The urgency in Linton's voice cuts through my racing thoughts as I instinctively begin to slow the vehicle. Don't stop, she commands from somewhere behind me, her tone leaving no room for argument.
The car door flies open and Linton launches herself inside, followed quickly by Christopher and Paulina. The children's frightened sobs fill the confined space, their terror palpable as they cling to each other. My heart hammers against my ribs as Paulina scrambles over the center console into the passenger seat, her hands fumbling with the trunk release. Christopher slides in beside her while Linton climbs through the back, her movements swift and practiced.
Someone else needs to drive, I manage to say, my voice barely steady. My hands are shaking too violently to maintain proper control of the wheel.
