Chapter 34 - Chapter 34

Isn't this a bit wrong?

That question briefly crossed Jun's mind as he walked home that night, the cold wind brushing against his thin jacket. Interacting too closely with people who—when viewed from a story's perspective—clearly fell into the category of main heroines. Normally, that was a danger sign. A red flag. A shortcut straight into narrative chaos.

But after thinking it over again, Jun only shrugged.

Well, whatever. It didn't really matter.

He wasn't the type whose life was dictated by paranoia. As long as he didn't step too far and kept his distance from the vortex of trouble, everything was still manageable. Besides, what he did after getting home didn't sound anything like the life of a main character busy conquering the world.

Jun prepared a simple dinner—rice, modest side dishes, and instant soup that he tweaked a little so it felt more "intentional." After that, he trained. Again. And again. Until his muscles felt heavy and his breathing grew uneven.

When his body finally gave in, he took a quick shower, dropped onto the bed, and fell asleep without dreams.

A boring routine.

However, the next day, his mindset was already slightly different.

Today, he would accompany Akeno.

Well—accompany. Even though the word sounded light, Jun was fully aware that from any perspective, this could already be categorized as a date. At the very least, a calm version of one. They had agreed to meet at noon, which meant the morning still belonged entirely to Jun.

And that morning, he had another plan.

Sunlight had just begun to slip through the trees when Jun stood in a wide field hidden from public view. The place was quiet—only wind, earth, and… a small slime lounging casually near his feet.

Maw.

Still in its tiny slime form, its color soft, with no striking change in size. Yet Jun knew—his instincts told him—that something had changed within that little entity during its three days of evolution.

He crossed his arms, staring at Maw seriously.

I think it's manifested a new power… let's try it.

"All right, Maw," Jun said as he lowered his stance slightly, his tone relaxed but focused. "You're my sparring partner now. Okay?"

"Maw~"

The sound came out cheerful—not a meow, nor some strange slime noise. It was more like a small cat too lazy to meow properly.

Jun let out a soft sigh, a faint smile appearing at the corner of his lips.

"For some reason, you're getting weirder."

He lifted Maw and placed it on the opposite side of the field, giving them several meters of distance. Maw didn't protest, only wobbling gently as if adjusting its position, its slime body rippling softly like the surface of water.

Jun stepped back.

His posture changed.

His back straightened, his breathing steadied, and the aura around him gradually tightened. The Heavenly Demon technique began to activate—not explosively, not excessively. He restrained it at a low level, just enough for testing.

The ground beneath his feet creaked softly.

"Don't worry," he muttered. "This is just a test."

Maw wobbled again.

"Maw~"

The quiet field had now truly turned into a small arena—no spectators, no cheers, only the morning wind and two entities facing each other in a way that was… not entirely normal.

Jun stood with one foot slightly forward, his body leaning lightly. The air around him began to tremble as his Demonic Qi gathered. Streams of dark purplish energy crawled from the center of his body, converging in his right arm, swirling like a small, controlled vortex.

His palm opened.

He released a short breath.

Demon Palm.

Not the full version. Just a test push—strong enough to topple a large rock, but far from lethal. His palm thrust forward, and a wave of Demonic Qi shot straight ahead, tearing through the air with a soft whoom.

The attack struck Maw.

Or… at least, it should have.

The slime—now slightly larger than before—rippled as the energy approached. Its surface shimmered strangely, like a watery mirror touched by light. Then, just before the Demon Palm reached its core—

The energy trembled.

Spun.

And… reversed direction.

The Qi that should have been discharged forward was instead pulled, twisted, and reflected back along an inverted trajectory. The wave of energy shot back toward Jun, its shape unchanged, but its flow felt unfamiliar—not his, yet not entirely Maw's either.

"Huh?"

Jun reflexively jumped backward, his feet slamming into the ground and leaving small cracks behind. The energy wave struck the spot where he had been standing moments earlier, creating a light explosion and sending dust flying.

He landed steadily, eyes wide.

"…Just now," he murmured, staring at Maw with an expression half confused, half wary. "That was… reflected?"

Maw wiggled happily, its body reflecting soft light like the surface of calm water.

"Maw~"

The tone sounded proud. Very proud.

Jun rubbed his chin, beginning to understand what had just happened. He glanced around briefly to make sure no one else was nearby, then focused his gaze back on the slime.

"So this is your new power…" he said softly. "Reverse."

Not merely blocking attacks. Not absorbing them completely either. Maw did something far more troublesome—it reversed the flow of energy itself. The energy was received, briefly unraveled within its slime body, then reflected back in the opposite direction with nearly intact momentum. The purer and more stable the incoming Qi, the more perfect the reflection.

Jun stared at the slime in front of him with an expression difficult to describe.

Then he let out a short chuckle, brief but clearly mixed with awe and caution.

"Seriously…" he muttered, scratching his cheek. "Your power is this broken!?"

Maw responded with a light wobble, its body reflecting a thin sheen of light like a puddle touched by sunlight. It didn't look dangerous at all—and that was exactly what made Jun even more wary.

Jun took a deep breath.

If this ability worked on his Demonic Qi… then in theory, it could also work on other energies. Magic, holy aura, even high-level demonic power. Not swallowed, not negated—just sent back raw to the sender.

"That's dangerous," he said quietly, more to himself. "Not just for enemies… but for me too if I'm careless."

He looked at Maw again, this time more seriously.

Rias Gremory and Akeno Himejima—two high-class devils from noble clans—briefly surfaced in his mind. If one day Maw reacted automatically to an attack like that… the consequences could be truly chaotic. Not just a small explosion in an empty field like now.

Jun slowly shook his head, then gave a crooked smile.

"But…" he said as he loosened his shoulders slightly and stepped back several meters, "this is still just a small test."

Curiosity began to outweigh caution.

Jun raised his hand once more, Qi slowly gathering—this time denser, more controlled.

"Don't worry," he said to Maw, his tone casual as if inviting it to a normal training session. "I won't overdo it."

Maw made a small sound that sounded like agreement.

"Maw~"

In that still-silent field, one thing became clear: the next test would no longer be just casual practice—but an experiment that could determine just how dangerous that small partner truly was.
