Chapter 117 - Chapter 117: haunting

In a secret location in Texas, the air was thick with silence as Su Yiren sat facing the window, her gaze lost in the distant horizon. It had been months since she was taken from her world, a world that had effectively erased her existence. To them, she was dead, a ghost haunting the memories of the living.

The plot she had devised with Bai Lanyue to frame Bai Zhiqi had unraveled into a nightmare she couldn't escape. The weight of her actions pressed heavily on her chest, a constant reminder of her betrayal. She sighed deeply, feeling the emptiness within her grow as a nurse entered the room, pushing a cart with IV fluids.

"More of this?" Su Yiren muttered under her breath, her spirit crushed. She had long healed from her physical wounds, yet the IV drips kept flowing, as if mocking her fragility. She felt useless and broken, a mere shell of the person she once was.

"Su Yiren, you want to change your situation? I laugh," her inner voice taunted, echoing through her mind like a cruel specter. Isolation had become her prison; no one spoke to her here. She was a captive of her own making, trapped because she had sided with Bai Lanyue. The identity of her captor remained a mystery—was it Bai Heng, Ji Yanluo, or perhaps even Bai Zhiqi herself?

The nurse set the IV fluids on the stand, her face devoid of emotion, and left the room, shutting the door behind her with a quiet click. Soon, exhaustion overtook Su Yiren, and she succumbed to sleep, her mind swirling with dark thoughts.

In the depths of her slumber, a voice pierced the darkness. "Su Yiren."

She opened her eyes to find herself enveloped in shadows, and the only figure that emerged from the void was Bai Zhiqi, clad in the wine-colored gown she had worn five years ago—a haunting reminder of their shared past.

"Zhiqi," she gasped, her heart racing.

"Why?" Bai Zhiqi's voice was a chilling whisper as she moved closer, her expression a mix of sorrow and fury.

"Why did you lie?" Zhiqi's eyes bore into her, filled with a rage that sent ice through Su Yiren's veins.

Before she could respond, Bai Zhiqi reached for her neck, her grip tightening like a vice. Panic surged through Su Yiren as she clawed at the air, desperate for something to hold onto, but the darkness blurred her vision, leaving her gasping for breath.

"Gasp…"

Su Yiren shot up in her bed, drenched in cold sweat, the remnants of her nightmare clinging to her. The door creaked open, and she braced herself, having grown accustomed to the routine.

"Bai Lanyue is throwing a birthday banquet for Bai Zhiqi, as I told you," a shadowed figure announced, stepping into the dim light of the room. "You will make an appearance on Sunday. Failure to do so will ruin your life and your remaining future."

"Sunday?" Su Yiren echoed, her voice trembling. "Am I supposed to keep lying, or should I finally speak the truth?" A single tear slipped down her cheek, mixing with the dread pooling in her stomach.

The figure leaned closer, their expression obscured by the shadows. "You will play your part, or you will face the consequences. The choice is yours."

With that, the figure turned and left, leaving Su Yiren alone in the suffocating darkness. She felt the weight of despair pressing down on her, the walls of her prison closing in.

As the door clicked shut, she whispered to the emptiness, "What choice do I even have?"

The truth was a double-edged sword, and she was caught in a web of lies that seemed impossible to escape. The darkness around her mirrored the turmoil inside, a constant reminder of the betrayal she had sown and the price she had yet to pay.

In the days leading up to the banquet, a storm was brewing, and Su Yiren knew she would have to confront the demons of her past—whether she liked it or not. The shadows whispered of revenge, and she felt their call, a dark promise that could either save her or seal her fate.
