Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15: THE SHADOW MOVES

Maya's boots whispered against the pavement as she slipped into the shadows, heart hammering against her ribs. Every instinct screamed at her to turn around, to run. But she couldn't—not now. Too much depended on what she had just uncovered.

The city felt alive in a different way at night, every flickering streetlight a potential witness. Maya knew she was being followed, the subtle rhythm of footsteps behind her confirming it. She didn't look back. To do so was to play their game.

She reached the small café she had identified earlier, the one where cameras supposedly didn't reach the corners she needed. Ducking inside, she slid into a booth near the back. Her hands shook slightly as she opened her bag and pulled out the small encrypted drive she had managed to copy.

Her phone vibrated. Unknown number.

"Stop," the voice said, low and calm, but every word carried weight.

Maya's fingers tightened around the device. "I can't. Not yet."

"You shouldn't have come back," the voice continued. "You're making it worse—for you, and for everyone around you."

Her chest tightened. "I don't care. I'm not leaving until I understand everything."

There was silence on the other end. Then: "You've been warned. This ends badly if you continue."

Maya hung up, breathing shallow. The warning only fueled her determination. Every shadow, every flicker of movement outside the café reminded her she had little time. She glanced at the drive again, seeing the names, the codes, the hidden connections.

Someone approached the door, hooded and quick. Maya froze, but her mind raced. She had already mapped the patterns, anticipated possible intercepts. The figure paused, then moved past her table as if she were invisible. A small victory, but a tense one.

Minutes passed. Then the phone rang again. This time, it was Kelvin.

"Maya?" His voice was urgent, controlled.

"They know I'm here," she said.

"Don't engage anyone," he instructed. "Get out safely. Now."

"I can't leave it. Not yet," she whispered.

A deep sigh from Kelvin. "You're walking a fine line. One wrong step—"

"I know."

The words were heavy with truth. Maya packed the drive and slipped out through the back door. She moved with precision, every step calculated, every turn chosen. The city's pulse around her masked the tension of being hunted, but she felt it in every nerve.

A call came again. She didn't answer. She didn't need to. Whoever was watching, whoever was trying to intimidate her, had made their point. The warnings, the calls, the shadows—they were testing her. And she had passed, for now.

As she disappeared into the night, Maya allowed herself one thought: knowledge was dangerous, yes—but ignorance was far worse. And she would not stop until she had the answers she needed.
