Chapter 33 - [33] Snape's Reluctant Praise and the Spell of History

When the bell rang, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief and crowded around Vizette, wanting to say something.

"Do you want to stay here and clean the classroom?" a cold voice rang out. Snape lowered his eyelids and spoke slowly.

Like startled birds, everyone quickly packed up their textbooks and shoved each other out of the classroom.

Snape abruptly said, "Vizette, you stay here and clean up."

Michael and the others wore expressions of "good luck to them" as they waved and left the classroom.

Hannah asked timidly, her face already flushed, "Can I stay here too?"

"Ha!" Snape sneered, offering no direct response.

Vizette waved his hand, "Actually, there's not much to clean. I can manage by myself."

"If it weren't for you, I definitely wouldn't have been able to finish the potion." Hannah didn't explain much, and rolled up her sleeves to start wiping the table.

"Thank you!" Vizette said softly, picking up the broom and dustpan from the corner and sweeping away the snake tooth debris and dried nettles on the ground.

Dol...dol...dol...

The sound of the stone pounding against the snake's teeth echoed in the classroom as Snape, oblivious to his surroundings, processed the materials, preparing to brew a potion to treat boils.

The cleaning was completed quickly, and Vizette stood in front of the podium, carefully observing Snape's potion-making process.

Snape's movements were steady, without a single unnecessary motion. After just ten crushing blows, all the snake fangs were reduced to an incredibly fine powder.

When dealing with slugs, he didn't use tweezers, but instead pinched the slugs with his fingers and put them into the steamer.

The entire potion-making process was smooth and efficient. Snape, with his skill and audacity, used a powerful fire to shorten the potion's brewing time.

In just ten minutes, the pure pink smoke bloomed like flowers, announcing the successful completion of the potion.

Snape looked up at Vizette and asked in an icy tone, "What did you see?"

After a moment's thought, Vizette said loudly, "Your familiarity with potion ingredients! Whether it's handling snake fangs or dried nettles, it's all done with perfect precision."

"The same applies to steaming and boiling slugs. You can judge the quality of the material by kneading the slugs with your hands, so you can get the best quality slugs without opening the lid."

"You scrape off the impurities from the porcupine quills with a scraper before adding them, making the potion flawless. This is the part that has benefited me the most."

"Not bad, it seems you're not stupid." Snape said softly, his tone unreadable. "Talent can raise the bar, but Potions is no simple subject."

"Experience is just as important as talent. Being able to judge the quality of materials based on experience will allow you to go further on your potion-making journey... Ravenclaw, five points. You can go back now."

Hannah looked incredulous and even covered her mouth.

"Thank you, Professor Snape. We'll be taking our leave now." Vizette looked at Snape, and he seemed to see a hint of appreciation in Snape's eyes.

But this fleeting moment of appreciation was short-lived, making him think he might have been mistaken.

...

Arriving at the Great Hall entrance, Hannah was still a little dizzy. "This is the first time I've ever known that Professor Snape could talk so much, and he even gave you five points! Five points!"

"Isn't that so?" Vizette asked. "I remember Cho Chang telling me that every professor has the power to add or deduct points."

"Professor Snape is different…" Hannah glanced back before lowering her voice to explain, "Professor Snape only adds points to Slytherin and deducts points from the other three houses."

"Is that so?" Vizette smiled slightly. "Looks like I'm quite lucky."

...

After a morning of potions lessons, Vizette gained a lot of goodwill among the new Hufflepuff students.

When he passed the Hufflepuff table, the freshmen would smile at him.

Madam Pomfrey's medical advice proved effective; after a midday of meditation, he appeared in the History of Magic classroom, full of energy.

This classroom was located on the second floor of the castle. The classroom was well-organized, well-ventilated, and had excellent natural light.

In the afternoon, the bright sunlight streamed into the classroom, creating a peaceful and warm atmosphere.

As Hogwarts' only ghost professor, Professor Binns's way of entering the classroom was particularly unique.

Just then, the class bell rang, and Professor Binns appeared through the wall, floating to the podium.

"It's time to start class!"

He did not call roll, and the students in front of him did not even glance at him. He then began to teach in a dull, monotonous voice.

"There was a period of stability and prosperity for wizards and Muggles... Wizards lived in Muggle villages, exchanging potions and healing magic for necessities..."

"The evil Emeric rose up in southern England, where he ruled with terror... The appearance of this dark wizard was the spark that ignited the Muggle 'witch hunt'..."

"The relationship between wizards and Muggles has broken down, and wizards have begun to distance themselves from Muggle villages... Although Muggles cannot defeat adult wizards, they can prey on young wizard children..."

The bright, warm sunshine, coupled with the drawn-out, melodious voice, made it the perfect time to catch up on sleep.

Around Vizette, his roommates, who had intended to take serious notes, couldn't resist Professor Binns's voice and started dozing off like chickens pecking at rice.

Before they knew it, only two sounds remained in the classroom—Professor Binns's lecture and the rustling of Vizette taking notes.

The book "History of Magic" was so thick that even after Vizette copied the entire book, he still couldn't fully remember all of it.

Professor Binns did not simply read from the textbook when he taught; instead, he would succinctly summarize the content, which greatly benefited Vizette.

Unfortunately, this content was hidden in the drawn-out, rambling tone, requiring the patience of a gold prospector to discover the shining golden words within.

Professor Binns continued his lecture, "Some wizards, because their children have been murdered, have gradually gone to extremes, using the torture and killing of Muggles as a means of revenge..."

"The emergence of these dark wizards exacerbated Muggles' fear of wizards, and the 'witch hunts' intensified, leading to the tragic murder of more wizarding children..."

"Wizards developed methods specifically targeting Muggles, such as Muggle-repelling charms and Muggle-proof doorknobs. The emergence of these methods further reduced communication between wizards and Muggles..."

As the saying goes, "History is a mirror; it shows the rise and fall of dynasties."

Through Professor Binns's lectures, Vizette gradually learned why wizards isolate themselves, thus creating a "magical world."

Wizards are beings born with the ability to cast spells, and their way of thinking is very different from that of Muggles.

For wizards, when they encounter trouble in life, the first thing they do is use magic to solve the problem. This is also the reason why Muggle-repelling charms and Muggle-proof doorknobs appear.

However, they all lead to the same goal: Muggles create various tools for production, and wizards invent various kinds of magic to deal with troubles.

Thinking about it this way, Vizette appreciated the allure of the history of magic even more.

When the bell rang, the roommates woke up one after another and wiped the drool from their mouths.

Terry rubbed his eyes and asked in a daze, "Um... Vizette, why do you look so energetic?"

"I'm taking notes," Vizette said, still savoring the moment. "The history of magic class is so much fun!"

Michael opened his mouth, patted his face, and said, "Maybe this is the real Ravenclaw... even in History of Magic class, he's so diligent!"

Vizette smiled noncommittally and turned his gaze to the scenery outside the window.

He suddenly realized that writing letters wasn't so difficult after all, and there were so many interesting things to say.
