The selection notice arrived during homeroom.
Cô chủ nhiệm read from a printed list while pretending the list had not already decided who would be uncomfortable.
"Trần Nhật Lâm. Student recovery representative."
The class turned with small movements.
Not enough to be rude.
Enough to be recorded by the body.
Lâm raised his hand.
"Do I have a choice?"
Cô chủ nhiệm looked at the paper.
"It is a school activity."
That answered nothing and everything.
"Will Bảo Khang attend?"
The room changed.
Cô chủ nhiệm's eyes moved to the vice-principal's empty doorway as if help might arrive from architecture.
"Khang is currently under separate review."
"That is not no."
"Lâm."
The warning in her voice was not cruel. That made it harder. Cruelty could be fought. Tired adults using soft brakes were worse because part of him wanted to help them.
He lowered his hand.
"I need the attendance list in writing."
"You will receive it."
"Before the event."
"Yes."
He wrote that down.
At lunch, Mai An slid into the seat across from him without asking.
"You're going."
"Apparently."
"Then I am going too."
"No."
"I am media team."
"No."
"Your objection has been filed and ignored."
She pushed a folded copy of the event map toward him. Lâm did not open it immediately. He waited until she took her hand away.
"Where did this come from?"
"A printer that thinks lanyards equal permission."
The map showed the youth hall entrance, registration table, side corridor, multipurpose room, rear service stairs, parking basement, and a small outdoor court where the movement demonstration would happen if rain stopped.
Three places were circled.
Registration.
Side corridor.
Basement.
"Too obvious?" he asked.
"Too useful."
That was Mai An's way of saying obvious things still killed people.
"The event has an open volunteer overflow table," she added. "For media support and logistics."
"Why tell me?"
"Because if your friends appear out of nowhere, the story is already dead. If they appear with stickers, the story has to fight paperwork first."
Lâm looked at the map again.
"You planned that?"
"No. I noticed a hole."
That was close enough to planning to make him uncomfortable.
After school, an unknown number sent Lâm one image.
No caption.
The photo showed three Trưng Vương students near a row of motorbikes. Two faces were turned away. The third was Vũ Khoa, though Lâm did not know the name yet. A red lanyard hung from his wrist.
Same lanyard.
Same two fingers.
The borrowed hall returned in pieces: movement mat, support training, the initials from the schedule.
V.K.
Under the image, a second message appeared.
Do not let the clean one walk behind you.
Lâm stared at the words.
Then another message came.
This is not apology. This is debt.
Quân.
Lâm knew it before the name appeared because guilt had a posture even in text.
He forwarded the image to Thuận.
No question.
Questions made fear loud.
Thuận replied six minutes later.
Received. Do not answer him again yet.
At the old Vovinam floor, Tân Thành looked at Quân's photo and cracked his knuckles.
"I hate that guy."
"You hate many people correctly and act on it incorrectly," Tân Phong said.
Tân Thành pointed at the screen. "He helped hurt Lâm."
"Which is why he knows the people who know how to hurt Lâm."
Thuận placed the phone on the floor between them.
Hạo Nhiên stood by the window, not entering the circle.
"You are collecting broken tools," he said.
Thuận did not look up.
"Broken tools remember who held them."
"And if the holder is waiting for you to grab the same handle?"
Thuận looked at the event map.
Registration. Side corridor. Basement.
"Then we do not grab," he said. "We place."
Tân Thành exhaled through his nose.
"Say it like a person."
Thuận moved one coin to each circled point.
"Tân Phong watches registration and phones. You watch basement, but you do not hit first. I watch the side corridor. Quân identifies the Trưng Vương boys from outside the room. Mai An stays inside media and does not become bait."
Tân Thành waited.
"And Lâm?"
Thuận's face did not change.
"Lâm survives the room he is already being forced to enter."
Tân Thành's mouth tightened. "That is not enough."
"It is the only part that belongs to him."
"So we stand around looking wise?"
Thuận moved the coin marked basement half an inch away from the drawn stairs.
"No. We make sure every door that tries to become a throat has teeth on our side too."
Hạo Nhiên's gaze sharpened.
"Do not use Lục Hoa's name at that event."
Tân Thành looked offended on Thuận's behalf. Thuận only nodded.
"I know."
"Do you?"
Thuận finally looked up.
"If I go as Lục Hoa, I drag the phái into a school trap. If I go as myself, I carry only the consequence I choose."
Hạo Nhiên let the silence test the answer.
Then he said, "Better."
Hạo Nhiên turned from the window.
"That answer has less pride than usual."
"I am learning."
"No," Hạo Nhiên said. "You are hurting slower."
Nobody knew what to do with that.
So they let it become the plan.
The event invitation reached Lâm through the cleanest possible route.
Cô chủ nhiệm announced it before lunch, reading from a printed list of selected students who would represent Lương Thế Vinh at a youth safety exchange. The words sounded harmless in exactly the way forms sounded harmless before someone signed them.
Conflict resolution.
Student wellness.
Inter-school cooperation.
Lâm heard cooperation and looked for the hand behind it.
His name was third.
Mai An's was not on the student list, but media support appeared in smaller print at the bottom. That made the event feel less like a trap for one body and more like a room built around several useful people.
After class, Quân waited near the bicycle parking area with his helmet strap unfastened. He looked like someone about to leave and someone unable to leave.
"The V.K. boy," he said.
Lâm stopped.
Quân did not meet his eyes. "Trưng Vương. Event volunteers. Red lanyard. He is not the loud one."
"Why tell me?"
Quân's fingers tightened around the helmet.
"Because the loud ones are easier to blame."
That was not courage.
It was a debt choosing a direction.
At the old Vovinam floor, Thuận listened to the report and moved only three coins.
Gate.
Media table.
Exit.
Tân Thành frowned. "That's it?"
"No," Thuận said. "That is what we are allowed to touch without making Lâm look owned."
