Chapter 63 - Chapter 63 – Shy Mikoto

The arena was alive with tension, the roar of the crowd echoing off the high walls as the examiner's voice rang out, sharp and commanding.

"The sixth match: Uchiha Nao versus Imagawa Toru."

Uchiha Nao stepped forward with calm confidence. Like Mikoto, she was a female member of the prestigious Uchiha Clan, her dark hair cascading down her shoulders and her Sharingan glinting faintly in the sunlight. Already awakened to the one-tomoe stage, her eyes betrayed a cunning awareness, a perceptive intelligence that matched her deadly skill.

Opposite her, Imagawa Toru—Hyuga Yu's teammate—tensed, a bead of sweat forming at his temple. As a civilian ninja, he possessed talent, but against a bloodline limit user like Nao, he was already at a tremendous disadvantage. He could feel the weight of the crowd's gaze, the scrutiny of the examiners, and the unspoken expectation that he survive this encounter.

The examiner raised his hand, and the signal to start was given.

In an instant, Nao's hands moved with surgical precision. Shuriken flew from her fingers, each spinning silently through the air, forming a cage that perfectly blocked every escape route for her opponent.

Imagawa Toru reacted quickly, using all his skills and instincts to dodge, but each move was anticipated. The Uchiha were masters of Shurikenjutsu, not just any Shurikenjutsu, but the advanced Manipulated Shuriken Technique—allowing them to control multiple projectiles simultaneously with precision.

Nao didn't even need to resort to Fire Release techniques or Genjutsu this time. Her clan's innate skills were enough. Imagawa Toru, exhausted and cornered, had no choice but to surrender.

"The sixth match: Uchiha Nao wins."

Aomizu appeared at once, tending to the exhausted Imagawa Toru with a swift touch. His movements were efficient, yet gentle, restoring the young ninja's strength in moments.

[Completed the treatment of Imagawa Toru, rewarded with a white orb.]

[Congratulations on obtaining 20 Chakra.]

The crowd's attention immediately shifted to the next bout.

"The seventh match: Sakamoto Manatsu versus Higashino Miho."

This match was more balanced, two civilian ninjas testing their limits against one another. Their strengths were nearly identical, both having survived the first two rounds with skill and determination. The fight was intense, with each strike, kick, and counter carefully measured.

Despite their efforts, neither could gain a decisive advantage. Bloodied and bruised, they finally collapsed almost simultaneously, unable to continue. The match ended in a draw.

Eagerly, the medical ninja team rushed in, finally believing they would have a chance to prove their worth. But Aomizu, already adept in medical ninjutsu, stepped forward, effortlessly treating both injured fighters simultaneously and returning them to the spectator stands. The medical team froze, momentarily stunned.

Even if your skills are good, they thought, leaving no space for anyone else to act is… unfair!

Aomizu, however, didn't notice—or perhaps didn't care. His focus was entirely on the rewards flowing into his growing Chakra reserves.

The eighth match commenced.

"Haruko versus Jin."

Both combatants were from the Hidden Sand Village. Haruko, Baki's teammate, had once ambushed Kushina with Ryōto, while Jin was Pakura's remaining subordinate. Jin's skill had reached Chunin level, while Haruko, though strong, was slightly weaker.

The outcome was predictable: Jin emerged victorious. Yet, he held back throughout the match, careful not to cause Haruko serious injury. Aomizu, ever vigilant for opportunities to heal and gain Chakra, silently cursed his own limitations. He had missed out on a chance for reward.

"The eighth match: Jin wins."

With that, the defeated and victorious were led off the field, and preparations for the next round proceeded immediately.

---

The ninth match brought a formidable confrontation.

"Sasaki Ayami versus Baki."

Ayami, a student under Mikoto, faced an uphill battle. Baki, the strongest Genin candidate from Hidden Sand Village, had a reputation that preceded him. Even with her mentor's guidance and Mukai Yuki cheering her on, Ayami couldn't hope to overcome the massive strength gap.

A single, precise Wind Release attack from Baki ended the contest.

"The ninth match: Baki wins."

