Chapter 83 - War of Faith: Part 13

The crown of darkness hovered above Hiroto's head like a broken halo.

Not solid.

Not light.

Not shadow.

Something between will and rage.

The High Preacher took a step back for the first time.

"…So the rumors were true," he murmured. "The shadow does not merely consume. It chooses."

The altar behind him pulsed violently, pouring more faith into his body. His form burned gold, veins of scripture crawling across his arms and neck.

"Then I will drown your choice in belief."

He slammed his staff into the ground.

The altar screamed.

Light exploded outward like a tide.

Buildings folded. Windows shattered. The plaza was ripped apart as if a god had struck the earth with a hammer.

Akari was thrown backward, smashing into a stone pillar.

Goro was buried under debris.

Yui was blown off her feet, skidding across broken ground.

"Hiroto!" she screamed.

Hiroto stood alone in the center of the blast.

The shadow wrapped around him instinctively.

But it wasn't enough.

His knees buckled.

Blood ran from his nose.

…Too much…

The whisper inside him twisted.

…Then stop holding back…

The crown of darkness cracked.

And from it, Chains formed.

Not of light.

Not of shadow.

Chains made of pure will.

They wrapped around Hiroto's arms and chest, sinking into his skin without pain.

He gasped.

The shadow did not grow larger.

It grew denser.

The ground beneath him collapsed inward as if gravity itself bent toward him.

Akari forced herself to her feet.

Her spear shook in her grip.

"Hiroto… if you keep using that power…"

"I know," he said quietly.

His eyes were no longer just dark.

They reflected nothing.

"I won't survive it."

The High Preacher raised his staff again.

"Then die as a martyr."

He unleashed a beam of pure belief.

Akari moved.

Not toward safety.

Toward Hiroto.

She stepped in front of him.

The beam struck her spear.

The impact was blinding.

The sound was not an explosion.

It was a crack, like the sky itself breaking.

Akari screamed as the spear shattered halfway up its shaft. Blood sprayed across the stone.

She was thrown backward, crashing into Hiroto.

He caught her.

Her armor was broken.

Her shoulder burned where the light had struck.

She coughed. "…You don't get to die yet."

Hiroto felt something tear inside his chest.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"You idiot…" he whispered.

The High Preacher stared. "So even kings bleed."

Akari forced herself upright. "I am not a king."

She looked at Hiroto.

"I am your shield."

Hiroto closed his eyes.

The chains around his body tightened.

The shadow surged upward like a storm.

The crown shattered completely.

And from it a form emerged.

Not wings.

Not armor.

A throne of shadow behind him.

The ground knelt.

The light hesitated.

Even the altar flickered.

The High Preacher staggered back.

"…A sovereign shadow…"

Hiroto stepped forward.

Each step crushed scripture underfoot.

"Faith that kills," he said, voice echoing unnaturally,

"is just another prison."

He raised his hand.

The chains of will shot forward and wrapped around the altar.

Not breaking it.

Binding it.

The flow of belief stopped.

The city went quiet.

The High Preacher screamed as the light tore out of his body. He collapsed to his knees, coughing blood and gold.

"No… they need me…"

Hiroto stood over him.

"They needed truth."

The shadow receded slightly.

Hiroto swayed.

Akari grabbed him before he fell.

Yui ran to them, tears streaming. "Hiroto!"

The altar cracked.

Not from force.

From absence.

Faith without control collapsed into silence.

The High Preacher lay shaking.

The city still burned.

But the god-machine was dead.

Akari leaned close to Hiroto's ear.

"…You scared me."

He smiled weakly.

"…Good."

Far above them, In the clouds the broken circle symbol reappeared.

Watching.

Learning.

Adapting.

The War of Faith had just shown its true face.

And it was only beginning.

To be continued…
