They left the City of Radiance before dawn.
Not as fugitives.
Not as heroes.
But as witnesses to a broken belief.
Smoke still rose behind them as Akari's army secured the streets. Priests were disarmed. Survivors were given food instead of scripture. The High Preacher was dragged away in chains, screaming prayers that no longer reached anyone.
Hiroto walked at the front of the group, cloak torn, shadow faint but steady at his heels.
Yui stayed close to him.
"You don't look back anymore," she said quietly.
"I can't," Hiroto replied.
"If I do, I'll start counting the dead."
Goro limped behind them, bandaged from shoulder to waist.
"So where exactly are we going, Your Ladyship?"
Akari rode beside them on a dark warhorse.
"To a place that was erased from maps," she said.
"The Broken Lands. Where divine influence weakens."
Yui frowned. "Why there?"
Akari's gaze hardened.
"Because the gods don't like what survives there."
As they reached the outer gates, a scout rode in at full speed.
"Lady Akari! Divine Path forces have sealed three cities and begun purges!"
Silence fell.
Yui's breath caught.
"They're… retaliating."
Akari closed her eyes briefly.
"Of course they are."
Hiroto stopped walking.
"…They're killing people because of me."
Akari looked down at him.
"No," she said firmly.
"They're killing people because they were always willing to."
She leaned forward in her saddle.
"This war didn't start because you fought them.
It started because they feared you could."
Hiroto clenched his fists.
Then something shifted.
His shadow moved without command, stretching toward the horizon.
"…Then I won't let them fight in the dark anymore."
Akari raised an eyebrow.
"What are you planning?"
Hiroto turned toward the city walls.
"I will let them see me."
Yui's eyes widened. "Hiroto, don't…."
He stepped onto a fallen statue base and let his shadow rise behind him like a banner.
The air thickened.
Across the ruined streets, people froze.
From towers and rooftops, soldiers stared.
Hiroto spoke not loud.
But the shadow carried his voice.
"To anyone who still believes because they're afraid—
I am not your enemy.
To anyone who kills in the name of gods—
I am."
The shadow flared once.
Then faded.
Akari watched him with something like respect.
"…You just declared war publicly."
Hiroto stepped down.
"Good."
Goro whistled weakly.
"Subtle as always."
Akari turned her horse eastward.
"Then we move faster," she said.
"If the gods want you dead… we make you stronger."
As they crossed into the outer plains, the land itself began to change.
Grass turned gray.
Stone warped.
The sky felt heavier.
The Broken Lands waited.
And somewhere far above—
A throne of light shifted.
A voice whispered through divine halls:
"The shadow has spoken."
Another replied:
"Then the game begins."
And for the first time in centuries…
The gods prepared to move.
To be continued.
