Chapter 105: I Treated You Like a Brother, But You're Getting Sent Away With Me?
After a night of rest, Carrie's mental energy hadn't fully recovered, but her complexion was much better.
Edward, on the other hand, showed up at school looking completely refreshed, as if nothing had happened.
The bloody massacre that occurred deep in the forest last night seemed like an unreal nightmare, completely washed away by the morning sun and the noisy chaos of the school campus.
During history class, the old professor was lecturing about the Civil War, droning on and on, and the dry content made every student in the classroom drowsy.
Edward rested his chin on one hand, idly twirling his pen, his thoughts drifting far away.
Carrie's telekinesis had improved rapidly, but she still needed more "after-school tutoring." Just as he was thinking this, the dismissal bell saved everyone.
"Edward Connor, please come to my office," the history professor said, adjusting his reading glasses and calling out his name.
Edward stood up with some surprise and followed the professor to the office.
"Here's the situation, Edward," the professor said, pulling out a document from a stack and handing it over. "The school has a one-month exchange student program with a high school in Washington State.
After discussion by the school board, we've decided to give this valuable opportunity to you."
Edward took the document and glanced at it. Destination: Forks, Forks High School, Washington State.
Forks? Why did that place sound familiar?
"Sir, why me?" Edward felt a headache coming on.
"Because you're our school's most outstanding student, in both academics and character," the professor's tone was full of pride. "We want you to represent our school and show your best."
"What about Frank?" Edward immediately thought of his best friend. "His grades are excellent too; I think he's more suited for this kind of public thing than I am."
The professor smiled and pointed to another document on the desk: "Frank DiAmico is also excellent, so he'll represent our school in another, more important academic exchange program in New York City.
You two are the pride of our school; we have high expectations for both of you."
Edward was completely speechless.
So neither he nor Frank could escape—they were thoroughly volunteered by the school.
Noon, cafeteria.
Edward, Frank, Jennifer, and Carrie sat together, and the atmosphere at the table was heavy.
"This is bullshit!" Frank aggressively stabbed the steak on his plate with his fork, venting his frustration. "Are we like the school's show ponies? Paraded around wherever they want! Going to New York! Sounds fancy, but really I'm just gonna be a prop for those Ivy League prep school kids! I'm not cool with this!"
"I'm in the same boat," Edward shrugged and took a sip of Coke. "I have to go to some backwater town called Forks for a month, where apparently it's rainy and gloomy year-round, and you never see the sun."
"Wow, are you two getting exiled?" A bright female voice spoke up beside them.
"Don't say that, Nettie," Jennifer rolled her eyes at her, then reached out and took Edward's hand, leaning against him naturally. "It's only a month; it'll fly by."
Carrie lowered her head, silently cutting the food on her plate without speaking, but her slightly pursed lips still revealed her disappointed mood.
"You guys should be grateful!" Nettie said with an envious look. "Who told you two you're the golden boys of our school? Smart, hot, and the center of attention wherever you go.
Of course good opportunities fall to you.
Unlike us, stuck rotting in school."
When Frank heard the term "golden boys," his expression improved slightly, but he still stubbornly said, "I'd rather rot in school than go to New York and deal with those nerds."
Edward ignored Frank's complaints; he could sense Carrie's low spirits.
He gently nudged Carrie's leg with his foot under the table. Carrie's body trembled, and she looked up, meeting Edward's gaze.
Edward didn't speak, just gave her a gentle smile.
Carrie's cheeks instantly flushed pink. She quickly lowered her head, but most of her inner disappointment was dispelled by that smile.
After school, Edward returned home and told his parents about the exchange program.
"Washington State? Forks?" Sarah was preparing dinner in the kitchen and paused after hearing the place name. "Sounds like a really quiet place. Well, it's good to get out, a change of scenery will do you good. A month, right? Mom will help you pack."
"Awesome! My son's going to be an exchange student!" John, meanwhile, seemed very excited. He grabbed a beer from the fridge and raised it to Edward. "This is your first step toward the wider world! Worth celebrating!"
That evening, Edward called Lily, Emma, and Esther to the living room.
"I'm going away for a month," Edward said directly, looking at the three of them with a serious expression. "While I'm gone, you three need to behave yourselves. No causing trouble, no bullying classmates, and absolutely no using any special abilities outside, understood?"
"Where's Edward going?" Lily blinked her innocent big eyes, the first to come closer.
"Going to a faraway place to study."
"Will you bring us presents?" Emma also walked over, her tone as calm as ever, but the meaning in her words was clear.
Esther stood aside with her arms crossed, scoffing, "Like they behave when you're here anyway."
"Of course I'll bring presents," Edward ignored Esther's scoff. He patted Lily and Emma's heads. "As long as you're good, everyone gets something when I come back."
"Yay! Thank you, Edward!" Lily immediately cheered, her face full of innocent smiles.
"Thank you," Emma also rarely showed a slight smile.
Esther pouted but didn't say anything more.
Seeing the three of them being so well-behaved, Edward breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Late that night, Edward lay in his room and called Carrie.
"Hello?" Carrie's slightly hesitant voice came from the other end.
"It's me," Edward's voice was gentle. "You asleep yet?"
"Not yet... reading."
"Don't be too bummed out; a month will pass quickly," Edward said. "While I'm away, you need to be extra careful. Don't stop your telekinesis training, but remember, safety first, don't push yourself."
"Okay, I know," Carrie's voice was soft but firm. "You... you take care of yourself too."
"Don't worry."
After hanging up, Edward went into the bathroom to take a shower.
As he stood in front of the mirror, looking at his reflection, he spoke.
"Alan."
The mirror rippled like water, and Alan's face—identical to Maria's but with a completely different energy—emerged.
"What's up?" Alan's voice sounded directly in Edward's mind.
"I'm leaving for a month. Please tell Maria for me, so she doesn't worry."
"No problem," Alan replied straightforwardly.
"Alright, thanks."
After giving instructions to Alan, Edward stripped off his clothes and turned on the shower.
The warm water cascaded over his body, washing away the day's fatigue.
After showering, Edward dried off, put on his pajamas, and silently recited in his mind.
"Devil May Cry."
Edward pushed open the door and, passing through the office, arrived at a bedroom filled with a sensual atmosphere.
Jennifer, wearing a sexy silk nightgown, was lying on her side on the bed, propping her head with one hand, looking at him with seductive eyes.
"Master, you're finally here. I've been waiting."
