By the time the carriage got close to Volkar, night had already fallen.
The sky was dark, stretched wide above them. The road had grown quieter too, and there were fewer travelers. Even the horses seemed to move slowly.
Eliora had been staring out the window for most of the journey.
Her mind wouldn't rest.
Thoughts moved through her head in circles about her parents, Zarek, the mating, the bond, the heat she had felt earlier...
She couldn't settle on one feeling long enough to understand it. But as Volkar finally came into view, something pulled her attention away from her thoughts.
The road ahead was lit, but not by lamps. There were flames. Dozens of them, each floating in the air on both sides of the road.
Eliora leaned closer to the window, her brows drawing together.
The fire wasn't attached to anything. No torch. No pole. No stand.
She blinked once, thinking her eyes were playing tricks on her.
They weren't.
"Ria…"
Ria leaned closer immediately. "Yes, my lady?"
