Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 – Whispers in the Shadows

The morning sun spilled through the apartment windows, painting the kitchen in warm golden hues. Karan hummed softly as he moved around the counter, chopping fresh vegetables with precise, fluid movements. His live stream camera was set up on a tripod, though he hadn't gone live yet; today was meant to be a quiet day, one of preparation, experimentation, and surprise for Arthit.

Arthit lounged at the small breakfast table, scrolling through business reports on his tablet, occasionally glancing up to watch Karan work. His presence was magnetic—calm, commanding, yet softened by the domesticity of the apartment.

"You're quiet today," Karan observed, glancing over his shoulder with a playful smile. "Plotting world domination in between bites of my omelet?"

Arthit smirked, setting the tablet down. "You could say that. Or… keeping an eye on you. You've been extra sneaky with your ingredients lately."

Karan chuckled, wiping his hands on his apron before leaning closer. "I'm just trying to impress you. Or… maybe I want to steal your attention before your business plans get in the way."

Arthit tilted his head, eyes narrowing slightly. "And? Am I impressed?"

"You already are," Karan said, leaning down to brush a soft kiss across his cheek. "But I like saying it anyway."

Their quiet morning was interrupted by the soft vibration of Arthit's phone. He picked it up, scanning the message with a faint frown.

"What is it?" Karan asked, glancing over his shoulder.

Arthit's lips pressed into a thin line. "It's my father. He wants to meet."

Karan froze mid-motion, a carrot in his hand. "Your… father? Here? Now?"

Arthit nodded slowly, setting the phone aside. "Yes. He says it's urgent. And… I don't like the word 'urgent' when it comes from him."

Karan felt a subtle tension settle in his chest. Mr. Sakda had always been calculating, dangerous, and precise. Every word, every gesture, every meeting carried weight. And yet, he remained calm, refusing to show fear in front of Arthit.

"Then we'll handle it," Karan said softly, moving closer to Arthit. "Together. No matter what he wants, we're ready."

Arthit's hand brushed over Karan's, fingers entwining naturally. "I know. That's why I'm not worried… with you here."

Mr. Sakda Arrives

By late afternoon, a sleek black car pulled up outside the apartment building. Karan, who had just finished arranging a new plate for the live stream, peered out the window. Mr. Sakda stepped out, his posture impeccable, his eyes sharp and calculating as they scanned the surroundings before finally resting on the apartment.

Arthit's expression hardened slightly, muscles tensing under his relaxed exterior. "He's here," he murmured.

Karan moved to stand beside him, brushing a reassuring hand over Arthit's arm. "I've got your back. Always."

When the doorbell rang, both men shared a silent glance before Karan moved to answer. Mr. Sakda entered smoothly, his presence filling the room with quiet authority.

"Arthit," he greeted, voice even but carrying unmistakable weight. "Karan." His eyes lingered on Karan for a moment longer than expected, sharp and assessing. "I see you've made quite the home here."

Karan inclined his head politely. "Thank you, sir. It's… cozy. And Arthit makes it even better."

Mr. Sakda's lips curved into a faint, unreadable smile. "I've noticed," he said, eyes flicking briefly to Arthit, who had stood by Karan's side. "You've… changed things here. Very domestic. Very… ordinary. I wonder if you can handle extraordinary."

Karan's gaze didn't falter. "I handle what I need to handle. Arthit's safety, happiness… and everything in between. That's extraordinary enough for me."

Arthit's eyes met Karan's briefly, a small, approving nod. Karan's calm, firm tone was exactly what he needed—a shield, a reassurance.

Mr. Sakda's attention shifted subtly, like a predator circling. "I see. And yet… I have my doubts. Life has a way of reminding us that nothing lasts. Nothing is ever truly safe."

Karan met his gaze evenly. "Then I'll prove you wrong."

A Cooking Show Demonstration

Sensing the tension in the room, Karan cleared his throat lightly. "Since you're here… perhaps a demonstration would be better than words. Would you like to see?"

Mr. Sakda raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite himself. "Show me what you've learned, Karan."

Karan's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Gladly." He stepped into the kitchen, moving with graceful precision, chopping, seasoning, and preparing a delicate dish: **lemongrass-infused chicken with a chili-citrus glaze**, garnished with fresh basil and edible flowers.

As he cooked, he explained each step, showing not just skill but creativity, a natural command of flavors, and attention to detail. Even Arthit leaned closer, impressed with the way Karan moved, focused, yet playful.

Mr. Sakda's sharp gaze never left him, yet for a brief moment, there was something like… approval. Or curiosity. "You've certainly learned quickly," he murmured, voice low.

Karan smiled politely. "I've had excellent teachers."

Arthit's lips curved into a soft smile, brushing a hand along Karan's back as he plated the final dish. "Always impressive," he whispered.

The dish was presented, the aroma filling the apartment, tempting and sophisticated. Mr. Sakda tasted a small bite, his expression unreadable. Then, after a measured pause, he nodded slightly. "Interesting. I'll admit… this is better than I expected."

Karan allowed himself a small smile, bowing his head subtly. "Thank you, sir. That means a lot."

Arthit exhaled softly, leaning against Karan's shoulder. "See? You've got this."

Karan's fingers intertwined with his, brushing along the warmth of his skin. "We've got this. Always."

A Subtle Warning

Once the food was shared, conversation turned, but the undercurrent of caution remained. Mr. Sakda leaned back slightly, voice measured, eyes flicking between Karan and Arthit.

"You've created a life here," he said slowly. "Comfortable. Safe. Predictable." His eyes darkened, a subtle warning in the depths. "But the world doesn't wait. People who watch… who wait… they do not forgive mistakes. You think you can keep him shielded from everything? From me? From your enemies? From the past?"

Karan met him with calm firmness. "I don't just shield him. I protect him, love him, and ensure nothing… or no one… takes him from me. That includes you, if necessary."

Arthit's gaze hardened slightly, a flicker of danger beneath his composed exterior. "Enough," he said quietly. "We've endured more than anyone knows. We are stronger than threats, past or present. You don't need to test that."

Mr. Sakda's lips curved into a thin, enigmatic smile. "Very well… for now." He rose smoothly, moving toward the door. "But remember… the world watches. And sometimes, the shadows you ignore carry the sharpest blades."

Karan and Arthit exchanged a tense glance. The visit was over—for now—but the warning lingered in the air.

Evening Calm

Once Mr. Sakda had left, the apartment fell into a calm hush. Karan cleaned up the counter while Arthit leaned against him, resting his head on Karan's shoulder.

"You handled that well," Arthit murmured. "Better than I expected."

Karan chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to his temple. "I had a great partner to stand beside. And honestly… I kind of like proving him wrong."

Arthit smiled, tugging him close. "You don't have to prove anything to me. I already know you're everything I need."

Karan ran a hand along his back, sighing contentedly. "And I've got you. Always."

As night settled over the city, the apartment was filled with warmth, laughter, and the subtle intimacy of two people who had fought for their love and now cherished it fiercely.

Yet outside, in the shadows, a plan began to form—a careful, calculated movement by Mr. Sakda, whose mind never rested. The quiet life Karan and Arthit had built was precious, fragile, and now… under unseen scrutiny.

But inside the apartment, that world didn't exist. Here, there was only love, trust, and the soft comfort of home. And for now… that was enough.
