ARIA'S POV — TWO DAYS BEFORE DISCHARGE
The nightmare was always the same.
She was back in the hospital room but nobody could see her. Damien was there, Alexander was there, her mother was there, the doctors were moving around doing things with urgent efficiency — but she was standing in the corner watching all of it and nobody turned around. Nobody heard her. She was calling their names and producing no sound and the monitors were screaming and she couldn't reach the bed and.....
She woke up with her hand pressed flat against her own chest, feeling her heart slamming against her palm like it was trying to get out.
3:17 AM.
Damien was asleep in the chair, his head tilted to one side, one arm resting on the edge of her bed. He'd fallen asleep holding her hand and at some point in the night she'd pulled away without waking him....she did that sometimes, needing to not be touched for a while, needing the small boundary of her own body.