Aomizu efficiently brought Ayami back to the stands, his hands working skillfully to heal her wounds.

[Completed the treatment of Sasaki Ayami, rewarded with a blue orb.]

[Congratulations on obtaining 50 Chakra.]

"Thank you, Big Brother Aomizu!" she said, gratitude shining in her eyes. Though injured, she felt a comforting warmth from the quick treatment.

Finally, the tenth match began.

Motoi, the last Ninja from Kumogakure, faced Nishijima Hayato, Uchiha Nao's last remaining teammate. Despite a name that might suggest greatness, Nishijima was no match for Motoi. His strength, while respectable, paled in comparison to Motoi's experience and skill.

In a swift series of movements, Motoi subdued him, and the match concluded.

"The tenth match: Motoi wins."

[Completed the treatment of Nishijima Hayato, rewarded with a blue orb.]

[Congratulations on obtaining 50 Chakra.]

As the fighters departed, the examiner announced the pairings for the next stage: the third exam.

First match: Minato versus Motoi

Second match: Killer B versus Hyuga Yu

Third match: Uzumaki Kushina versus Baki

Fourth match: Uchiha Nao versus Jin

Aomizu would have a bye for the first round, then face the winner of Minato and Motoi. Success there would allow him to advance further.

"The final third exam will occur in one month," the examiner explained. "Daimyo and nobles will attend to watch. During this time, you are encouraged to gather information about your opponents to strategize and prepare."

He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in.

"Remember, promotion to Chunin will be based on skill and performance, not mere victories. Only exceptional effort will be rewarded. If there are no further questions, you may be dismissed."

As the ninja filtered out of the central tower, Troy exchanged a subtle glance with Rasa—a silent reminder to honor their covert agreement.

Hiruzen Sarutobi observed the scene from a distance, carefully noting every interaction. Though the Five Great Shinobi Villages maintained an appearance of peace, subtle rivalries and hidden agendas simmered beneath the surface. Even minor actions could escalate quickly, so vigilance was essential.

The Kazekage and Raikage would not attend the third exam, Hiruzen decided. Only Jonin from both villages tasked with guarding the Daimyo and nobles would be present. This was a precautionary measure, pre-established when the joint Chunin Exams began.

After the Forest of Death trials concluded, Kushina hurried back to the Senju Clan Compound. She had not seen Yumiko for four days and her concern weighed heavily on her mind.

Earlier, Hiruzen Sarutobi had already been informed about Yumiko's status. Without hesitation, he agreed to her temporary placement in Konoha for safety and education. That very night, Yumiko was escorted to the Senju Compound, where she finally met Uzumaki Mito, the wise elder she had only heard of in stories.

Kushina's arrival, frantic and full of energy, caused a familiar look of helplessness to appear on Mikoto's face. She understood Kushina's agitation—Yumiko's well-being mattered greatly to her.

---

Later, as the evening sun dipped low, Mikoto felt a gentle touch on her shoulder. It was Aomizu. The rest of the crowd and participants had already dispersed, leaving them alone.

Mikoto, usually shy and reserved, felt her cheeks flush deeply. She didn't resist—nor did she shy away. Instead, she subtly leaned into his presence, her trust and unspoken feelings revealing themselves in that quiet moment. A bond, delicate yet undeniable, began to solidify between them.

The world outside the arena faded away, leaving only two hearts cautiously but surely drawn together. Even shy Mikoto, normally cautious in all things, found herself offering her trust… her affection… in a way she had never imagined possible.

---

The preliminary rounds had ended, the stage was set for the third exam, and relationships between participants, mentors, and allies continued to evolve. Yet beneath the surface, forces and secrets beyond the participants' understanding were already moving, preparing for conflicts that would reach far beyond the exam arena.

The quiet moments of trust, care, and subtle connection, however, reminded everyone present of one simple truth: even in a world filled with battle and strategy, bonds forged through concern and attention could be as powerful as any technique.

And in that moment, Aomizu and Mikoto's story—like the gentle rise of the sun over Konoha—was just beginning.
