Chapter 121: System Panel Update!
"You..." Edward struggled to form words. He pointed at Dorothy, then at himself, and finally at the sky. "Are you sure you're saying 'holy water'? Not something like 'Unholy Water'? The kind brewed from the saliva of ten thousand vengeful spirits mixed with hellfire and brimstone?"
Dorothy was amused by his comparison, laughing so hard she trembled. Her Gothic gown shivered with her, adding a captivating allure.
"Of course it's holy water," she finally stopped laughing, looking at Edward with a 'you're-so-clueless' expression. "It was a gift from a suitor who's been fighting those winged choir boys in Heaven for God knows how many millennia. This stuff, where I come from, is like a designer handbag in your human world. It's a rare collectible, acquired through conquest, and it usually just sits in my display cabinet collecting dust."
This explanation... while still full of logical gaps, somehow made bizarre sense.
Edward's eye twitched.
Her taste was certainly... unique.
"Alright, I'll accept your sourcing is legitimate, for now." Edward took a deep breath, rebooting his brain. "So, back to the original question. You want me to help you catch a living person on your home turf. And my payment is... a bottle of holy water?"
"A whole canister," Dorothy emphasized, holding up a finger. "Enough for you to bathe in. Or would you prefer mine? If you're into that sort of thing, I can accommodate you."
Edward automatically ignored the second half of her teasing.
Holy water, while not particularly useful to him personally given his Purification and Holy Light abilities, the concept of Heaven's holy water piqued his interest. He wondered what the difference was between it and the holy water he'd gotten from his system. He'd have Victor analyze it later.
"How do I guarantee my safety?" Edward stared into Dorothy's eyes. "What if you just grab me too once I'm inside? My soul must be pretty 'sweet' to you, right?"
"Heheheh..." Dorothy laughed again. "You're very clever and cautious. I like that. Don't worry, I swear on the name of the Underworld Lord—as long as you help me catch that living person, I will not only ensure your safe return but also throw in a half-day tour of the Underworld's highlights, full VIP treatment included."
"Deal." Edward finally nodded. "When and where?"
"I'll come find you on Christmas Eve," Dorothy stood, satisfied, her smile unsettling. "Then I'll personally 'take you away.'"
"Take me away..." Edward chewed on the words. They sounded ominous, like he'd be in a coffin the next second.
"Well then, see you later, my interesting little hunter." Dorothy blew him a kiss, said no more, and turned to leave.
Her figure merged with the parking lot shadows, vanishing without a trace in moments, as if she'd never appeared.
Only a faint, cold yet sweet scent lingered.
Edward stood there for a while, rubbing his temples, feeling somewhat overloaded by today's information dump.
He mounted his Fenrir motorcycle, twisted the throttle, and roared toward home.
Back home, warm lights and the aroma of dinner dispelled some of the Underworld's chill.
John and Sarah had already taken Lily out for a walk, leaving only Emma and Esther in the living room.
Emma was engrossed in her book, "360 Methods of Dissection," her expression as focused as if studying some ancient forbidden text.
Esther, meanwhile, was painting on her canvas. The content of her painting was still beautiful and sunny, completely at odds with her true personality.
Edward returned to his room, pulled out his phone, found Carrie's number, and dialed.
After a few rings, the call connected, and Carrie's slightly timid voice came through. "Hello? Edward?"
"It's me, Carrie." Edward tried to make his voice sound gentle. "How've you been? Keeping up with your telekinesis practice?"
"Yes! I practice every day!" Carrie immediately replied, her voice tinged with nervousness and eagerness to prove herself. "Lily... her method is really helpful!"
"That's great, you're making good progress." Edward praised her, then got to the point. "Actually, I need your help with something."
"Okay! What is it?" Carrie agreed without hesitation.
"On Christmas Day, I might have to go out for something. I'm a little worried about these three... sisters being home alone. So, are you free that day? Could you come over and keep an eye on them for me?"
He felt a bit guilty saying this.
Asking a kind, innocent telekinetic girl to babysit a demon incarnate, a highly intelligent sociopath, and a disguised loli with the mental age of thirty...
But he had no choice. Frank would definitely have his own family party, Jennifer and Maria had to be with their families, and Alan, lacking a physical body, couldn't help.
After thinking it over, only the gentle-natured Carrie, who also had superpowers, seemed most suitable.
At least if anything happened, she'd have the ability to protect herself.
"Of course!" Carrie's voice was filled with obvious surprise and joy. "I'd love to help!"
"Great, then it's settled." Edward sighed in relief. "I'll have Sarah pick you up."
Hanging up the phone, Edward let out a long breath.
A trip to the Underworld, a Christmas concert, a living soul—this Christmas was destined to be anything but peaceful.
He lay down on the bed, staring at the ceiling.
Edward closed his eyes and, with a thought, a translucent blue screen visible only to him unfolded before his eyes.
