Chapter 70 - The World After Gods

The Iron King was gone.

Not dead.

Not crowned.

Not worshiped.

Just bound in iron and seated on the ground like any other defeated man.

The battlefield was quiet.

Too quiet.

No cheers.

No songs.

No victory cries.

Only wind moving across broken weapons and blood-soaked earth.

Hiroto stood in the center of it all, sword planted in the dirt.

He had won.

And it felt like nothing.

Takeshi did not look like a king anymore.

His armor was cracked.

His hair was loose.

His hands trembled.

"You proved nothing," Takeshi muttered. "Another tyrant will rise."

Hiroto looked at him.

"No," he said. "You proved something for us."

"What?"

"That humans don't need a god to fight… but they still want one."

Takeshi laughed bitterly.

"You'll learn."

Smoke climbed into the sky like dark prayers.

Yui sat beside Hiroto, cleaning her blade.

"We survived," she said.

"For now," Masanori replied.

Hiroto watched the horizon.

Something felt wrong.

Not danger.

Not fear.

Expectation.

Like the world was holding its breath.

A lone figure approached from the southern road.

Not wounded.

Not tired.

Not afraid.

He wore white robes.

A silver crown symbol was stitched onto his chest.

The soldiers raised their weapons.

Hiroto raised his hand. "Let him speak."

The man bowed.

"The Divine Path thanks you for removing the Iron King."

Silence.

Hiroto stepped forward. "Who are you?"

"A servant," the man replied. "Of the coming god."

Yui stiffened. "There is no god."

The man smiled.

"There will be."

The messenger spoke calmly:

"We have united twelve cities."

"We have crushed six rebellions."

"We have built temples where the System once ruled."

Murmurs spread.

"Our doctrine is simple," he continued.

Freedom creates war.

Order creates peace.

Peace requires divinity.

Hiroto clenched his fist.

"And who will be this god?" he asked.

The messenger's eyes lifted to Hiroto.

"You."

The battlefield froze.

"I refuse," Hiroto said instantly.

The man bowed deeper.

"You don't understand. We don't need your consent."

Arrows flew.

Not from Takeshi's men.

From behind Hiroto's lines.

Masked figures erupted from the hills.

White banners rose.

THE DIVINE PATH.

They didn't charge.

They walked.

Like priests.

Like executioners.

"Protect the civilians!" Masanori shouted.

Steel clashed.

The Divine Path fighters moved differently.

Not disciplined like Takeshi's army.

Not chaotic like militias.

They fought like believers.

Fearless.

Silent.

Unstoppable.

Yui stood beside Hiroto.

"We can't fight all of them," she said.

"I know."

She grabbed his arm.

"If you use the shadow…"

"No," Hiroto snapped.

She met his eyes.

"If you don't… they will turn you into a god anyway."

An explosion of fire tore through the rear lines.

Screams followed.

Hiroto felt the shadow stir violently.

Not whispering.

Demanding.

Masanori planted his spear.

"I'll hold them."

Hiroto turned. "You can't."

"I can delay them."

Masanori smiled.

"I was born in the age of gods," he said.

"Let me die in the age of humans."

He charged.

A wall of white blades met him.

Hiroto screamed.

The world slowed.

Not by Hiroto's will.

By the shadow's.

Everything froze.

Blood hung in the air.

Flames paused.

Screams became statues.

The shadow stood before him.

Not behind.

Not beside.

It had shape now.

A broken crown.

A hollow body.

I AM NOT POWER.

I AM VACANCY.

Hiroto trembled.

"You're… the absence of a god?"

WHEN GODS DIE, SOMETHING MUST FILL THE SPACE.

THAT SOMETHING IS ME.

"So you want me to rule?"

I WANT YOU TO REFUSE.

BUT THEY WILL NOT.

Hiroto felt tears burn his eyes.

Time resumed.

Masanori fell.

Yui screamed.

The Divine Path closed in.

Hiroto stepped forward.

Not with power.

With voice.

"STOP!"

They didn't.

So he did the one thing the shadow could never do.

He knelt.

Not in worship.

In surrender.

"I am not your god," Hiroto shouted.

"And I will never be!"

The Divine Path hesitated.

Just for a second.

That was enough.

Yui pulled him back.

Smoke bombs exploded.

They ran.

When the fighting ended…

The Divine Path was gone.

Masanori was dead.

The Iron King had vanished.

Taken.

The battlefield was empty.

Except for the survivors.

Yui collapsed beside Hiroto.

"You didn't become it," she whispered.

"But they will try again," Hiroto replied.

News spread fast:

A new religion had risen.

A man who refused godhood was now hunted as one.

The System was truly gone.

Nations began forming.

Faith became a weapon.

Hiroto became a symbol he never wanted.

On a mountain overlooking burning cities…

Hiroto stood with Yui.

Below them:

A banner rose over the southern capital.

A white crown over a black shadow.

THE DIVINE PATH

Hiroto clenched his fists.

"This is only the beginning," Yui said.

He nodded.

"The gods are gone."

"And now," he whispered…

"…we fight the people who want them back."
