Chapter 34 - Behind You

The forest held its breath.

One of the Yggthra raised its massive, wedge-shaped head, scales gleaming with a faint, oily iridescence in the dim light. It moved closer to James, its body sliding through the undergrowth with an eerie, fluid silence. Closer. Closer. Its jaws parted slightly, revealing rows of needle-sharp teeth, each one the length of a dagger.

Then, just as it coiled to strike, a beam of concentrated light erupted from the trees.

It struck the creature directly between the eyes—a clean, devastating shot that punched straight through scales, flesh, and bone. The Yggthra's body went rigid for a single heartbeat, then collapsed, its skull smoldering.

Kai didn't wait for acknowledgment. He was already nocking another arrow, his eyes scanning the shadows for the next target.

The remaining Yggthras reacted instantly. Five heads rose, their bodies unfurling to their full, terrifying height—easily three times the size of a man, their forms a nightmare of muscle, scale, and hunger. They towered over James, striking one at a time with blinding speed.

But James was ready.

He twisted, the first strike grazing past his ribs. He ducked, the second sailing over his head. He rolled, the third slamming into the earth where he'd been standing, sending up a spray of dirt and shattered roots.

"Now, Koby!" he shouted.

Koby exploded from the undergrowth. Aura flared around his body as he launched himself from tree to tree, using trunks and branches as springboards, building momentum with each leap. His hatchets glowed with channeled energy.

"Hatchet Fury!"

He came down like a meteor. The first hatchet bit deep into the nearest Yggthra's flank, carving a gash through scales and muscle. Before the creature could react, Koby pivoted, using the momentum to slash at a second Yggthra—this strike less damaging, more of a shove, pushing it back into its kin.

The Yggthras shook off the attacks with terrifying speed. They recovered in seconds, their fangs bared, their slit-pupiled eyes fixed on Koby and James with cold, reptilian fury.

Two of them struck simultaneously—one aiming for Koby, one for James.

They never landed.

Raya stepped between them. Her fist, crackling with concentrated aura, connected with the first Yggthra's jaw. The impact sent the creature hurtling sideways into its companion. Both beasts tumbled through the undergrowth, crashing into a massive ironwood trunk with a sound like thunder.

Koby and James stared.

Raya lowered her fist, her breathing controlled, her stance steady. The ground around her feet had cracked from the force of her strike.

"Lyrielle's training," she said flatly, "has been going well. Now move."

They moved.

Another Yggthra lunged, its massive body slamming into the earth where they'd been standing. Debris exploded outward—chunks of soil, splintered roots, fragments of stone—but Raya stood her ground. She planted her feet, braced herself, and as the creature raised its head for another strike, she charged her palm.

The punch drove the Yggthra's skull deep into the earth.

In response, the creature's tail whipped around, a blur of scaled muscle aimed at her ribs. Raya threw up her forearms, absorbing the impact with a grunt. The force of it pushed her back, her boots carving furrows in the soil, but she held. The tail withdrew, and she straightened, gasping for air.

She turned to Koby and James, who were watching her with a mixture of awe and disbelief.

"Go after the others," she said, her voice firm despite her heaving chest. "I'll handle this one."

They didn't argue. Koby and James ran.

The remaining three Yggthras were recovering, two of them shaking their massive heads, still dazed from Raya's earlier punch. James reached them first.

"First Technique: Thousand Strikes!"

His sword became a blur—dozens of thrusts in the span of seconds, each one carrying a charge of aura that exploded on impact. The strikes were precise, concentrated, devastating within a small radius. But the Yggthra he targeted was fast. It twisted, presenting its back, and the hardened scales along its spine absorbed the barrage with minimal damage. Sparks flew. The creature hissed, but it didn't fall.

Koby was already moving. He leaped over James, hatchets gleaming.

"Dual Bite!"

His weapons flared with light as he brought them down on the Yggthra James had been fighting, driving it away from its companion. The creature recoiled, and for a moment, the two were separated.

The third Yggthra saw its chance. It lunged at Koby's exposed back.

A beam of light slammed into its scaly hide.

The creature lurched, confused, its head swiveling as it searched for the source of the attack. High in the trees, Kai cursed under his breath.

"I missed," he muttered. The beam had hit, but not where he'd aimed—the Yggthra's scales had deflected most of the damage.

The creature's eyes found him.

It moved faster than anything its size should. In seconds, it was at the base of his tree, coiling to strike. Kai didn't hesitate. He slid down the trunk, using his bow to slow his descent, and hit the ground running.

He turned to face the beast, which now towered above him, blotting out what little light filtered through the canopy.

Kai fired. Beams lanced from his bow, one after another, but the Yggthra was fast—it dodged, weaved, absorbed glancing blows on its armored flanks. Then it struck.

