Chapter 152 - Failure Report

Bảo Khang did not come to school the next day.

The class noticed too quickly.

That meant they had been noticing him more than they admitted.

His empty seat two rows behind Lâm looked ordinary at first. Then the ordinary shape became wrong. No quiet page turns. No helpful movement near the teacher's desk. No polite voice carrying messages from Cô Ngân.

Absence could be pressure too.

Students whispered.

Suspended?

Sick?

Transfer again?

Did he fight Lâm?

Did Lâm finally snap?

Rumor tried to return to its favorite shape.

This time, it did not fit as easily.

That was the strange part.

Lâm had expected the whispers to cut the same way. They still cut, but some of them bent before reaching him. One student said, "I heard they both got restricted," and another answered, "Then why is only Khang absent?" A third said nothing, which was better than adding a clever lie.

The truth had not won.

But the easy lie had to work harder.

Cô chủ nhiệm began class with a reminder about speculation.

Her voice shook once on the word respectful.

Lâm wrote it down.

Not because the word mattered.

Because her voice did.

During recess, Mai An stood beside the window and looked at the courtyard.

"He is not gone," she said.

"I know."

"People like that do not disappear because a teacher walked in."

"I know."

"Good."

She handed him a printed screenshot.

"This came through a volunteer channel."

No greeting.

No explanation.

Archive girl had returned to being efficient because fear wasted time.

The screenshot showed a message with names cropped out:

School route compromised. Subject remains inside. Public removal no longer recommended without external pressure.

Under it:

Transfer observation toward central event channel.

Lâm read the second line three times.

"Central event channel?"

Mai An looked toward the banner still hanging near the stairs.

SAFE STUDENTS, SAFE CITY.

"The wellness exchange was not only an event," she said.

"It was a hallway."

"Yes."

He folded the paper.

"Trưng Vương?"

"Maybe."

"You hate that word."

"Still true."

At lunch, Cô Ngân called him to the office.

His mother could not come. Work did not bend every time danger asked it to.

Lâm went anyway.

The office felt different without Bảo Khang. Less clean. Less controlled. More like adults had to do their own work.

Cô Ngân placed a new movement restriction form on the desk.

"For two weeks, you will avoid unsupervised service corridors, side stairs, storage areas, and after-hours school activity."

"Both students?"

She paused.

"Khang is currently not attending."

"That is not what I asked."

Her pen tapped once.

"Yes. Both students."

He took the paper.

"I want that written."

"It is written."

"His name."

Cô Ngân looked tired then.

Not guilty.

Tired.

For the first time, Lâm wondered if she had believed she was controlling damage until damage started using her desk without asking.

She wrote:

Applies to T.N.L. and B.K. pending review.

Lâm watched the letters appear.

Small word.

Both.

Again.

"Thank you," he said.

She looked at him sharply, as if thanks was more suspicious than anger.

Maybe it was.

At the clinic, the rehab specialist read the screenshot once and handed it back.

"Keep the copy somewhere boring," she said.

"Boring?"

"Somewhere nobody dramatic would look first."

He folded it into the old exercise schedule in his bag.

"Central event channel," he said.

"School language."

"You know what it means?"

"I know what it does to bodies. It makes a room larger and tells you to pretend your fear is still the same size."

"Trưng Vương?"

"Maybe."

He stared at her.

She almost smiled.

"Annoying word, yes."

"If they come from another school, what do I do?"

"You stop thinking your hand is the first answer."

"That cannot be the answer forever."

"It is the answer until the doctor clears the wrist and your brain stops volunteering it for martyrdom."

He looked at the folded schedule.

"You keep talking like this is only rehab."

"It is rehab," she said. "Your problem is that people keep turning ordinary rooms into tests."

Then she took the tape from the cabinet and placed it in his bag.

"Bring this tomorrow."

"Why?"

"Because if the room grows, your map has to grow first. That is not a secret art. That is how people with injured hands avoid being stupid twice."

Thuận copied Lâm's typed memory of the screenshot into his notebook before he let anyone else see it.

Not the screenshot.

Only words.

School route compromised.

Subject remains inside.

Public removal no longer recommended without external pressure.

Transfer observation toward central event channel.

He called Lâm from the stairwell instead of sending the words into the group first.

"Do you know what it means?" Lâm asked.

"No."

The answer surprised both of them.

Thuận continued before pride could repair it. "I know what shape it has. That is different."

"Then what do I do?"

"Do not fill in names to make fear easier. Bảo Khang failed. That means the next hand may use a larger school route. If Trưng Vương appears again, do not treat it like a random invitation."

Lâm breathed once.

"You keep warning me like you are not allowed to help."

Thuận looked through the stairwell bars at the training floor below, where Hạo Nhiên had drawn a chalk circle and left it empty.

"Because I am not allowed to help the way I want."

After the call, Tân Phong drew a line from Lương Thế Vinh to the culture center, then another toward Trưng Vương.

"Not proof," he said.

"No," Thuận agreed.

Tân Thành cracked his knuckles.

"But enough?"

Hạo Nhiên looked at him.

Tân Thành exhaled. "I know. Wrong question."

Thuận studied the route.

For the first time, the map did not look like Lâm trapped in a school.

It looked like the schools themselves were being arranged.

"Union?" he asked.

Hạo Nhiên took longer to answer than usual.

"If Huyền Tinh wanted him gone quietly and failed, someone who cares about public order may decide quiet is the wrong tool."

"Liên Minh."

"Maybe."

Thuận hated maybe almost as much as Mai An did.

"What does Lục Hoa do if the Union moves through students?"

Hạo Nhiên looked toward the rain-dark balcony.

"First, it proves the movement belongs to the Union."

"And if it does?"

"Then balance stops being a private virtue."

That night, Bảo Khang stood under a different awning in a different school shirt.

Not his.

Borrowed.

The shirt had no name tag.

Rain struck the edge of the roof and broke into silver lines under the streetlight.

He opened the message thread with no saved name.

This time he did not erase the first message.

School route compromised.

Subject remains inside.

Mother interference effective.

Archive interference partial.

Non-system instruction confirmed.

Outside student intervention confirmed.

External fighter link usable.

Recommend external pressure.

He sent it.

For a long moment, there was no reply.

Then three words appeared:

Prepare central contact.

Bảo Khang closed the phone.

His wrist still carried a faint line from the schoolbag strap.

Lâm had not beaten him.

That was not why his hand curled.

Lâm had made him report failure.

In some rooms, that was worse.
