Chapter 5 - Erased Data

Andrew noticed it first.

Not in a dramatic way.

Just… a feeling.

Like being looked at when no one should be looking.

He was restocking files at the nurse station when he felt it again—that faint prickle at the back of his neck. He glanced up.

The security desk.

One of the guards was watching him.

Not casually. Not briefly.

Watching.

Andrew looked away, forcing himself to stay calm. He'd learned long ago that reacting too fast only drew more attention.

"Andy?" Mia's voice broke through his thoughts.

He turned. She was holding a patient chart, her brows furrowed slightly. "Did you update Room 214's file? The note you added—it's not in the system anymore."

His jaw tightened. "I saved it."

"I know you did," she said softly. "That's why I'm asking."

They stood there, the noise of the hospital flowing around them like a river, while something silent passed between them.

"I'll check again later," Andrew said. "Maybe it's a system glitch."

Mia didn't look convinced. Neither was he.

They walked down the corridor together, their steps unconsciously matching. Near the elevator, a doctor Andrew didn't recognize brushed past them—harder than necessary.

"Watch it," Andrew muttered.

The man didn't turn back.

Mia slowed. "Do you know him?"

Andrew shook his head. "No. But he knew me."

That made her stomach twist.

By midday, Andrew had been reassigned.

Not officially.

Not with paperwork.

Just a quiet request.

"You'll cover the east wing today," the supervisor said, not meeting his eyes.

"We're short-staffed."

The east wing was nowhere near Mia.

Andrew nodded anyway.

Later, Mia found him near the vending machines, staring at nothing.

"You okay?" she asked.

"They moved me," he said simply.

Her heart dropped. "Because of yesterday?"

"They didn't say." He met her gaze. "But they noticed."

Mia hesitated, then did something she hadn't planned.

She reached out and squeezed his hand.

Just once.

Quick.

Grounding.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"Don't be," he replied quietly. "If anything… it means we weren't wrong."

They pulled away as footsteps approached.

A nurse passed them, smiling too politely.

That night, Mia couldn't sleep.

She kept seeing the way the security guard's eyes had followed Andrew. The missing file. The reassignment that didn't make sense.

The next morning, she arrived early—earlier than usual.

The nurse station was empty.

She logged into the system and searched for Room 214.

Nothing.

No notes.

No reports.

No patient history.

Like the woman had never existed.

Mia's breath caught.

She logged out immediately, her pulse racing.

As she turned, she froze.

Andrew was standing in the doorway.

"How long have you been here?" she asked.

"Long enough to see your face change," he said.

She swallowed. "They erased a patient."

Andrew's expression hardened—not with fear, but with resolve.

"Then it's not just watching anymore," he said. "It's cleaning."

They stood there, the truth heavy between them—still incomplete, still unproven, but undeniable in its presence.

Somewhere above them, a camera blinked red.

Watching.