Kai rolled. The Yggthra's head slammed into the earth where he'd been standing, sending up a shower of debris that pelted his back as he scrambled away. He came up on one knee, bow raised, ready to fire—

And found himself staring directly into the path of the creature's tail.

It was already moving. Too fast. Too close.

Kai's breath caught. He couldn't dodge. He couldn't raise his bow in time. This was it.

Then something massive slammed into the Yggthra from the side.

The creature was hurled through the air, tumbling end over end, and crashed into Kai's attacker. Both Yggthras went down in a tangle of scales and thrashing limbs.

Kai stared. Heart racing widely. He was alive.

Across the clearing, Raya lowered her fist. She had punched her own Yggthra—the one she'd been fighting—directly into his. The force required... he couldn't comprehend it.

"Remind me," Kai said, his voice slightly strangled, "never to piss you off."

He didn't wait for a response. He raised his bow, channeling every ounce of aura he could muster into a single, devastating beam. The energy built, crackling along the length of the weapon, until he couldn't hold it any longer.

He released.

The beam tore through the air, striking the two disoriented Yggthras dead-on. One of them went limp instantly—killed outright. The other shrieked, thrashing wildly, badly wounded but still alive.

Raya didn't hesitate. She rushed forward, dodging the injured creature's panicked strikes, weaving through the debris it flung in its death throes. Her fist charged with aura as she leaped, coming down with a blow that exploded the earth around them.

The Yggthra writhed, but it didn't die. Its scales had absorbed the worst of it.

Raya landed, gasping. Blunt force wasn't enough. She needed something else.

She reached deep into herself, into the well of power Lyrielle had taught her to access. Vines erupted from the forest floor, thick as pythons, wrapping around the Yggthra's body, pinning it in place. The creature thrashed, but the vines held.

Behind Raya, something stirred.

A plant—if it could be called that—rose from the soil. It stood over seven feet tall, its stalk thick and fibrous, its head a massive, drooping sunflower that seemed to pulse with inner light. The flower opened, revealing a core of brilliant, concentrated energy.

The beam that erupted from it was silent but devastating. It struck the restrained Yggthra dead center, piercing through scales, flesh, and bone. The creature convulsed once, twice, and then went still.

Raya dropped to her knees, gasping. The summoned sunflower wilted, crumbling to ash.

Kai caught her before she could fall face-first into the mud.

"Are you okay?" he asked, genuine concern cutting through his usual sarcasm.

"Yeah," Raya breathed, leaning heavily against him. "That took... more aura than I thought. A lot more."

"Where did you learn that?" Kai's eyes were wide. "That plant thing?"

"Lyrielle taught me." A faint, exhausted smile touched her lips. "Though she said mine would be... weaker. It's nothing compared to hers."

Kai helped her to her feet, and together they made their way toward Koby and James, who were walking toward them from the opposite side of the clearing. The bodies of the Yggthra children lay scattered around them, still and silent.

James scanned them all, his eyes lingering on Raya's pale face. "Is everyone okay?"

"Yeah," Raya said, leaning on Kai's shoulder for support. "Just... drained."

"Surprisingly," Kai said, and despite everything, a smile crept onto his face—genuine, surprised, relieved, "we actually survived."

Koby noticed it immediately. "Is that a smile I see? Kai Morgan, smiling? In public?"

"What smile?" Kai's face went carefully blank. "You're imagining things. Stress. Hallucinations."

They shared a breath of laughter—short, exhausted, but real.

And then the world exploded.

A tail—massive, scaled, thicker than any of them—wrapped around Koby. He didn't even have time to shout before he was ripped from the ground and hurled through the air like a ragdoll.

He smashed through branches. Through trunks. Through everything. The impact when he finally struck a massive ironwood tree was sickening—a wet, heavy crunch that left a deep crater in the bark. Blood sprayed from his mouth.

"KOBY!"

Raya was the first to move. She ran, Kai and James close behind, and reached him as he slid down the trunk, leaving a smear of red on the wood.

"It's okay, Koby," Raya said, her hands already glowing with healing light while her eyes filled with horror at the severity of the injury."You're okay. Just hold still."

Koby coughed. More blood. His eyes were wide, unfocused, desperate.

"What is it?" James knelt beside him. "What's wrong?"

Koby's lips moved. No sound came out at first. Then, a whisper:

"Behind... you..."

They turned.

Two eyes stared back at them.

Green. Slitted. Massive—each one the size of a dinner plate. They were set in a head that rose from the darkness like a mountain emerging from shadow, attached to a body that seemed to go on forever. This Yggthra dwarfed the others they had fought. Where the children had been large, this one was cataclysmic. Five times their size. Maybe more. The aura rolling off it was palpable—a wave of pressure that made breathing difficult, that made thought itself feel sluggish.

And then the window appeared, its text burning bright against the darkness.
