Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 A familiar scene

Year 1 of the Sea Era (1496), New World – Réunion Island

Vegapunk stared at the closed warehouse door, recalling the boy's promise just moments ago. A faint smile curled on his lips before he decisively turned and walked toward his laboratory.

Back in the lab, he sat at the experiment table, lost in thought. Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the corridor, and a beautiful figure pushed the door open. She didn't approach Vegapunk immediately but leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

"You sent that kid away. I really liked him. Doctor, how do you plan to make it up to me?"

It was Stussy, and her demeanor was unlike her usual self.

"Should I call you Stussy? Or should I call you 'Baker Stussy'?"

"Hahaha, enough with the silly questions, Doctor. But I truly didn't expect that kid to become your weak spot. I didn't report Leo to the government."

"Ha… who would've thought the bloodline-factor experiment was actually completed so long ago, and the first experimental subject was his colleague? Only those three fools—Judge, Caesar, and Queen—were left in the dark," Vegapunk muttered to himself.

In an instant, Stussy appeared behind Vegapunk and rested a hand on his shoulder.

"Doctor, we're both smart. Right now, only you know my secret. If you reveal it, no one will ever know."

With a click, the ceiling and walls of the lab revealed countless small openings. Cold gun barrels all pointed at Vegapunk. Even more astonishing, each muzzle emitted a crisscrossing light beam.

"I've devoted my life to scientific research, and at my age, I've never been in love. Your character isn't perfect, but you're not bad-looking. Want to go to hell with me?" Vegapunk said expressionlessly, words incongruent with his usual persona.

"Doctor, at your age, why are you still so stubborn? Fine, fine, let's call it even. Let's erase both the kid's existence and my identity from this world," Stussy said, lowering her arms and slipping back toward the door.

Another figure entered the lab, identical in appearance to Stussy.

"Alright, Doctor, I'm here to say goodbye. From now on, she is Stussy. We will never meet again."

With that, Stussy gracefully walked out of the office, her footsteps fading into the distance. The corridor echoed with the faint sound of her humming. Reckless Rocks, foolish Golden Lion, and slow-witted Newgate would never appear again. Only I have truly gained freedom—living under the sun… hehehe.

Leo piloted a small submarine, hovering near Réunion Island. "Teacher… I can't save you this time, so I'll have to deliver you myself," he thought. Within his perception, a massive fleet approached the island from five nautical miles away.

After days of training, Leo's senses could detect feedback within a 10-nautical-mile radius—not just vague impressions, but clear images. He could see reflections in the water and even hear sounds transmitted through it.

Three large warships appeared in his vision. One flew the World Government's flag, the other two the Navy's. Leo knew they were here to capture his teacher. Though he wanted to fire upon them, reason ultimately prevailed.

On the government ship, a soldier reported to a man in a white suit and mask:"Sir, Réunion Island is ahead. Orders?"

"Surround the island from left to right. Destroy any ships nearby before we return."

Government forces had arrived at Réunion Island. People jumped off the ships and stepped onto the crescent-shaped pier.

Inside the MADS laboratory, Queen enjoyed red bean soup as usual. Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the room. Soup spilled everywhere, and Queen's eyes blazed with fury.

"Who the hell did this?" he roared.

Before he could vent further, the lab alarm blared. Intruders had infiltrated the area, and the automated defenses were completely destroyed.

Queen went berserk, grabbed his weapon, and charged. He encountered several CP0 agents at the entrance. Seeing they didn't react, he opened fire with his multi-barrel Hellfire gun, aiming to shred them to pieces.

[Razor]—a CP0 agent—appeared behind Queen. Before he could react, blades pierced his back, leaving gaping, bloody wounds. Queen screamed and collapsed.

Inside the lab, Judge hid against the wall, holding his breath. Peeking out, he observed the passing CP0 agents."Damn it… how did World Government agents get here? Who leaked the information?" he muttered. Once the agents disappeared, he glanced at the case in his hands. Fortunately, all research had been secured, allowing him to escape.

