I walked into Mr. Fairchild's office wearing my sweetest, most innocent smile, the kind that usually helps me get out of tight spots, especially with folks who don't know me too well.
As I shut the door behind me, the soft click seemed to resonate in the suddenly quiet room. He stood by the large window, his back turned to me, arms crossed so tightly that his crisp white shirt strained across his broad shoulders.
For a long moment, he stayed still and silent, letting the tension fill the air, almost heavy with whatever was brewing inside him.
Finally, he turned around, slow and steady, like a predator who'd decided the chase was over. His eyes were darker than I'd ever seen, pupils wide, and when he spoke, his voice came out low and rough, each word measured, it was clear he didn't want to give away too much by raising his volume.
"You seem to be getting quite friendly with the new employee." He said.
