Dumbledore had once suggested to Vizette that tracing a problem back to its source might offer fresh insight. Calming himself, Vizette replayed the memories he'd glimpsed, cross-referencing them with his grasp of mental magic.
The first mental magic he'd encountered—by his own reckoning—was the Mind Palace. Aberforth Dumbledore had taught him that its foundation lay in emotions; a strong emotional core built an unyielding mental fortress. The Occlumency that extended from it demanded emotional control to fend off intrusions.
By year's end, Vizette had mastered the Obliviate spell, drawing inspiration from Lockhart on countering it. To shatter or enhance a Memory Charm, one anchored an emotion as a fulcrum, prying open the spell's hold.
Layering this with the Memory Extraction spells he'd learned recently, Vizette realized emotions and memories were intertwined. "Directly diving into those memories must have let their emotions seep into me," he concluded.
It echoed the Pensieve's principle, but his deeper soul awareness made the basin harmless—unlike his raw, unfiltered plunge into his own recollections, tainted by personal bias.
Hagrid's memory of Snape's bullying and isolation wasn't isolated; Hagrid could relate all too well. His massive build drew whispers, even if rarely voiced outright. When Hagrid spoke of his school days, he always skirted the details—hinting at buried pain.
Weighing it all, Vizette saw the resentment as Snape's, but rooted in Hagrid. Hagrid's gentle nature bottled it up, letting it fester subconsciously, etched into his memories. Those Hogwarts-born grudges—petty slights, exclusions—had coalesced, seeping into Vizette as he sifted through them.
...
With the cause clear, Vizette acted swiftly. He raised his wand to his temple, channeling mental magic to excise the emotions. But Hagrid's buried resentment clung stubbornly; ordinary spells would take ages to uproot.
Vizette tapped his Obscurus, surging Ancient Magic through it to accelerate the purge. It worked better, but still dragged.
Impatient, he invoked time-tempered Ancient Magic—a refined force. If basic extraction was yanking a nail barehanded, the Obscurus method was a crowbar; this was a precision tool, locking on and ripping free in moments.
His wand tip bloomed with a hazy, dark-orange orb—light and mist intertwined, ethereal and potent.
Suddenly, the Wizard's Handbook in his mind flipped open. The Ancient Magic he'd gathered lately surged into it, the orb shrinking and merging with The Standard Book of Spells.
Like the prior unlock of Ancient Magic: Self-Shaping (Devil's Snare), it flooded him with emotional-rooted insights, sharpening his mental magic prowess.
Snapping back, Vizette spotted new entries in the blank pages of Hogwarts: A History:
Ancient Magic: Bombarda—Channels Ancient Magic into an explosive blast, amplifying force and igniting persistent flames on impact.
Ancient Magic: Bombarda Maxima—Channels Ancient Magic into a massive explosive surge, redoubling power and triggering a secondary detonation on contact.
Pure offensive spells, both. The first scorched foes with lingering fire; the second's chain reaction promised devastating surprises.
"Stripping those emotions... it feels like a weight lifted," Vizette exhaled, relief washing over him.
He glanced at the headmaster's door and knocked. "Professor Dumbledore, sorry to disturb you so late. May I come in?"
Silence greeted him.
Now steady, Vizette mentally recapped the day. It had been eventful: advancing his Animagus training, gleaning Hogwarts lore from Hagrid, uncovering Snape's youth.
Those glimpses explained Snape's point-deducting zeal, especially against Gryffindor. Compared to his era, Hogwarts now felt almost welcoming.
Vizette had profited too. Sealing Hagrid's memories highlighted memory risks, honing his mental defenses. Purging the resentment yielded two ancient blasts and emotional magic theory.
He checked the door once more, stretched, and murmured, "It's late anyway. Time to head back and crash."
"Tomorrow: early Animagus drills, plus sorting these emotion-magic links. Could refine Obliviate... or bolster my Occlumency."
En route to Ravenclaw Tower, he jotted his next pursuit: blending emotions with mental magic, probing their interplay.
