CHAPTER 33 — BLOOD IN THE JUNGLE
The jungle was alive with tension, every rustle of leaves and snapping twig echoing like a warning. The air had grown thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else—something metallic, something dark. Kael's crimson eyes swept through the dense foliage, muscles coiled, senses sharp. Rowan moved beside him, twin shadows of power, ready to strike at the first sign of danger.
Aria rode slightly ahead, unaware of the shifting shadows, her hand brushing against Kael's as they guided their horses through a narrow path. Lysandra followed, uneasy, her confident demeanor from earlier replaced by a growing unease. She had survived hunts before, but now, with the forest pressing in and unseen predators circling, her bravado faltered.
From the undergrowth, movement stirred. Shadows leapt across branches. Then, as if emerging from the very air itself, rogue vampires descended upon them, eyes glinting crimson, fangs bared, claws extended. Their numbers were small, but their speed was deadly, honed from centuries of hunting.
Kael didn't hesitate. His hand went to his sword, Rowan mirroring his stance, every movement precise, practiced, lethal.
"Stay behind us!" Kael barked to Aria and Lysandra, his voice sharp over the cacophony of snapping branches and vampire snarls.
Aria's pulse raced, but her instinct was to move forward, to protect. Kael caught her wrist gently, holding her in place. "Not now. Stay with them."
But the rogue vampires were fast. A clawed hand reached for Aria, and Kael swung his sword in a deadly arc, cutting one vampire in half. Rowan moved beside him, fangs bared, taking another down with swift precision. The ground became a battlefield of shadows and red, the forest echoing with growls and roars.
Despite their skill, the vampires pressed on, relentless. Aria's eyes widened in horror as a vampire leapt at her side. Kael acted instantly, sweeping her onto his back as he fought, shielding her from the sharp claws.
"Hold on!" he growled, moving toward a more defensible spot deeper in the jungle—a small clearing surrounded by thick roots and vines.
Rowan stayed at the rear, cutting down any vampire that tried to follow. Their combined efforts slowed the attackers, but the rogue vampires were cunning, circling, probing for weakness.
Finally, they reached a narrow cave-like opening, barely large enough for the horses to squeeze through. Kael dismounted, carrying Aria to safety inside. Lysandra stumbled in after them, pale and trembling, her earlier confidence shattered. Seraphina trailed behind, silent and calculating, bow gripped tightly.
Kael's crimson eyes scanned the area. "Stay close. Do not move."
Lysandra's teeth chattered. "I… I thought I could handle myself. I didn't think…" Her voice trailed off as she realized just how vulnerable she was, how easily the forest could have claimed her.
Seraphina's eyes, however, remained sharp, predatory. She observed Aria carefully, noting the girl's rising fear, her growing tension. But there was something else—a spark, subtle, dangerous, barely noticeable.
The rogue vampires regrouped outside the cave. Their movements were deliberate, testing, circling, waiting for the right moment to strike again. And then they lunged, faster and more aggressive than before, trying to breach the temporary sanctuary Kael had created.
Aria's eyes flared instinctively, panic and fear mixing with an untrained surge of power. She stepped forward, raising her hands. A vampire lunged at her, and before Kael could react, she felt a strange energy coursing through her. A light—blinding, almost divine—erupted from her body, startling even her.
Lysandra froze, eyes wide. Seraphina's frown deepened, calculating. "What…?" she whispered, voice sharp with disbelief.
Aria's panic fueled her instinct. She focused, and to everyone's shock, the vampire nearest to her froze mid-leap, blood visible under its skin trembling unnaturally. Aria's hands moved almost without thought, fingers curling, and with a single motion, the vampire's head exploded in a spray of dark blood, splattering across the cave walls, Seraphina, and Lysandra.
Lysandra screamed, backing away, horrified and awed. "What… what just—"
Seraphina's lips pressed into a thin line, studying Aria with newfound wariness. This was no ordinary human; this was something else. Something dangerous. Her mind whirred, plotting a new strategy, a new way to use Aria's fear against her.
Kael and Rowan were still outside, fending off the remaining rogue vampires, their swords flashing, bodies moving with perfect synchrony. The shrill scream of Lysandra cut through the forest, alerting them to Aria's position. Kael's eyes widened as he saw the blood-splattered cave, his chest tightening.
"Aria!" he shouted, plunging into the cave, Rowan right behind him.
Aria stumbled, exhausted from the surge of power, knees threatening to give out. Kael caught her mid-fall, pulling her against his chest. Her hair was damp with sweat and flecks of dark blood. Her golden eyes, wide with both fear and newfound understanding of her abilities, met his.
"You… you're okay," he said, voice low, fierce, and laced with something she hadn't heard before—concern, admiration, and something softer, unspoken.
Aria's body trembled against him. "I… I didn't mean—"
"You saved yourself," Kael interrupted gently. "And everyone else. That was… incredible." His hand brushed against her back, holding her steady as her breathing slowed.
Lysandra, still trembling, muttered dramatically, "I… I didn't think she could… that light…" Her voice faltered as she struggled to comprehend what she had witnessed.
Seraphina, however, stepped back, eyes narrowed. Her mind raced, plotting. This unexpected turn had changed everything. Kael's guard might be distracted now, Aria's powers unknown, but she would not falter. She would wait, and she would strike when the time was right.
Kael's gaze lingered on Aria, chest tight, his mind unusually quiet except for one persistent thought—he would protect her, no matter what, and that included keeping her close, keeping her safe, and learning more about the power she had just revealed.
Aria, exhausted and trembling, leaned against him, her heartbeat slowing, her body still quivering from both fear and adrenaline. This was only the beginning. Something within her had awakened—a force she did not yet understand, a power that might change everything.
Outside, the rogue vampires regrouped, snarling, but they did not press further. Kael and Rowan had shown them the cost of aggression, and for now, the jungle fell into uneasy silence.
Seraphina's eyes lingered on Aria, calculating, her mind alive with new schemes. Lysandra huddled in the corner, still pale and shaken. And Aria, still trembling in Kael's arms, realized that she had tapped into something dangerous, something she had never known existed within her—a power that might save them all, or destroy them if she could not control it.
And in that moment, Kael's heart, too, understood something. He was falling for her, utterly, irreversibly, and no force in the Moonborn Kingdom—no vampire, no witch, no rogue shadow—would stop him from keeping her safe