Storm Kick! Blood Blade!

Just as Judge was about to flee, a heavy blow pierced the wall behind him, striking his back. He fell silently, eyes rolling back, blood gushing, buried under debris.

"What happened?" the CP0 chief asked repeatedly.

"Just a minor issue. It won't affect the mission," another agent replied emotionlessly.

"Who are you? How did you get in? No… don't… hit my face!"

Caesar's words were cut off as a fist slammed him to the ground, blood streaming from his mouth and nose.

Thud, thud, thud—the steady footsteps approached and finally stopped outside Vegapunk's lab.

Caesar, dragged along the way, now bore even more injuries, new swelling on his head.

Creak! The lead CP0 agent pushed the door open and turned to Stussy leaning against the wall.

Standing at attention, Stussy saluted:"Sir, Vegapunk offers no resistance. He can be taken anytime. All research has been secured."

"Well done. Your contribution will be recognized. Escort Vegapunk to Mary Geoise with us."

"Yes, sir," Stussy said, stepping forward and gesturing for Vegapunk to follow.

Vegapunk silently observed everything. Standing, he followed the CP0 agents out. The operation was quiet and orderly, as if they were escorting a VIP rather than apprehending a criminal.

Everything went smoothly. Once Vegapunk boarded the ship, the lead CP0 ordered a return, disappearing into the sea soon after.

Leo watched from afar, silently bidding farewell to his teacher, committing the name CP0 to memory. This was the second teacher taken from him.

Suddenly, another massive ship entered his perception—this time, a pirate ship. A colossal pirate vessel approached Réunion Island. At the bow sat a hulking man, drinking from a gourd:

"Ah, working solo at sea is so hard! This time, I'll grab a strong man as my crew!"

A muscular man with dragon horns and dragon-scale tattoos on his arms drank and cried simultaneously, his alcoholism evident.

"Kaido, mind your words. We sincerely invite Queen to join the Beasts Pirates. Don't speak your thoughts aloud," a man with black wings behind him said.

"Kin… come drink with me! Hiccup!"

"Brother, business comes first!"

"Hic! Nap… snore…" Kaido, oblivious, fell asleep, bubbles forming in his nose.

Leo maneuvered the submarine five nautical miles from the pirate ship, thinking, "Hmph! The World Government's tactics are still the same, using pirates as a cover."

Listening in, he clenched his fists in anger. The situation at Réunion Island mirrored that of his home, Sphinx Island—pirates used to conceal the truth. Memories of Susanna, Rick, and everyone on Sphinx Island fueled his rage.

World Government? Pirates? They're all villains. Justice or evil doesn't matter. Sorry, Kaido, if we meet today, I'll unleash my fury.

The submarine silently surfaced. A massive hollow water sphere descended, concealing air inside. To hide himself, Leo planned to detonate a compressed-air bomb underwater.

Feel the fury of the sea! Debris and small glowing spheres escaped Leo's control, sinking to the bottom of the Beasts Pirates' ship.

Meanwhile, Kaido, dozing at the bow, suddenly popped a snot bubble. Startled, he transformed into his beast form.

"Kin, be careful—someone's attacking from underwater…"

Before he could finish, a white light enveloped him. A massive shockwave erupted, splashing water everywhere. At the center, a green dragon soared into the sky, clutching a tattered man. Kin's arm hung limply, bleeding. Even a warrior as strong as him suffered from Leo's attack.

"Who dares attack me?"

Roar! The dragon's roar echoed across the sky. Kaido could only bellow helplessly. His Observation Haki detected no powerful lifeforms. The dragon soared above, tornadoes and lightning tearing through the sea, generating massive waves.

"Kaido, ignore the kid! Let's head to the island." Soon, Kin's wound stopped bleeding.

"Hmph! If I catch him, I'll toss him into a cauldron!" Kaido muttered, reluctantly flying toward the island.

Moments later, a furious roar echoed across the island. "Who the hell did this?"
