Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Lillian walks into the classroom smiling, the holidays had been wonderful and now she was looking forward to meeting her only two friends again.

"Good morning Lillian" Greeted Dennis the assistant class rep and Lillian's seat mate

"Oh Dennis good morning"

"How was the weekend"

"Well it was nice, mostly boring but nice"

"I see this one you are brimming with Joy, what's up"

"Ahhh, nothing important"

"I see so what did you do during the weekend"

"Nothing apart from being at home"

"Oh okay that's good" said Dennis who was trying to start a conversation with Lillian who was obviously not interested, it pained him to see how absent minded she was while talking to him and although she never said so he knew that the reason she was smiling this much was because she was looking forward to meeting Ruby again after being apart during the weekend, at least that's what he thought and that's why he was even more annoyed.

Dennis and Ruby was once childhood friends, although they ain't neighbors they had attended the same creche, nursery, primary and now high school, throughout their time together, each step that drew Reuben closer to being popular with the girls also drew him further away from Dennis, until they finally became mere acquaintance. Dennis had always wondered what Reuben has that he didn't, he was more intelligent than Reuben, he was basically the most intelligent person in their class under normal circumstances without counting weirdos, he was the assistant class rep, he might not be as tall as Reuben but he wasn't short to say the least, he might not be all that handsome but he was sure that he could compete with with Reuben in terms of looks, so why do no one pay him any attention? This question has always made him wonder, and the more he thinks about it the angrier and more jealous of Reuben he gets.

As he sat there pondering this over and thinking of what to say to Lillian, Reuben walks in and he saw how Lillian's smile broadened, this added to the anger already forming in him.

"What does Reuben have I don't" he thought, although Lillian could have easily red his mind to tell why he was angry but she was too occupied with Reuben to even notice that her seatmate was angry.

"Hay Ruby, nice to see you again how was your weekend"

"Ruby huh? You remember what i told you the day I asked you to call me Ruby?" Said Reuben.

"Don't get cocky with me just because I called you by that name, if you ask me I will say you are reading too much into it"

"Really, well I guess am allowed to fantasize about things myself, aren't I?"

"I asked you how was your weekend?"

"Oh it was great"

"Apart from the fact that you almost set your house aflame that is right?" Said Saraphina.

"Oh you just have to go and say it don't you?"

"Why not, are you ashamed of your own deeds?"

"You almost set your house aflame?" Asked Lillian.

"It's not like it was on purpose or anything, it was a mistake"

"Yeah and such mistake almost got your home burned down "

"Stop making it look like a big deal, it was just a small fire"

"Oh yeah, tell that to the stuffs that got burned"

"Oh Saraphina would you _ _" just then a teacher entered the class.

During break time Dennis approached Lillian again, he wanted to get close to her, but the more he tries the more futile it seems, not just Lillian, every girl in school seems to be infatuated with him, even the so called weirdo Saraphina was close friends with Reuben, it seems as if he has some kind of magnetism that draws girls to him.

"Oh hay Lillian, where are you heading to?" he asked.

"Oh it's sport period I was just going out to join the activities"

"Really, I never knew you were into sports, so what group did you sign up with"

"Actually I haven't signed up with any group yet, to be honest I never had any intention to at first"

"I see, so what changed your mind?"

"Oh Reuben said it was part of exercise and that it's a faster way to make more friends"

"Reuben huh?" He thought. Lillian stares at him.

"Is anything wrong?"

"No, not really, why do you ask?" Lillian smiles.

"Don't tell me that you are jealous of Reuben?"

"Huh, I have no idea what you are talking about, why would I be jealous of him" Lillian stares at him smiling broadly.

"I understand how you feel, but being jealous with Reuben isn't going to change anything"

"You're really creeping me out Lillian, what are you talking about?"

"Creeping you out huh" thought Lillian "I guess that's how most of you see's us, as a creep or a wierdo, that's why Reuben will forever be different from the rest of you, unlike you, he admires us, he doesn't think we are wierd one bit"

"Huh, hello!!! Why did you suddenly go mute?" Asked Dennis. Lillian smiles.

