Chapter 113: I'm a Vampire! Bella: Oh God, My Friend is a Demon Hunter!
Mr. Banner's voice droned through the biology classroom like white noise. But in the back corner, the atmosphere was wound tight as a guitar string about to snap.
Edward Cullen's body was rigid as marble. His hands were clenched into fists under the desk, knuckles white from the strain. He didn't look at Edward Connor beside him, nor at Bella on his other side. He just stared intently at the microscope on the desk, as if trying to bore a hole through it with his gaze. Every nerve in his body screamed—the sweet scent radiating from Bella was like fire, scorching his throat that had been parched for over a century.
This was torture. An extreme temptation and agony he'd never experienced before.
Meanwhile, Edward Connor, sitting next to him, looked completely relaxed. He propped his chin on one hand, lazily spinning a pen with the other, even taking the time to raise an eyebrow at a crow flying past the window.
"Pathetic."
A voice suddenly echoed in Edward Cullen's mind again, carrying a hint of lazy mockery.
"Smelling it but not being able to taste it. It's like putting a porterhouse steak in front of a... vegetarian who's been starving for three hundred years. Oh wait, I forgot—you guys actually are 'vegetarians.'"
Edward Cullen's body trembled violently. He finally turned his head, his golden eyes filled with shock, rage, and wariness, glaring at the boy with his name sitting beside him.
Edward Connor didn't even glance at him. He simply raised his hand, interrupting Mr. Banner's lecture. "Mr. Banner, regarding mitochondrial energy conversion—you just mentioned the proton motive force in ATP synthase. Actually, in certain extreme anaerobic environments, there's a more efficient reverse transport mechanism. Theoretically..."
He launched into a fluent explanation, citing research papers and technical terms that left Mr. Banner visibly impressed. In the end, Mr. Banner could only adjust his glasses, offer praise, and tell him to sit down. Throughout the entire exchange, Edward Connor seemed completely oblivious to the vampire on the verge of losing control beside him.
This complete dismissal chilled Edward Cullen more than any direct threat could. What exactly was this boy named Edward Connor? Not only could he block his mind-reading, but he could also project thoughts directly into his head. He knew everything about him, yet Edward Cullen knew nothing about him.
He was like an experienced hunter, casually toying with trapped prey.
In the days that followed, Forks remained perpetually rainy. As they spent more time together, Bella found Edward Connor to be an enigma. He was too intelligent for a high school student—every subject came effortlessly to him. He seemed friendly enough, able to chat with anyone, but underneath was a strange detachment, as if everything in this world was merely a specimen for his observation.
Edward Cullen, meanwhile, ran hot and cold with Bella—sometimes distant and aloof, other times staring at her with an intensely complex expression that left her confused and on edge.
Until that afternoon, which changed everything.
In the school parking lot, Bella was heading toward her old pickup truck when a blue van suddenly lost control, spinning on the wet pavement and careening directly toward her!
Time seemed to slow. Bella froze in place, her mind blank with terror, only able to watch as the huge metal beast grew larger and larger in her vision.
At that critical moment, a figure appeared between her and the van with superhuman speed.
It was Edward Cullen!
CRASH!
He stopped the speeding van with one hand! The front crumpled under his palm, forming a deep dent, yet he remained perfectly still.
The surrounding students were stunned. Time seemed to freeze for several seconds before the screaming started.
Bella collapsed to the ground, still in shock, staring at the impossible scene before her. After stopping the van, Edward Cullen gave her one long, meaningful look before quickly disappearing into the crowd.
Not far away, Edward Connor leaned against his heavy motorcycle, Fenrir. He'd witnessed the entire incident, no surprise on his face. He simply let out a slow whistle, then turned his gaze in the direction Cullen had vanished, a knowing smile playing on his lips.
This incident completely shattered Bella's worldview. She couldn't consider Edward Cullen, who'd stopped a car with his bare hands, to be an ordinary person.
One weekend, they were hiking in the forest outside town. Under Bella's relentless questioning, Edward Cullen finally confessed everything to her.
"I'm a vampire," he said, revealing the earth-shattering truth in a silent clearing among the trees.
Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, falling on him. His pale skin refracted a brilliant, diamond-like sparkle.
Bella was briefly gripped by shock and fear, but as she looked at Edward Cullen's anguished, honest face, an even stronger emotion welled up inside her.
But then, a memory she'd dismissed as a joke struck her like lightning.
"I enjoy hunting vampires and werewolves."
Edward Connor's introduction from the first day now sounded absolutely terrifying.
"Oh my God..." Bella's face instantly went paler than Cullen's. She grabbed his arm, her voice shaking. "Edward Connor! He... he said he likes hunting vampires! Holy shit! Did he... has he known this whole time?"
Edward Cullen's expression became incredibly grave. He nodded slowly. "I'm afraid so. The first time I met him and tried to read his thoughts, he already knew what I was." He recalled the taunting words the boy had planted in his mind that day in biology class—the feeling of being completely exposed still sent chills down his spine.
"He's not normal, Bella." Cullen's voice was low and urgent. "His abilities are... different. I can't read him. You need to stay away from him."
This time, the fear was for Edward Cullen. Bella couldn't imagine how dangerous it would be for him and his family if Connor really was a demon hunter.
To reassure Bella and help her understand his world better, Edward Cullen decided to take her home to meet his family.
The Cullen house was hidden deep in the forest—a modern, beautiful glass structure. When Edward Cullen brought Bella inside, his family was already waiting in the living room.
There was the kind, gentle "father" Carlisle; the elegant, beautiful "mother" Esme; the tall, cheerful Emmett; the stunning, Barbie-doll-perfect Rosalie, who looked less than thrilled; the petite, pixie-like Alice, now looking worried; and the perpetually uncomfortable Jasper.
"Welcome, Bella," Carlisle said warmly, his presence radiating the calm authority of a doctor.
"Hi," Bella replied nervously.
"We've heard about you from Edward," Esme said gently. "And we've also heard about... the other new arrival in town."
At the mention of "the other new arrival," the atmosphere in the living room noticeably darkened.
"I've seen it," Alice suddenly spoke, her eyes distant, as if looking at something no one else could see. "I've seen fragments... about that Edward Connor. His future is completely blurred—I can't see anything clearly. But... I saw him standing at our doorstep, with... a weapon in his hand."
