Chapter 192 - The Crooked Lantern

Thuận listened to both offers without interruption.

That restraint lasted until Tân Phong described the requested route map.

"You went alone?"

"It arrived through my application."

"You should have called."

"During the interview?"

"Before entering."

"I thought it was ordinary."

"Nothing involving an unexplained scholarship is ordinary now."

Tân Thành placed the armband on the floor. "This is exactly why we waited."

Thuận turned. "They transported students while you wore that."

"I know."

"You helped."

"I know."

The answer denied Thuận the clean position of accusation.

Hạo Nhiên set the crooked lantern between them.

"Training," he said.

Nobody wanted training. That was why it was useful.

He gave Tân Phong a route to an outer marker and told him he could leave the drill permanently if he reached it. He gave Tân Thành authority over the central door. He gave Thuận the locations of six paper flowers but no command rights.

Then he attacked the field.

Tân Thành held the central door beautifully.

Hạo Nhiên did not strike the paper flowers. His bamboo pointer touched Tân Thành's guarding forearm. He settled beneath the pressure, listened to the direction of the brace and turned around it. The pointer displaced a side flower while Tân Thành still held the center.

Lục Hoa did not defeat the door. It made the door irrelevant.

Thuận shouted for Tân Phong to cover.

Tân Phong continued toward the exit assigned to him.

The flower fell.

"Dead," Hạo Nhiên said.

Thuận's anger arrived before thought. "He left."

"I followed my condition," Tân Phong answered.

"The field needed you."

"The field always needs me when I choose myself."

Reset.

On the second attempt, Tân Thành abandoned the central door to protect a flower without waiting for Thuận. Hạo Nhiên entered through the open center and took two others.

"Dead."

Tân Thành struck the floor. "I chose wrong."

"You chose," Hạo Nhiên said. "Now learn the cost without pretending obedience would have made it clean."

Third attempt.

Thuận stopped issuing complete routes.

"Tân Phong, tell us whether you are staying."

Tân Phong stood between the offered exit and the field. "For this drill."

Not forever.

Enough.

"Thành, which door?"

Tân Thành looked at the central mark, then the flowers. "The one people are behind. Center can open."

They moved.

The field lost one flower and preserved five. Hạo Nhiên ended the drill.

Thuận looked at the fallen paper.

"We still failed someone."

"Leadership is not a promise that nobody pays," Hạo Nhiên said. "It is refusing to hide who paid and why."

He lit the crooked lantern. Its repaired frame cast uneven shadows.

"You assumed Lục Hoa assessment would keep the three of you together. That was not loyalty. It was fear using a shared future as rope."

Thuận felt both brothers waiting.

"I do not want either of you to accept the offers," he said.

Tân Phong nodded. "Now say the part that belongs to you."

"I am afraid Tân Phong will disappear and Tân Thành will let an institution spend his body."

Tân Thành asked, "And you?"

Thuận looked at the lantern. "I will keep choosing emergencies until everyone I protect leaves somewhere I cannot follow."

No one contradicted him.

That silence was not punishment. It was respect for an accurate fear.

They rejected neither offer that night. They agreed to investigate until the seventy-two hours expired.

Separate decisions. Shared evidence.

The lantern stayed crooked after they left.

Thuận walked home alone and called Khánh Vy before she could interpret another silence.

"My friends were offered programs connected to the school incidents," he said.

"Good programs?"

"Designed to make them choose separately."

"People do choose separately after graduation."

"I know. I reacted badly."

The admission cost him more than describing danger would have.

"Did you apologize?" she asked.

"Badly. Then through a drill."

"That sentence makes no sense."

"I know."

She laughed, then became serious. "You cannot preserve every friendship by refusing to let it change."

Thuận looked back toward the old floor. "Hạo Nhiên said something similar."

"I am charging you for repeated tutoring."

The call ended warmly. Thuận still told her nothing about the Union. Emotional honesty and factual secrecy continued occupying the same relationship without resolving each other.

Thuận placed the phone beside his unsent Lục Hoa petition. Two honest conversations, two withheld systems, one boy still deciding which silences protected anything beyond his fear.

No answer became final that night. He left both objects visible until morning and resisted arranging them into the conclusion he preferred.

Morning found both unchanged.

The petition waited.

The following day, Hạo Nhiên placed three blank Lục Hoa petition sheets beneath it.

Formal assessment required each candidate to state why he sought entry.

Tân Thành wrote:

`To reach people before violence becomes the only door.`

Tân Phong left his sheet blank.

Thuận wrote:

`To protect choice through balance.`

Then he crossed out protect and wrote preserve. Protect still placed him above the person choosing.

Hạo Nhiên read all three.

"Lục Hoa does not require one future from a group," he said. "It may accept one, three or none."

Tân Thành looked at his brother's blank page. "None?"

Tân Phong met his eyes. "I do not know whether joining a martial school is my choice or the last route we never questioned."

"We trained for this."

"We trained to survive Lao. Then because a friend asked for help. Then because stopping felt like betrayal. None of that answers what I want."

Tân Thành's anger rose from fear of being left. He recognized it and still could not remove it.

"So you vanish."

"I leave. Vanishing is what other people call it when they believe I owe them a route."

The brothers faced each other across the crooked light.

Thuận wanted to mediate. Hạo Nhiên stopped him with one finger.

This relationship did not need his sentence.

Tân Thành finally said, "Tell me before you go."

"Yes."

"Real place. Not a message after."

Tân Phong hesitated. "Yes."

The compromise belonged to them.

Thuận folded his own petition but did not submit it. Entering Lục Hoa while his friends decided separately would be his choice; delaying to preserve the appearance of unity would be control again.

He placed the folded page beneath his cup.

Not withdrawn.

Not submitted.

An honest unfinished state.