"Oh nothing, excuse me" she leaves. Dennis stood there confused.

"What was that about. What did I do wrong?" He thought.

Reuben walks into the class and to his seat perspiring, Saraphina looks at him.

"You look all messed up" she said.

"Yeah I know you don't have to tell me" said Reuben, by the way my dad wants to take us out shopping later today so I asked him if it is okay to bring you along and he said it was okay"

"Is that some sort of invitation?"

"What, not good enough for you? You should be grateful my dad accepted for you to tag along"

"Said the boy who prefer going out with me and my parents than his own"

"Hay don't make it sound that way, it's just that I my parents are hardly around so I end up spending more time at your house than at mine, and when you spend more time at someone else's house you end up going out with their family more than yours"

"Yeah, you can say that to make yourself feel better"

"So will you be coming"

"No''

"Huh, but why?"

"Because I don't want to"

"Come on Saraphina, do you know how long I had to beg my dad to allow you come along, it was supposed to be a family outing but I had to plead with my old man to make an exception"

"Oh now am getting the picture, so you literally begged for me to come, even though you don't even know if I would accept"

"You know you have a way of twisting what I said, I just asked my dad to allow you come along and then he said it's fine"

"You know you are contradicting yourself, first you pleaded with your dad to let me come along and now you are saying that you just asked him"

"Okay, okay you won, I literally begged my dad to allow you come along, are you satisfied?"

"Well I guess so''

"Look at her head, so does that mean you are coming"

"No"

"What, but you said you were satisfied"

"Don't misquote me, I said am satisfied I never said am coming"

"Come on Saraphina, what more do you want me to say" Saraphina looks at him smiling.

"Hay don't even think about it, you ain't going to make me beg"

"You want me to come or not?" Reuben was silent.

"Okay you won, Saraphina please would you escort shopping later today?"

"Now you are talking, of cause am going to come"

"I can't believe you really made me beg before accepting to come along, after pleading with my old man to allow you come, I still had to plead with you too"

"Well I never told you I wanted to come along, you were the one who went to ask your dad to allow me come along"

"Yeah I _ _ _" just then Lillian walks in.

"Oh Lilly you are back, how was it"

"Well you are right, it was fun" she said.

"I can't believe he convinced you to join a sport activity Lillian"

"Not everyone is like you Saraphina, all you do is bury your face in a book, you are pretty boring"

"Said the guy who prefers hanging out with me than hanging out with other people"

"You always have the final say, don't you?"

"It wasn't bad Saraphina really "

"I know, I just never thought that in a million years you would even consider joining a sport activity"

"Oh leave the girl alone Saraphina, not everyone must be as boring as you "

"Boring huh, then why did you insist i come along with you today "

"Hay, don't take that as an opportunity to scrutinize me "

"Scrutinize huh, please define scrutinize"

"You guys really do get along in a rocky way don't you "

"Depends what you mean by rocky way "

"By the way Lillian, I never really got to collect your number last week "

"Oh right, remind me after school session "

"What about me, am I not worthy of having your number miss Lilly?"

"You never said you wanted my number "

"I thought we were friends, if I didn't ask for your number, you won't ask for mine"

"I guess you are right, remind me after school session"

"You just have to copy whatever i do don't?"

"Are you trying to pick a querrel with me?"

"Nah I'll rather pick a querrel with my mom, at least she would show me mercy since am his son"

"At least am glad you understand that much, that's goes further to show that you aren't all dullard as i thought"

"So Ruby, what was Saraphina talking about she tagging along with you later today"

"Oh we're going on a family outing today but I asked my dad if it's okay for her to tag along and he said it was okay''

"Asked, you literally begged for my sake without even knowing if I wanted to come along or not"

"You don't have to rub it in, every opportunity you get"

"Oh i see that's must be nice" said Lillian.

"Huh, is something wrong?" Asked Saraphina.

"Don't worry it's nothing important" she said.

"So Lillian would you like to go out with me instead later today?" Asked Dennis who was listening to their discussion for quite a while.

"No thanks, not interested" said Lillian.

"Oh okay, if you say so"
