Chapter 77 - Chapter 77: Survival

From the second quarter on, the game between the Lakers and the Jazz turned into a grueling tug-of-war.

Jerry Sloan's team was the definition of disciplined. Coupled with his "Bench Mob," they maintained relentless defensive pressure throughout the game.

For the Lakers, rookie Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic stepped up big tonight. Farmar frequently drove the lane to create opportunities, while Vujacic knocked down two clutch threes, ensuring the Lakers didn't lose ground during the rotation minutes.

At halftime, the score stood at 48-45, with the Lakers trailing by 3.

Kobe had already poured in 22 points. Link, despite only scoring 4, was playing a crucial role on the defensive end.

Deron Williams had 12 points but was held to just 3 assists. The Jazz's signature pick-and-roll system hadn't been fully unleashed.

In the locker room, the Zen Master didn't say much. He simply wiped the whiteboard clean and redrew the plays.

"In the second half, they'll adjust. Link, Deron might hold the ball less. Stick close to him. Don't give him any easy catches."

Link nodded while chugging an electrolyte drink.

In the third quarter, just as Phil Jackson predicted, Sloan adjusted his tactics.

Deron stopped trying to attack Link's defense head-on. Instead, the Jazz started playing team basketball. Deron only took 3 shots in the entire third quarter, making just one. However, the Jazz role players began to make plays.

On the Lakers' side, Kobe's hand remained scorching hot, scoring another 11 points in the quarter.

By the end of the third, it was 73-71, Lakers up by 2.

The final battle began in the fourth quarter. While the starters rested, neither team could pull away.

With 7:22 left in the game, Deron checked back in. Link returned to the court at the same time.

The two locked eyes. Nothing was said, but the air was thick with tension.

Crunch time is all about the details.

Jazz possession.

Deron and Boozer ran the pick-and-roll. Boozer set a solid screen and popped out to the other side. Deron threw a bounce pass, but Odom managed to deflect it out of bounds.

Still Jazz ball. 3 seconds left on the shot clock.

The inbound pass went to the veteran Derek Fisher, who forced up a three.

Airball.

Kobe grabbed the rebound and pushed the pace instantly. Facing multiple Jazz defenders, Kobe drove into the paint and kicked it out.

Link caught it at the top of the key.

This was his first true open look of the second half. Andrei Kirilenko closed out, but he was a step late.

Link caught, jumped, and released. His form was textbook perfect.

Swish!

Good!

Lakers 85-81!

It was Link's second field goal of the game, bringing him to 7 points. But this bucket was absolutely critical!

EnergySolutions Arena went silent for a moment.

On the other end, Deron forced a drive and drew a foul. Two free throws made. 85-83!

Back to the Lakers. Kobe responded immediately with his signature fadeaway jumper.

87-83.

The game continued in a suffocating rhythm. The defensive intensity from both sides was immense. Everyone's stamina was pushed to the breaking point.

The Lakers clung to a slim lead thanks to Kobe's brilliance.

But with 2:17 left, the wind shifted dramatically.

First, Boozer muscled Bynum in the post for a hook shot. Then, Odom missed a mid-range jumper for the Lakers. The Jazz capitalized, with Okur nailing an open three from the outside.

But it wasn't over. The Jazz forced a steal on defense.

Deron pushed the ball up quickly for a coast-to-coast layup. Link chased him down, pinning the ball against the backboard for a massive block, barely getting his fingertips on it.

A collective groan of pity rose from the home crowd.

The Lakers bench was just about to celebrate when the ball, having ricocheted off the backboard, fell straight into the hands of the trailing Derek Fisher.

"Big Shot Fish," from the left wing at a 45-degree angle, hoisted a highly difficult three over a defender.

The moment it left his hand, the trajectory looked a bit off. Everyone's heart jumped into their throat. The ball traced a super high arc through the air.

Link looked up while battling furiously for position under the basket. His teammates were scrambling back into defensive position.

