyes looked… awake.
"You look alive, bhai," she said softly. "I was worried. Your letters were brief."
"The air here is good," Jinnah replied, still watching the lake. "And the work is honest."
Fatima's eyebrow lifted with precise skepticism. "It is not just the air. You are eating properly. You are sleeping. Who is responsible for this miracle?"
Jinnah's gaze flicked, briefly, toward the clinic direction—not quite a smile, not quite an admission.
"A certain nurse," he said. "Nurse D'Souza runs this estate with a terrifying efficiency. If I miss a meal, I receive a reprimand that makes the Viceroy's censure look like a love letter."
Fatima's mouth curved. "Then I must thank her. She has given me my brother back."
Jinnah said nothing, but his silence was the nearest thing to agreement he offered easily.
2. The Paradise Lunch
Lunch was served outdoors, as it had become tradition on Sundays—an estate ritual that quietly did what speeches never could.
The garden tables were arranged with care, white cloths pulled tight, cutlery aligned, steam rising from dishes that belonged to winter. The spread was not theatrical. It was deliberate.
Sarson ka saag, rich with fresh butter. Makki ki roti stacked in neat piles. Roast chicken carved cleanly. Platters of oranges from Sargodha—bright as coins against the dull season.
The atmosphere on the lawn did not feel like occupation. It felt like a resort that had never been advertised.
"More custard, Mrs. Blackwood?" Jinnah offered, as if hosting was simply another administrative function.
Eleanor Blackwood laughed—then accepted the bowl anyway. "Oh, I couldn't—Mr. Jinnah, you are spoiling us. Arthur wrote to his mother that we are living in paradise. She thinks he has gone mad from the heat. She cannot believe we have fresh cream in the Punjab."
"It is civilization, Madam," Jinnah replied evenly. "It exists where we create it."
The British wives chatted without lowering their voices. They had found their rhythm on the estate. Some painted the lake in watercolors. Others volunteered at the clinic, learning local routines with surprising seriousness.
And a few had begun to behave like inspectors—curious, sharp-eyed, and dangerously competent.
Mrs. Emily Vance leaned forward. She was the wife of a junior lieutenant, but she carried herself like someone who understood systems and quietly resented waste.
"Mr. Jinnah," she said, "I must ask you about the weaving sheds. I visited Chak 96 yesterday."
"Did you?" Jinnah asked, mild enough to be polite, attentive enough to be dangerous. "I hope the weavers were polite."
"They were charming," Emily replied. "But the cloth—the khaddar. It's remarkable. My uncle owns a textile mill in Lyallpur. Mass-market cotton. Machines. Volume. But what your women are producing… the thread count, the durability… it's superior to machine cloth."
"It is hand-spun with care," Jinnah said. "Not churned out by a smokestack."
Emily smiled, half amused, half vindicated. "My uncle doesn't believe me. He says village cloth is always rough. I told him he is a fool."
A chuckle moved around the table.
"I was wondering," she continued, leaning in slightly as if proposing something improper, "could I invite him? To see it? He is a skeptic, but he is a businessman. If he saw your production model—the decentralized sheds—I think he would be astounded."
Jinnah paused just long enough for the silence to feel intentional.
Lyallpur, Bilal murmured inside his mind. The industrial heartland. If a mill owner validates your model, you don't just sell cloth. You sell the system.
"Your uncle is welcome, Mrs. Vance," Jinnah said at last, gracious but precise. "Skepticism is the father of quality. If I can convince a Lyallpur mill owner, I can convince anyone."
Emily's face brightened. "I'll wire him today!"
Jinnah's tea remained untouched for a moment, as if he were already calculating what a single impressed industrialist could do to a narrative no one in Lahore had managed to control.
3. The End of the Sulk
As the afternoon slipped toward evening, the lake turned pink under a low winter sun. The fog had thinned into a soft haze, and the estate felt—briefly—like a world that had no outside.
Dina came running up to her father with cheeks flushed from cold and triumph. In her hands was a basket.
"Papa! Look!" she shouted, forgetting decorum entirely. "We found six! The Soldier-Ducks hid them in the reeds!"
Jinnah took the basket with care, as if handling something valuable. "Soldier-Ducks?"
"Yes!" Dina said, exasperated that he didn't understand immediately. "Peter calls them the Royal Navy, but I told him they are the Sandalbar Guard!"
She grabbed a piece of sponge cake from the table and stuffed it into her mouth, chewing like a child who had finally accepted that she was safe.
"This is good," she mumbled. "Better than Bombay."
Then she looked up at him—eyes bright, no sulk left to hide behind.
"Are we staying, Papa? For a long time?"
Jinnah stared at her for a moment. Then past her—toward the lawn, the officers' families, the calm order that had replaced panic, the estate he had carved out of mud and pressure.
He brushed a crumb from her cheek with an intimacy that did not belong to public speeches.
"We are staying, Dina," he said softly. "This is our base. And you are its commander."
Dina grinned and saluted him with a sticky hand, then ran back to her "battalion" by the water.
Fatima stood beside him, watching the child disappear into a crowd that—on paper—should not have existed.
"You have built a world, Jin," she said quietly. "A world where the British work for you, the villagers pray for you, and your daughter is happy."
Jinnah's gaze drifted toward the horizon where the sun lowered behind distant fields.
"It is a fragile world, Fatima," he murmured. "But it is ours."
