The world was young, and magic was as common as mud.
Riverwood Village sat on the edge of the world. To the East, the jagged peaks of the Cloud Mountains pierced the heavens, home to the untouchable Immortals. To the West, the sky was perpetually bruised with twilight, marking the domain of the Night Realm.
Here, in the middle, humans lived. They farmed, they fished, and they tried very hard not to be noticed by the gods or the monsters.
Elara was eighteen years old, and she was currently arguing with a turnip.
"You are being stubborn," Elara told the vegetable, tugging at its leafy green top. "Come out. The soup needs you."
The turnip held fast to the earth.
A small, glowing ball of light—a Forest Wisp—floated out from the trees. It buzzed around Elara's head like a curious bumblebee.