Under everyone's gaze, the ball banked cleanly off the glass and in!

Jazz by 3.

In just over a minute, the Jazz had gone on an 8-0 run.

93-90, Jazz up by 3.

Only 37 seconds remained.

The Zen Master called a timeout. 37 seconds, down 3.

The sudden turn of events had thrown the Lakers' rhythm into chaos. The crowd's cheers threatened to blow the roof off.

The chant "BEAT LA" was unified and deafening, nearly bursting the eardrums of the visiting players.

But there was plenty of time on the shot clock. During the short timeout, Phil Jackson didn't draw up a complex play.

He called for the simplest one: "Starburst"!

Everyone lined up, then exploded in different directions to create a catching opportunity for Kobe.

The moment the whistle blew, everyone's hearts were in their mouths.

Kobe used his agility to shake off defenders. The Lakers barely managed to get the ball to him before the five-second violation.

The Jazz instantly double-teamed him. Defensive stalwarts Kirilenko and Matt Harpring acted like sentries, sealing off Kobe's path on both sides.

Kobe dribbled toward the top of the key to reset, moving away from the danger zone. The defenders stuck to him like glue.

Lakers players took turns setting screens for Kobe, trying to create even a sliver of space.

Kobe seized a moment, took a huge stride, lowered his center of gravity, and attacked the paint. Near the key, almost leaning on Kirilenko, he threw up a floater.

It didn't hit the rim!

Players from both sides scrambled for the ball. Kobe didn't have time to complain to the ref about a potential foul on Kirilenko. He immediately joined the fray.

Under the basket, bodies were tangled, and no one could control the ball. In the chaos, the ball found its way back to Kobe in the corner.

The shot clock was winding down.

Kobe didn't hesitate. One dribble, step back behind the three-point line, and an extreme fadeaway over Kirilenko.

AK-47's long arm was practically in Kobe's eye.

The moment the ball left his hand, the red light on the backboard lit up. Shot clock expired.

The ball dropped into the net with incredible precision.

And then, a slightly delayed whistle blew.

Kirilenko invaded his landing space. Foul!

The three-pointer counted, plus one free throw!

On the edge of death, the Lakers had found a lifeline!

The entire EnergySolutions Arena felt like it had been choked into silence. The Jazz fans, raucous just moments ago, were instantly mute.

The only sound was the explosion of cheers from the Lakers bench.

Kobe lay on the floor, staring straight at his defender. The cold-blooded Black Mamba bared his lethal fangs!

Kirilenko held his head, looking bewildered. There was regret, and disbelief.

The away arena was dead silent. A young fan covered his mouth in shock. Most just hung their heads.

Kobe Bryant, the undisputed silencer of away crowds.

Kobe stepped to the line and calmly sank the free throw.

94-93! Lakers up by 1!

13 seconds left. Enough for a full possession.

There was no suspense about Sloan's final play: Deron Williams.

The Jazz had no timeouts left. The inbound pass went to Deron.

He pushed up the court quickly, with Link sticking to him like a leech.

Multiple Jazz players came up to set screens. Although brief openings appeared, time didn't allow for complex movement.

With 2.1 seconds left, Deron spun back, gathered, and pulled up for a mid-range jumper.

Link predicted his choice perfectly. His arm completely obscured Deron's vision. All Deron could see was a purple and gold shadow.

Forced to adjust his arc higher, the ball grazed Link's fingertips as it left Deron's hand, its trajectory altered.

The ball traced a noticeably crooked arc through the air.

Bang... Clang...

The ball hit the side of the rim, bounced off the neck, and finally fell harmlessly to the floor.

Simultaneously, the final buzzer sounded.

The Lakers had escaped Salt Lake City with their lives.

Kobe exploded for 47 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, contributing the deadly four-point play.

Link's stat line was modest: 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal.

But his defense on Deron was the key to the victory!
