When they finished eating, Maelina was the first to rise.
She dusted her hands on her skirt and glanced toward the sky.
"We really need to move," she said. "If we're going to reach Elam Hills before curfew."
Zarek nodded and stood. His eyes shifted to Eliora.
"Get up," he said.
Eliora wiped her hands quickly and stood too, adjusting her hat as she followed them outside.
Horses shifted where they were tied, snorting as their riders approached.
Zarek untied his horse first, running a hand briefly along its neck before mounting in one smooth motion.
Maelina followed right after him, climbing onto hers with ease.
Eliora stood beside the carriage, waiting. She didn't even realize she was waiting until the silence stretched a little too long.
She looked at Zarek. He was adjusting the reins. He didn't come over to lift her like he usually did.
For a second, disappointment tugged quietly at her chest.
She looked away quickly, almost embarrassed at herself.
