Experimentally, when Evan turned and walked away, the "ancient battlefield" cavern filled with goblin corpses and weapons—along with the fog gate at the end—slowly disappeared.
The passage to Floor 5 reappeared.
Anya even ran over and back, and nothing happened. Clearly, this "gatekeeping boss" was aimed specifically at Evan's existence.
So hateful.
Honestly, Evan felt the Dungeon hated him way too much.
"Let's go. We're heading back to Floor 2," Evan said.
That was his plan.
Clearly, Floors 2 through 4 were probably treated as one "overall region" by the Dungeon. If there was a fog gate here and another on Floor 3, then Floor 2 couldn't possibly have nothing, right?
So Evan decided to go back and fully explore Floor 2 first.
The three of them retraced their path—and sure enough, going back was the correct call, because…
…
Dungeon maze.
At the end of Corridor B4 in Area C of Floor 2, as marked on the Guild's map—
In a small cavern chamber, two treasure chests sat quietly.
Evan, Anya, and Lefiya all fell silent.
In the dim cavern, faint phosphorescence drifted. It was terrifyingly quiet—there wasn't even the sound of monsters.
But the quieter it was, the more abnormal it felt.
Everyone knew:
If you suddenly saw a treasure chest in a maze corner, you could never just run up and open it, because—
"A mimic, meow!"
Even the dumbest Anya could tell!!
"Eh? Do monsters like that really exist?" Lefiya asked.
"No, meow!" Anya declared, arms crossed, righteous as ever.
She was telling the truth. In all her years as an adventurer, she'd never seen or even heard of any so-called "mimic." Those only existed in storybooks, meow!
There were no treasure chests in the Dungeon!!
There were extremely valuable rare items and materials, sure. Like the ultra-rare monster "Jack Bird"—also called the "Golden Chicken"—that could appear on Floor 1. Its drop, "Jack Bird's Golden Egg," was worth a million valis!
And rare monsters like the infant dragon on the upper floors—nicknamed the "Upper-Floor Dungeon King"—were also highly valuable. And in the great tree labyrinth area on Floor 24, there were pearl trees guarded by the powerful "Tree Dragon," and so on…
As a veteran adventurer, Anya was confident she wasn't mistaken!
In the Dungeon, it was impossible for something this obviously fancy—something that clearly looked like it was stuffed with loot—to appear!
So—
"It's definitely a mimic, meow!"
Both Anya and Lefiya had read those fairy tales: in ancient hero legends, there were monsters in labyrinths that looked like treasure… but once you got close, they opened a huge mouth and swallowed you whole.
Evan agreed too.
But now there was a problem.
Was the left chest the mimic? Or the right chest?
The two chests were identical in appearance—no doubt the Dungeon's deliberate trick. There was no way to tell the difference with the naked eye!
"I think it's the right one, meow~" Anya said.
"Could be the left…" Lefiya said uncertainly, then looked at Evan.
Evan said nothing.
Silently, he took out the hand crossbow strapped to his thigh and fired a bolt at the left chest.
Whoosh!
The small crossbow bolts were poisoned. After a strange deep-purple flash, the bolt struck—
And the chest that had been sitting quietly on the right suddenly jumped up.
It literally jumped.
Because Anya and Lefiya both saw it sprout long legs—along with long arms!
Those gray-white limbs were absurdly thin, yet extremely long—possibly over two meters!
It was unbelievably weird!
The two girls rubbed their eyes—only to see the long-limbed mimic already sprinting toward them.
Still unbelievably weird!!
Evan, however, had already drawn his long blade and charged straight at the monster.
Smack!
The mimic's whipping kick was lightning-fast, slamming into the cavern wall and blasting out a deep crater.
Luckily, Evan seemed used to fighting high-speed monsters.
He dodged instantly, then struck—drawing a small spray of blood from the mimic's pale, long arm.
So hard!
He hadn't even cut it off.
But quickly, Evan figured out the trick to dealing with this mimic.
It didn't use its hands!
It only used its feet to kick left and right.
In that case, since it couldn't kick with both legs at once, all he had to do was:
When it raised its right leg, circle left.
When it raised its left leg, circle right.
And he could kill it without taking a hit.
Once he mastered the key timing, Evan finished the fight without even needing Lefiya's magic support.
After it died, its long arms and legs turned to ash and vanished, returning it to a normal-looking chest that dropped heavily to the ground.
Thud!
So there really was loot?
Evan walked over and poked it a few times with his weapon. Only after confirming it really had become an ordinary chest did he open it—and saw what was inside…
…
"Let me open it, meow! I have lucky hands, meow!!"
You even know "lucky hands," you stupid cat?
Evan turned his head—only to see Anya, in an instant, already rushing to the other chest like a thief ringing a bell at lightning speed.
If one was a mimic, then the remaining one must be the real treasure chest, meow!
Watch me pull out an amazing super treasure, meow!!
However—
"Awooo!"
Just as Anya was about to open it, the chest—quiet until now—opened its "big mouth" and swallowed the cat-girl whole!!
"Meow?! What's going on?! It's so dark, so dark, meow!! Help meow help meow help meow!!"
Evan and Lefiya both stared in shock.
It couldn't chew.
The mimic couldn't chew Anya at all—it couldn't even break her defense.
What a terrifying body… A Level 4 adventurer was really that absurd?!
A great opportunity…
No—save the person first!
Watching Anya's short little legs flailing wildly in the air (the idiot cat-girl was only 150 cm tall, tragic), Evan and Lefiya didn't care what loot the chest might have had. They rushed over and took down the second mimic!
And so, another "hard-fought battle"…
…
After rescuing Anya, Evan finally took the items out from the two chests.
One was a broken jigsaw piece—something that looked like a quest item.
The other was a staff.
Evan picked up the staff and immediately used his magic [Perfect Mastery] to read the "combat art" embedded in the weapon—and very quickly realized—
"Holy crap… a wheelchair!"
