"I felt it the moment I walked in. Something was wrong. And when I turned on the lights, they—they were just standing there." She whispers, and my jaw clenches.
I glance down the street again, every sense sharpening, as I catalogue exits, blind spots, and potential threats.
Jude clears his throat beside me, and I stare at him from the side of my eyes.
"I'll, uh… I'll go tell the others something came up, and you had to leave." He says, and I nod without looking at him.
"Yeah. Thanks." I reply, and he turns around.
Mark hesitates for half a second, then turns and heads back toward the house with Jude.
The moment Anu and I are alone, the peace the night previously handed me vanishes.
Anu's breathing starts to slow, but she's still trembling violently.
I can feel it through my arms… through my chest.
I softly pull back, just enough to look at her face.
Her eyes are glassy, her lashes clumped with tears, and her lips are parted as she drags in uneven breaths.
